Speed Bumps (and more) for Everyone!

AMD again refreshes its lineup with a speed bump, but it also throws a couple new wrinkles. The Phenom II X6 1075T is not a speed bump, nor is it unlocked, but it helps to flesh out the X6 family of parts at $245 US. AMD also introduces a new barnburner with the Phenom II X4 970. The Phenom II X2 560, Athlon II X4 645, Athlon II X3 450, and Athlon II X2 265 round out the collection of parts. Each is unique in their own special way, and we test every one.

At IDF this week, Intel is revealing much more information about the new Sandy Bridge processor architecture and one of many interesting features is a new version of Turbo Boost and how it functions with the platform. After spending some time with a handful of engineers and asking about the next-generation Turbo Boost technology, I think we have a good grasp of what it is, how it works and how it affects many different aspects of the new Intel platform.

AMD's latest 800 series of motherboards have seemingly taken over the marketplace, and with native SATA 6G and the ubiquitous NEC USB 3.0 controller, as well as cost effective 6-core processors, there is a new push for high end AMD motherboards. MSI is attempting to dominate the high end with an affordable and powerful solution with the 890FXA-G70.

Home theater setups still pretty popular in some circles, especially with the availability of Blu-ray components and smaller form factor motherboards supporting full-size processors. NMediaPC has been in the HTPC game for some time now, and their new 1080P aims at giving users a micro ATX solution that won't be detectable as a PC on most entertainment centers. It's sleek, low-profile design (and $59 price tag) should draw a crowd at many online etailers.

Shifting into gear

System reviews are interesting in that anyone can put some PC components in a case and call it a gaming rig. The real issue is not just the hardware specs but how the company presents itself and how it supports customers before, during and after the purchase process. Having a 6-core processor overclocked to 4.5 GHz and a pair of GTX 480s never hurts though.
