Enclosure Design and Layout

The Oyen Digital MiniPro™ enclosure features a flat black powder-coated finish, giving it a sleek appearance and some degree of scratch resistance. The enclosure itself is made of aluminum, helping to cool the hard drive seated within the enclosure.

The bottom of the MiniPro™ features a series of cooling fins to aid in the cooling of the hard drive in the enclosure. The four screw holes hold the outer and inner trays of the enclosure together.

The rear panel of the MiniPro™ enclosure houses an eSATA port, a USB 3.0 port, a power port, and an ON/OFF switch. The power port is used in conjunction with the included USB-based power adapter or the AC power adapter to power the device when connected via the eSATA port. The device is self-powered when connected to a USB-style port.

Enclosure Disassembly

The MiniPro™ enclosure comes apart in two pieces – a one-piece outer shell and an inner tray. The inner tray houses the electronic guts of the enclosure as well as a mounting area for the hard drive.

The hard drive sits directly on the enclosure's PCB when seated in the tray. To protect the delicate PCB elements, Oyen Digital designed the PCB with a plastic overlay on which the hard drive sits.

The inside-front of the enclosure contains female SATA data and power connectors for connecting the hard drive to the enclosure's PCB. To the right of the SATA connectors is a dual-purpose LED. The LED glows at a lower intensity blue when the device is connected to an active power port and pulses at a high intensity blue when there is drive activity.

The back of the tray houses the eSATA, USB 3.0, and power adapter ports. Additionally, a power switch is provided.

The underside of the tray shows the tray mount points to the device shell as well as the chipsets that control the enclosure's integrated ports. The eSATA port is controlled by the ASMedia 1456pe chipset located on the outside left of the PCB controller board. The chipset in the middle of the controller board, the ASMedia 1053e, controls the USB 3.0 port. This chipset also allows the USB 3.0 port to operate in UASP mode when attached to a host USB 3.0 device port with similar in-built support.

Included Accessories

Oyen Digital provides all necessary accessories and cables to use the device in any configuration.

The included user manual is short and to the point, giving you enough information to get the enclosure configured and connected to the host system.

Oyen Digital includes two types of USB cables. The cable with the blue USB adapter is for connecting to a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 device port. The dual port USB cable with power adapter can be used to power the device using two of the host's USB ports with an eSATA cable connected to the enclosure.

The include eSATA cable requires an active power adapter when connected to the host system. Either the AC power adapter or the dual port USB power adapter can be used to power the device.

Oyen Digital includes the black colored screws for putting together the tray and outer shell of the enclosure with the chrome screws used to mount the hard drive to the inner tray. The rubber mounts can be used on the mounted hard drive to prevent device vibration.

I would buy this in a heartbeat if it came with a gigabit ethernet port, and the software to allow me to connect it to my USB 2.0 laptop's gigabit ethernet port, amd back up my hard drive! One gigabit ethernet is around 2.1 times the bandwidth of usb 2.0 (480 megabits per sec). M$ requires the pro version of windows 7, just to be able to back up to a network location! It is a royal pain in the A$$ ad-hocking over a cat5 cable my usb 2.0 laptops with the one laptop I own that has USB 3.0, via its gigabit ethernet port, but this makes my backups faster! There are millions of older laptops out there with gigabit ethernet cards, but only have usb 2.0 ports, and a drive that could do backups over the eathernet, without having to pay the M$ OS pro-version TAX, would sale like hot cakes, and be a little faster than usb 2.0!

I love my D-Lock eSATAp (eSATA+power)enclosure. My work laptop (Dell Precision M4500)doesn't have USB 3, but it does have eSATAp. However, most of our computers at home just have USB 3, so this enclosure would be great for me.

On the Oyen Digital website is an alternative eSATA cable that is a single eSATAp connector at one end and two connectors at the other: eSATA and DC power. I really wish this cable was included with the enclosure. It's $15 on Amazon (but not available in Canada!). BTW the enclosure is $40 on, but $69 on Crazy difference.
