BFG Tech GeForce 8600 GTS OC

Our first sample that arrived was from BFG Technologies, one of the most respected in the add-in card business in the US.  Like nearly all NVIDIA-based graphics cards, the BFG 8600 GTS OC is basically a reference design with a different fan plate screwed on for branding purposes.  Every 8600 GTS that you see initially will be built the same way, though BFG does make a couple of performance changes...

You can see the 8600 GTS is a single slot graphics card and in my testing it runs pretty cool and quiet as well.  The PCB length is much shorter than the 8800 cards we have seen and should allow installation in even the tightest of SFF cases.

As the name implies, the BFG 8600 GTS OC is "overclocked" right out of the box over the reference speeds.  The core on the BFG model runs at 710 MHz versus 675 MHz reference speed and thus we can expect a modest performance gain.  The memory speeds are kept at 1 GHz in this case too.

The 8600 GTS features two dual-link DVI outputs that both support HDCP as well.  The other connection is either for S-Video output or can be used with an HDTV dongle to allow for component output.

The GeForce 8600 GTS supports SLI of course!  We'll have performance results for it sometime later in the week as we catch up in our testing. 

Thanks to the smaller chip and new design, the 8600 GTS uses much less power than the 8800-series of cards but does still require connection to the 12V line here.

BFG has included only the bare necessities in the 8600 GTS in an attempt to maintain a competitive price.  There are two DVI-to-VGA adaptors, one HDTV dongle, one power adaptor and a package of drivers and information.
