Components and Design

The Cooler Master Hyper 48 HSF comes securely packed in a unique, colorful box.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

In addition to the pre-assembled Hyper 48 heat sink fan, the package also contains:

  • Universal P4 and K8 retention bracket

  • Universal P4 and K8 backing plate

  • Spring mounting clips (2)

  • LGA775 retention plate

  • LGA775 backing plate

  • All necessary mounting screws

  • Syringe of thermal grease

  • Printed User Manual in 8 languages

The Hyper 48 heatsink is all copper and includes four copper heat pipes.  There are 23 copper fins, which extend vertically from the base along with 8 more fins on top that together creates a total surface area of 2,200 sq cm.

All of the components are soldered together to facilitate good heat transfer.

The circular base comes with a polished finish and is protected with a piece of clear plastic film, which obviously must be removed before installation.

A square, aluminum shroud is attached to the top of the copper fins and provides a mounting surface for the 92mm fan, which is fitted with an attractive and functional black wire guard.

The Hyper 48 includes an open frame, 92mm Delta fan.  I was very pleased to see this choice as several of the previous Cooler Master HSFs I have tested were plagued by noisy or faulty variable speed fans.

The Hyper 48's universal mounting system is designed to work with either Intel Prescott, P4 or AMD K8 processors and motherboards.  An insulated steel backing plate can be used with both platforms.  One side of the backing plate has four (4) tapped holes for socket 478 and the other side has two (2) tapped holes for socket 754/939/940.

Two spring steel mounting clips engage into the corner holes of the retention frame, securely clamping the Hyper 48 cooler in place on top of the CPU.

A separate set of mounting hardware is provided for the new LGA775 processors.
