Downtiration is not a word, but then again what you are about to hear isn't exactly a song either, though is closer to one than many of the insipid honey drenched hits you are likely to hear today.  A company by the name of Search Laboratory fed Google's Tenserflow software with 999 love songs and let it assemble the new benchmark for sentimental songbirds.  It is also a great example as to the current limitations of AI and Deep Learning, regardless of what the PR flacks would have you believe.

It's an Epic post-apocalyptic GPU Exodus

The Guru of 3D took over two dozen cards on the Metro, with a focus on the DX12 render path with DX-R support which does make the NVIDIA results a bit more interesting for now.  If you are looking to play at 1080p with every bell and whistle on, you can scrape by on a GTX 1080 or Vega 56 but you should really consider bumping that to an RTX 2070 or Vega 64.  For 1440p gamers the new Radeon VII is capable of providing a good experience but you are far better off with an RTX 2080 or better. 

At 4k, well, even the RTX 2080 Ti can barely make 50fps, with the rest of the pack reaching 40fps at best.  As to the effects of DLSS and ray tracing on the visual quality and overall performance? Read on to see for yourself.

Recalculating ... time to arrival infinite minutes

You might have missed something in 1999, while everyone focused on the other Y2K bug, which was older GPS devices going haywire.  This was because the date is stored as a 10 bit character which means that 1024 weeks after the start of the epoch, the dates on your GPS device rolls back to 0 and it is no longer able to give positional data as it depends on knowing when, as well as where you are.

On April 6th, this will happen once again and far more people are bound to notice than when this previously occurred.  There are ways to ensure that devices do not suffer this bothersome 10 bit problem but with the lack of news coverage and general awareness not many have bothered.  Devices which adhere to the ICD-200/IS-GPS-200 specification will have no problems whatsoever; but many devices did not originally and when was the last time you saw a firmware update for the GPS in your car?

As The Register puts it, "if your gadget goes haywire in April, it's probably because of this. If it works as normal: brilliant, it's not affected."

NVIDIA GeForce 418.91 WHQL Driver Enables DLSS in Battlefield V and Metro Exodus

NVIDIA's GeForce 418.91 WHQL drivers have brought DLSS support to Battlefield V and both real-time ray tracing and DLSS to the upcoming Metro Exodus, which will be the first game to support the technologies from day one when it is released (now exclusively on Epic's game store) on February 15.

Battlefield V - This stunning World War II combat game, created by EA and DICE, was the first to support real-time ray-traced reflections and has now added support for DLSS — giving a performance boost of up to 40 percent with ray-tracing reflections enabled.

Metro Exodus - The third installment in the haunting Metro franchise, developed by 4A Games and Deep Silver, will support RTX-enabled real-time ray tracing — the first time it has been used in a game for global illumination. At launch, the game will also support DLSS, boosting performance up to 30 percent, as well as a host of other NVIDIA gaming technologies, including HairWorks, PhysX, Ansel and Highlights.

NVIDIA has posted a video showcasing the performance improvement with DLSS vs. real-time ray tracing in BFV, where gains of up to 40% are advertised:

As to Metro Exodus, with the additional ray traced components it would seem the upcoming game will end up being a popular benchmark for the technologies, after we have seem most of the ray tracing and DLSS discussion surround BFV to this point (Port Royal notwithstanding). At some future date Shadow of the Tomb Raider will enter the mix as well, but this is still awaiting ray tracing and DLSS support via a planned update.

For its part Metro is only gaining 30% with DLSS (vs. real-time ray tracing + TAA) according to NVIDIA, which is obviously lower than the boost to BFV. We have seen a preview of real-time ray tracing and DLSS performance in the latest Metro game over at Tom's Hardware, where they look at the performance differences and perceived quality between the two. It's also worth noting that both BFV and Metro Exodus are not fully ray traced games, as Tom's explains:

"Battlefield applies ray tracing to reflections. Metro Exodus uses it for global illumination from the sun/sky, modeling how light interacts with various surfaces. Local light sources are not ray traced, though."

The Battlefield V DLSS update is now rolling out, with some early performance numbers already available. Metro Exodus will be released on February 15, and is the latest title to eschew Steam in favor of Epic's new platform.

Mozilla & Ubisoft "Clever-Commit" Deep-Learning Code Review

The basic premise of “deep learning” is that you process big pools of data to try and find “good” and/or “bad” patterns. After you build up a set of trained data, you can compare new data against it to accomplish some goal.

In this case, Mozilla is using it to scan commits to the Firefox codebase as a form of automated code review. The system was originally developed by Ubisoft as Commit Assistant, which they have been using as a form of code analysis. Mozilla has since partnered with them, and will contribute to its ability to scan C++, JavaScript, and Mozilla’s own Rust language.

Other vendors, such as Microsoft and their IntelliCode system, have been using deep learning to assist in software development. It’s an interesting premise that, along with unit tests, static code analysis, and so forth, should increase the quality of code.

Personally, I’m one of those people that regularly use static code analysis (if the platform has a good and affordable solution available). It’s good to follow strong design patterns, but it’s hard to recover from the “broken window theory” once you get a few hundred static code analysis warnings… or a few hundred compiler warnings. Apathy just sets in and I just end up ignoring everything from that feedback level, down. It pushes me to, if I can control a project from scratch, keep it clean of warnings and code analysis issues.

All that is to say – it’ll be interesting to see how Clever-Commit is adopted. Since it’s apparently on a per-commit basis, it shouldn’t be bogged down by past mistakes. I wonder if we can somehow add that theory to other forms of code analysis. I’m curious what sort of data we could gather by scanning from commit to commit… what that would bring in terms of a wholistic view of code quality for various projects.

And then… what will happen when deep learning starts generating code? Hmm.

Unreal Engine 4.22 Preview 1 Published: Initial DXR Support

The upcoming version of Unreal Engine, 4.22, will include several new features.

The most interesting addition for our audience is probably “Early Access” support for DirectX 12 Raytracing (DXR) on DirectX 12. This includes the low-level framework to cast and evaluate rays in shaders (although they don’t clarify whether that means written shaders, nodes for graph-based shaders, or both) as well as higher-level features that use DXR, such as area lights, soft shadows, and reflections. They have also added a denoiser for shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion, which will improve image quality with lower sample counts.

If you remember NVIDIA’s RTX announcement, many of their first-party demos were built using Unreal Engine 4. This includes the Star Wars demo with the two Stormtroopers putting their feet in their mouths on an elevator with their boss. It makes sense that Epic would be relatively far along in RTX support, especially just before GDC.

A few other additions include Visual Studio 2019 support (although Visual Studio 2017 is still the default). The new Unreal Audio Engine is now enabled by default for new projects, which was a complete re-write of the original system that started a few years ago. The old audio system was a bit of a mess, and, worse, varied from platform to platform.

Unreal Engine 4.22 also (experimentally) opts-in to the much longer file and paths names that were introduced with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. The previous limit was 260 characters for a full path, which was defined as MAX_PATH in Win32. I’m not sure what the new limit is, but I think it’s 32,767 characters after expansion. I could be wrong, though.

If you have the Epic Launcher installed, whether it’s for Unreal Engine, Fortnite, something from the Epic Store, Unreal Tournament 4, or whatever, then you can check out Unreal Engine 4.22 for free. (Royalties apply under certain circumstances… but, at that point, you are making money off of it.)

February 12th Update for Battlefield V Adds DLSS

The Battlefield V Tides of War Chapter 2: Lightning Strikes Update #3 patch, beyond sounding like a Final Fantasy title, has quite a few major improvements. The headlining feature is improved RTX support, which we will discuss shortly, but fans of the game may appreciate the other bullet points, too.

But first, because we are a computer hardware site, the RTX stuff. DLSS, which was recently added to 3DMark and greatly improved the image quality, has been added to Battlefield V. This setting uses machine learning to produce a best guess at antialiasing, versus calculating it with a direct algorithm (such as with TXAA or FXAA). Now that MSAA is somewhat uncommon, because it is incompatible with certain rendering processes, we’re stuck with either antialiasing via post-process or super-sampling. Super-sampling is expensive, so it’s usually either FXAA, which tries to find edges and softens them, or TXAA, which gives neighboring frames different sub-pixel positions and blends them. Both cases have issues. TXAA is considered the “higher end” option, although it gets ugly when objects move, especially quickly and visibly smooth. Because DLSS is basically a shortcut to provide something that looks like super-sampling, it should avoid many of these issues.

DXR raytracing performance was also improved.

Okay, now the tech enthusiasts can stop reading – it’s time for the fans.

Vaultable object detection is said to have a major improvement with this release. DICE acknowledges that Battlefield V movement wasn’t as smooth as it should be. There were a lot of waist-high barriers that players can get stuck behind, which the vaulting system should propel them over. It should be much easier to move around the map after this update, which is good for people like me who like to sneak around and flank.

DICE has also discussed several netcode changes, such as adding more damage updates per packet and fixing some issues where damage should be ignored, or healing should occur but would be ignored, and so forth. Basically, all of the netcode improvements were related to health or damage in some way, which is a good area to focus on.

Also, the Rush game mode, introduced in the Battlefield Bad Company sub-franchise, will return on March 7th "for a limited time"... whatever they mean by that.

Gigabyte's Aero 15-X9, RTX on the go

Gigabyte's Aero 15-X9 gaming laptop will set you back $2800, if you want the full 4K display and there is a more expensive model with an i9-8950HK if you feel the i7-8750H is underpowered.  Kitguru reviewed the i7 model, with an RTX 2070 Max-Q, a 1TB Intel 760p M.2 NVMe SSD and 16GB of DDR4-2666MHz and the slightly less expensive 1080p 15.6" display with a top refresh of 144Hz. 

Unfortunately this review was completed before the newest GeForce driver dropped, so Kitguru couldn't test DLSS, however the comparative performance scores are still valid.  Take a peek right here.

A real PNG in the arse for Android users

Careful what pictures you open up on your Android device as you may find yourself regretting looking at that meme.  Among the 42 new vulnerabilities listed in Android's newest Security Bulletin is a rather nasty one which could use a special PNG image to execute arbitrary code on your phone.  Currently unpatched, it affects even the newest Android Pie version and once a fix is determined, who knows how long it will take to propagate to your provider and your specific model of phone.  In the mean time surf carefully and take a peek at Slashdot for links to the other vulnerabilities, including 10 other critical ones.

AMD Radeon VII UEFI Update and Pro Driver Support

After reports first surfaced regarding the lack of UEFI support from the new Radeon VII graphics card (with an ASRock BIOS update the first to address the issue), AMD has announced the release of a new BIOS update for AIB partners to add this UEFI GOP support to the card.

The statement from AMD, via TechPowerUp:

"AMD has released a BIOS for the Radeon VII with UEFI GOP included for our AIB partners. We will also make a one click installable BIOS available to end users via AMD.com. We do not expect gaming performance differences between the non UEFI BIOS and the UEFI GOP included BIOS, although the non UEFI BIOS may experience slower boot times from cold boot."

AMD specifically mentions that performance will not be impacted with the new BIOS, though boot times should improve slightly with the card no longer causing CSM to be enabled, which also broke the secure boot process. The one-click updater for owners of any Radeon VII will be available directly from AMD, and I will update our review sample when that becomes available.

In other Radeon VII news, the launch of the latest Radeon Pro driver (Radeon Pro Software for Enterprise 19.Q1 WHQL) includes some limited support for consumer Radeon cards - including Radeon VII, though not available at launch as reported by AnandTech this morning:

"Under the program, certain Radeon consumer cards, including R5 300, R7, and RX series products will be able to install the Radeon Pro drivers. These products, in turn will be able to access certain professional features of the Radeon Pro drivers, but lack the all-critical certifications and optimizations that typically set the Pro drivers apart."

The lack of workstation optimizations make this less attractive for owners of Radeon VII, though it makes sense as otherwise there would be even less differentiation between the latest Radeon flagship and its workstation counterpart (Radeon Instinct MI50).

Google Chrome 73 Getting Media Keys Support

While the desktop version of Google Chrome has just been updated to 72, the next version, 73, will allow websites to bind JavaScript events to media keys. This means that websites will be able to listen to those buttons and respond accordingly, even if Google Chrome is a background application. Some websites should support this immediately, because it was already available on mobile, although I am not sure which ones and how.

The update should be useful to those of us who, for example, listen to YouTube playlists. I am curious what sort of controls Google will add to tune its behavior. For instance, I probably do not want to close every old YouTube tab that I have laying around just so I can use Spotify in peace.

The feature will be added to Chrome OS, macOS, and Windows. Linux users will need to wait a little bit for some reason.

$750 Pre-orders for LG 32UL750-W FreeSync HDR 600 Display

LG is preparing to release the 32UL750-W 31.5-inch FreeSync gaming monitor.

This one is certified for VESA DisplayHDR 600, which requires a minimum of 600 cd/m2 in both small patches for highlights (at least 10% of the screen) as well as full-screen for brief periods to convey the sharp brightness during scenes of explosions. The panel also must produce 350 cd/m2 across the whole panel for long periods of time. It is VESA’s second-highest DisplayHDR certification behind DisplayHDR 1000 (excluding the True Black variants, which add low-brightness performance to the criteria).

In terms of its other features: it is built around a VA panel that has a 4K (3840 x 2160) native resolution. The monitor can accept inputs over 2x HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C. Its color gamut is listed as 95% DCI-P3. It is only capable of a 60Hz refresh rate, which may or may not be something that people care about. Personally, I value higher refresh rates, although that’s mostly for typical 2D things, like moving my mouse and simple UI animations. Above 60 FPS is less noticeable for me in busy scenes, like most first-person shooters, although it does add a bit to the experience.

The LG 32UL750-W is currently on pre-order for an MSRP of $749.99. B&H Photo has it listed for $746.99. As far as I know, neither LG nor B&H Photo lists when these pre-orders will ship. Anandtech says that the monitor is already shipping in Japan, however.

Microsoft got quite a bit of mindshare with the announcement of DirectX Raytracing (DXR) at last year’s GDC 2018. NVIDIA’s RTX technology was somewhat synonymous with DirectX 12 for a while, although NVIDIA was not exactly hiding their equivalent extension for Vulkan. It’s not that you must use DirectX 12 – it’s that you cannot use DirectX 11.

And now there’s a tutorial on GitHub by the user Sergii Kudlai (iOrange), complete with source code licensed under MIT. iOrange is a programmer for Digital Extremes, which is best known for their 2013 hit, Warframe, although they also collaborated with Epic Games on the earlier Unreal Tournament editions (UT2004 and earlier). They also worked on Epic Pinball.

The article is very casually worded and covers up to a single triangle.

If you’re interested in a little more depth, NVIDIA is also releasing Ray Tracing Gems for free on their website, although you need to be registered with their developer portal.

Ray Tracing Gems is available here. Currently only the first two chapters are up, but the rest will arrive every few days until approximately February 25th.

GTX 1660 Ti-tillation for your Monday

Today we have seen a lot of action surrounding the soon to be released GTX 1660 Ti, which at one point many considered a fantasy created by strange minds and not an upcoming product at all.  Doubt has been removed with the leak of details and pictures of packaging, spotted by WCCFTech and others.

Thanks to the packaging we know the card will have 6 GB GDDR6 VRAM, DirectX 12 support, ANSEL support and Turing Shaders, though no mention of Ray Tracing appears.  The back of the card features DVI-D, HDMI, Display Port and the Virtual Link connector which was missing from some custom RTX series cards.  Check out the link for more models from third party vendors.

A little bit of power for a little bitty system

SFX PSUs are great for small form factor builds, at 4" long it will fit into those smaller systems and in the case of this SF450 from Corsair, the 17" long cables allow you to cleanly route them through the chassis.  This is an updated model, you can find the previously released SF450 still on the market and unfortunately for the 2018 model, it is about $30 cheaper.

It has been a while since we linked to a description of the various panel types offered for those shopping for a new monitor, which is why your eyeballs are directed to TechSpot's recent article.  A lot of discussion goes on about the disappointment some express when they see a new variable refresh rate display which is using a 'mere' TN panel; or how someone feels only VA panels offer a true black.

Dey turk er jurbs! Microsoft is now mocking itself?

Microsoft recently release Office 2019, along with a series of videos about why you shouldn't buy it, one of which you can see at Ars Technica if you don't want to watch them all.  It does make sense financially as you will pay for Office 359 forever, while Office 2019 is a one time purchase, but mocking your own product is a bold move.

That is not the only self inflicted mockery coming from Redmond today, as they now refer to IE 11 as "a compatibility solution" and not a web browser.  As their other browser, the one you use to install Chrome, will soon be Chromium based which the competition seems to approve of.  

Considering how hard Microsoft fought to ensure IE remained an integral part of Windows, this seems a major sea change for the company.
