A curious thread over at HardOCP seems to indicate that at least one lucky fellow was able to buy an AMD Phenom II processor a bit earlier than he was supposed to. Luckily for you, he has posted some specifications, benchmarks and just general impressions of the product over there as well, so check it out.

Intel's upcoming Lynnfield core is based on the Nehalem architecture but adds in an integrated PCI Express 2.0 hub thereby officially nixing the north bridge from the world of PCs going forward. The PCIe configuration can be setup as a single x16 connection or a pair of x8 ports for SLI and CrossFire solutions. Lynnfield will still feature quad-cores running with HyperThreading to support eight total threads but the memory controller will be limited to dual-channel DDR3 rather than the triple-channel control we know of on the Core i7 parts.

Today VIA is promoting a new platform of their own design with the hope of targeting budget desktop, netbook and embedded markets with an ALL-VIA solution. Included in the mix is the VIA Nano processor, which we have discussed a few times here, the VIA VX800 chipset and S3 on-board graphics that includes DX10.1 support, HDMI output and HD content decode acceleration.

AMD isn't the only one sharing silicon today, the new Core i5 Lynnfield series is making headlines as well. There are no direct comparisons
as of yet, but the pictures at Expreview show some interesting hints at the performance of the new chip. It uses a different socket, LGA 1160, and will be priced below $200, so do not imagine a direct competitor to the Core i7 especially if Intel does wait until Q3 2009 to start selling these chips.

AMD's new 'Kuma' core is here, in the form of the 2.7GHz X2 7750 and the 2.5GHz X2 7550. The biggest changes to these processors are the inclusion of features normally found in the X3 series, like the L3 cache and HyperThreading 3. bit-tech benchmarked them through their usual series of applications and games and saw it beat out similarly priced Intel offerings.

In the one corner you have Intel's new Xeon lineup, and in the other corner you have AMD's Opteron refresh. Neither of these parts will make a big impact on home computing, but anyone running a server will be more than a little interested. In the third instalment of their series on the architecture of Nehalem, AnandTech explores the cache size, specifically the itsy-bitsy L2 cache. There is a big trade off in size and latency, much like in any other part and any way to cut latency inside the processor it's self will give some nice returns. They also talk to Intel about the next process, 32nm so head over for bit of prognostication about the near future.

Tonight at midnight AMDsent out the press release with the formal announcement of their new
45nm 'Shanghai'-based Opteron processors for the server and workstation
markets. There is a lot of great information in this release including
specs of the CPU that show a much better outlook for AMD's processors
than previously expected. Frequencies will be offered as high as 2.7 GHz with TDPs of only 75 watts theoretically indicating that high clock rates should be inbound for both server and desk

[H]ard|OCP has been spending a lot of time with the new Core i7 processors, testing and retesting as new BIOS, motherboards, RAM and overclocking tweaks have surfaced. One of the biggest hurdles has been cooling these new CPUs, all the previous experience with Core2 no longer applies. There is a video and chart that shows just what to expect with a Core i7 965 and stock cooling ... it's not pretty.

Since the closest you can get to an i7 system is to read a review until Intel finally releases it in the not too distant future, you just can't overclock them yet. That hasn't stopped reviewers from pushing these chips as hard as they can manage. To get an idea what you can expect when you can finally buy one for yourself, drop by bit-tech and see how they made out.

Nehalem is here and it arrived in a huge way, with well over two dozen reviews for you to dig through and have your questions answered. Does the triple channel memory actually improve performance ... yes. Does the new architecture handle multiple cores better than Core2 ... Yes, and in ways you have never seen before. We have been hearing rumors about a potential connection between the CPU voltage of the upcoming Intel Nehalem processor and the system memory for a few weeks but now we have some much more concrete evidence. Images at this site of the ASUS P6T X58 motherboard reveal a sticker on the DIMM slots that says the following:
"...DIMMs with voltage setting over 1.65v may damage the CPU..."
Will BIOS work arounds be the answer for this?
