Introduction and Features

Silverstone is one of the few vendors who hasn’t left the SFF crowd hang out to dry. I’ve reviewed every SFF case they have developed over the past few years, and their latest addition to the popular Sugo series is the SG06. This case shares many features with its older brother the SG05, but includes some new wrinkles to the front bezel design as well as support for solid state drives and larger third-party heatsinks.

The Small Form Factor platform of motherboards and other hardware components has been pretty stagnant in 2009. Yes, there were a few exceptions (NVIDIA ION, Intel’s Atom processors, and netbooks in general), but mini ITX motherboards aren’t really getting as much attention in the marketplace one might expect after seeing some of the developments to smaller processor die sizes, energy efficiency updates, and advancements in the high definition arena.

HTPC builders have really been looking toward micro ATX solutions for their home entertainment needs because of the lack of availability of mini ITX hardware, including enclosures for their SFF systems. The Silverstone SG06 is an improved version of the SG05 and includes performance upgrades to the overall cooling and design of the case itself. Silverstone removed the front bezel vent that was on the SG05 and instead created a streamlined aluminum bezel that is stylish and sleek. They also added 10 millimeters to the height of the case for taller heatsinks, which is a huge plus for those users wanted to move up from a stock heatsink with lower cooling performance.

This case still supports 9″ graphics cards that can be single or two-slot solutions. The reset button was also surprisingly moved to the back panel, but everything else remained in its original place. Silverstone also added large vents to the left, right, and top panels of the case for extra cooling, which is pretty crucial to the longevity of any home entertainment computer.
