Asus G51J Notebook Review - Mobile PC Gaming for the Mainstream

Subject: Mobile
Manufacturer: Asus

Specifications and Box Contents

Let's take a look at the specifications for the Asus G51J. Keep in mind that you can't directly configure an Asus notebook as you would, say, a Dell. Retailers will sell certain configurations to consumers, so the following should give you an idea of what you can find at your favourite outlet.

As you can see the Asus G51J comes with a pretty comprehensive list of components and options. The specs are rather conservative, but I suspect this is intentional to keep the price of a configured G51J low compared to the more premium gaming systems available. There are some notable options unavailable like an SSD or GeForce GTX 280M upgrade. Luckily HDD upgrades are easily done, but the GPU not so much.

Box Contents

The Asus G51J falls under the Republic of Gamers product line, which means it gets special attention that will make it appeal more to gamers. Inside the box you will find:

  • Asus Republic of Gamers branded Razer Copperhead gaming mouse
  • RoG backpack for the laptop
  • 1 OS image DVD
  • 1 Driver and Software DVD
  • 1 CyberLink Power2Go software
  • Micro-fiber cleaning cloth
  • Power Brick and cords

The Copperhead mouse is excellent in games, photo editing, and general usage, but I found the mouse a little too flat in my hand and it seems to be a little picky about the surface you use it on. However, it’s an excellent gamer freebie ($50 USD value).

The Asus G50VT, which is the predecessor to the G51J is superior in my opinion. It has a sexy red trim and that small OLED screen behind the keyboard. It can actually have more single core x86 performance than the G51J thanks to the X9100 Extreme processor, which you can overclock to 3.45, maybe 3.6GHZ 100% stable at full load.

The Forcecon fan is easily replaceable with a few screws, versus the G51J where I've heard you have to replace the whole heatsink to replace the fan.
