Before you start off on Josh's detailed review of the new Phenom II processors, consider the good side of this release; the 2.8GHz X3 720 BE should sell for a bit over $150, the 2.6GHz X4 810 (not unlocked BE) will be under $200. That puts them in competition with the Intel E8500 and similarly priced chips, it is not a Corei7 killer, the cheapest Core i7 920 is still almost $300 and that doesn't include the price of the motherboard. Legion Hardware wanted to see what effect the new processors have on the performance given by a GTX 295. The list of processors tested is quite long, covering Core i7 and newer Core2 processors from Intel as well as a pair of Phenom II and original flavour Phenoms on AMD's side. The newer processors can certainly feed data at a pace the GTX 295 can appreciate, but it would seem that there is a limit to what even that mighty GPU can handle.

An interesting interview at LapTopMag.com, posted over at TGDaily, takes some quotes from NVIDIA's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang on how CPUs like Intel's Atom processor will affect the world of hardware and software industries. He claims that a netbooks are only called netbooks by Intel marketing and in reality they are just under-powered PC, and also that a large install base of netbook PCs will eventually cause problems for the PC world when users actually try to use them with newer software.

According to this report, Intel has decided to pull the plug on the 45nm CPU/GPU combos that were due out in 2009 known as Auburndale and Havendale. These were going to be two-chip parts: one that included a dual-core HyperThreaded CPU the other chip a GPU.
Now instead Intel is going to wait for the 32nm process and move Arandale up 6 months or so into early 2010.

The arrival of the Phenom II X4 940 heralds a slew of overclocking articles

Just yesterday our intrepid Jeremy had reported that Digitimes was reporting that there were issues with AMD's DDR-3 controller in their latest 45 nm parts. I was actually somewhat surprised by this information, as I keep my ear pretty close to the grindstone looking for those two birds in a bush, and even I had not heard of such a thing. So I sent a couple of emails off to other folks, and they too had not heard so much of a peep about potential problems with AMD's DDR-3 memory controller.

For the past several podcasts (thanks to those folks for listening) we have lamented the fact that we have seen so few VIA Nano based products on the market. The CPU has been out for 9+ months now, and the promise and potential of these products was nearly unlimited considering how netbooks and low power/inexpensive PCs are some of the fastest growing markets in the PC industry. While a few manufacturers have adopted the VIA Nano, it has been pretty unspectacular when considering uptake and media coverage.

The competition between AMD and Intel has heated up thanks to the new Phenom II, though perhaps not in exactly the way people wanted. The performance crown still rests firmly on Intel's head, the Phenom II just can't reach that high. The value crown is pretty much glued to AMD's head, as it has been for a while now. It's just that the increased performance of the Phenom II coupled with the limited price increase compared to previous models has settled it even more firmly on AMD.

Phenom II is here and it lays the smack down on the original Phenom. Unfortunately it is not stomping Intel's Core i7 line, it's main competitor, nor does it beat out similarly clocked Core2 CPUs. However, at an estimated price of $275, about $900 cheaper than the similarly clock Intel 965 and it will work happily in existing AM2 systems; no new RAM required. It doesn't look like AMD will be taking the performance crown away from Intel, though it's ability to take higher voltages and the ease of upgrading will likely sell a lot of chips to AMD fans.

A source at Digitimes is reporting that VIA plans to have upgraded Nano processors ready late in 2009 and in early 2010. Apparently the Nano 3000 series will be released in Q3 of 2009 and will add support for SSE4 instructions and dual-core Nano 3000-based processors should begin mass production in Q1 2010. While this is definitely good news, we had really been hoping to dual-core processors from VIA much ealier than that in order to keep Intel's line of products in check.

After its rather quiet release two weeks ago, the Athlon X2 7750 is now available from several online retailers (Newegg and Mwave). I was expecting these products to be available right at launch, but that was not to be the case. Perhaps the Christmas rush was causing the orders to be pushed back a bit? Regardless, there are now products on shelves and the pricing is hitting right where expected. Mwave has the 7750 for $79 while Newegg is offering it for $74.99. Undoubtedly these prices will further erode, and all of AMD's dual core offerings are very nicely priced

A new post on Digitimes has some interesting information about AMD's upcoming CPU schedule for 2009. First, the post claims to know that AMD will offer six 45nm processors under the Athlon brand including the X4 615 and 605 as well as a triple core Athlon X3 420 and 410 - frequencies are not listed.

A curious thread over at HardOCP seems to indicate that at least one lucky fellow was able to buy an AMD Phenom II processor a bit earlier than he was supposed to. Intel's upcoming Lynnfield core is based on the Nehalem architecture but adds in an integrated PCI Express 2.0 hub thereby officially nixing the north bridge from the world of PCs going forward. The PCIe configuration can be setup as a single x16 connection or a pair of x8 ports for SLI and CrossFire solutions. Lynnfield will still feature quad-cores running with HyperThreading to support eight total threads but the memory controller will be limited to dual-channel DDR3 rather than the triple-channel control we know of on the Core i7 parts.

Today VIA is promoting a new platform of their own design with the hope of targeting budget desktop, netbook and embedded markets with an ALL-VIA solution. Included in the mix is the VIA Nano processor, which we have discussed a few times here, the VIA VX800 chipset and S3 on-board graphics that includes DX10.1 support, HDMI output and HD content decode acceleration.

AMD isn't the only one sharing silicon today, the new Core i5 Lynnfield series is making headlines as well. There are no direct comparisons
as of yet, but the pictures at Expreview show some interesting hints at the performance of the new chip. It uses a different socket, LGA 1160, and will be priced below $200, so do not imagine a direct competitor to the Core i7 especially if Intel does wait until Q3 2009 to start selling these chips.

AMD's new 'Kuma' core is here, in the form of the 2.7GHz X2 7750 and the 2.5GHz X2 7550. The biggest changes to these processors are the inclusion of features normally found in the X3 series, like the L3 cache and HyperThreading 3. bit-tech benchmarked them through their usual series of applications and games and saw it beat out similarly priced Intel offerings.
