It would seem Daily Tech has gotten the initial pricing sheet for AMD's upcoming Barcelona processor launch later this month. If the numbers are correct, the most expensive 2-series Opteron processor is going to top out at 2.0 GHz and $372 - a bargain considering how much top-end server processors usually sell for. The only draw back here is that the pricing could be reflective of the performance levels we'll see out of the CPU.

It is essentially the end of the road for AMD's Athlon series, and the 'on' suffix, as we anxiously await the arrival of Phenom. Legit Reviews pulls out some of their old ceramic buddies for one last benchmarking session to see how the line changed over the years, with the 1800+ being the baseline. It looks like the Black Edition spells the end of the line for this venerable series.

At the end of the DigiTimes post, they mention that Intel has no comment about the upcoming Penryn processors, a move very familiar to anyone who has seen them release a major update to their processor line. It is very likely that they are right about the chip lineup, but we won't know for sure until the end of this year or the beginning of the next.

AMD snuck out another new processor today, though getting your hands on one might take an act of divine intervention -- they didn't seed samples to any media that I am aware of so maybe the "black edition" refers to its stealth like qualities?
In any event, the CPU is a 200 MHz bumb over the previous fastest Athlon X2 processor, still at 90nm process technology, and that's about it. Pricing has it about $240 (just about the $250 I said they would be limited to in my podcast last week).

Digitimes is reporting that nine 45nm Penryn-based processors are going to be launched for desktop users. The amount of quad-core processors is going up with nearly half of the nine running with three of their buddies. The report also indicates a return of the 0.5x multiplier to allow for more CPU choices (and more overclocking with us!).
Within the nine CPUs, five will be dual-core processors (Wolfdale) and the remaining four will be quad-core (Yorkfield).

The E6300 was released last year as the low end of the C2D processor scale, and it looks like it's on it's way out. The newly introduced E2160 runs at 1800MHz with a 200MHz FSB and a 1MB L2 cache, putting it in the same territory as the E6300. You can see what kind of an effect the lower FSB and smaller cache have on performance at Madshrimps, as well as a look at it's overclocking ability.

According to the Inq, it looks like Intel may already be ending the Viiv branding -- not a bad move considering it's pace of adoption.
And so, if a story on Digitimes turns out to be correct,

Looks like the first wave of Fusion products will indeed be split between being built by AMD and TSMC.
Motherboard makers predict that AMD will retain
production of the CPU portion of its Fusion processor at its own fabs
or that of Chartered Semiconductor until at least 2009, with Taiwan
Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce the graphics
processor unit (GPU) portion of the processor.

The idea is to stop using those sluggish electrons, and switch to those speed demon photons. This won't be an easy switch, but it may be needed to keep the increase in speed that we have become accustomed to. If it can be done, a prototype silicon laser modulator that can achieve 40Gbs is very impressive, and necessary to have a photonic IC. Slashdot has the news flash.
