Introduction and Spec Sheet

This is a fairly basic laptop, but it also appears well equipped for multimedia duty. The review unit specifications are representative of the most basic Z560, which costs $699. There is a lot of competition in this segment from other solid laptops like the Sony EB series, the Samsung R580, the Toshiba E205 and others. Let’s see how the Z560 stacks up.

A few months ago I wrote an article for PC Perspective about the rise of home theater laptops.  My argument was that laptops have become so powerful that the need for a dedicated home theater PC is greatly diminished. The average family laptop is just as capable of displaying high definition video as a purpose-built HTPC.

It appears that I’m not alone in my thoughts. The Lenovo Z560, a new multimedia laptop, is remarkable because it is unremarkable. The press guide received with my review unit was headed by the motto “Entertainment into Overdrive.”  The Lenovo website states that the Z560 is “an affordable 15″ multimedia laptop.”

Yet, judging from the specifications, there is very little inside the Z560 that makes this laptop different from other mainstream laptops. Take a look at the spec sheet below and see for yourself.
