Radeon 8500 and System Setup

This content was originally featured on and has been converted to PC Perspective's website. Some color changes and flaws may appear.

Above you see the ATI Radeon 8500 sporting 128 MB of memory. ATI has included a TV-out and DVI output along with the standard analog output. The Infineon memory is not covered by a heatsink (making all three the same in that way) and the chipset is covered by a rather small heatsink and fan.

The size of the Radeon 8500 is identical to that of the NVIDIA Ti4200 card, but the Radeon has the advantage of having twice as much memory.

System Setup and Benchmarks

The key to having a fair and accurate test between any component, video cards included, is to have an identical test setup for each component. Each video card was included on the same hardware (see below) and each video card was introduced with a fresh format and reinstall of the Windows XP operating system.

Test System Setup

1 x 1.67 GHz AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Processor

Abit KR7A-133R

2 x 256MB Corsair Micro PC3000 DDR DRAM

Hard Drive

20.5GB 7200 RPM IBM EIDE

Video Card

NVIDIA Ti4200 Reference 64 MB

MSI G4Ti400-VTD 128 MB

ATI Radeon 8500 128 MB

Video Drivers

Detonator 27.40

ATI 67.40

Operating System

The benchmarks that were used focused solely on gaming and 3D development, as our quick testing showed there to be no noticeable differences between the three cards in any 2D environment.

Quake III: Arena

Wolfenstein MP Test

Jedi Knight II

Commanche 4

Code Creatures
