You have two important jobs to do today, if you have not already done so.  The first is to listen to the brand new episode of the PC Perspective Podcast and share it with a dozen friends.  The second is to read through Allyn’s review of the Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green drive.  If you have done either of those jobs, you already know that this drive may spin at 5400RPM and barely ever hit it’s top speed of 7200RPM, but it still can compete with those that always spin at 7200RPM.  Any more information than that and it would spoil your enjoyment, so get reading and listening.
“So long as you can get accustomed to having your large, stagnant data a seperate ‘mass storage’ drive, the slower access times and rotational speeds will have little effect on your daily use. The Caviar Green series starts to make sense when you realize your bulk data does not necessarily need to be spinning at 10,000 RPM, and the lower heat output will likely result in greater longevity of your storage medium. This is especially true if you don’t have the greatest ventilation in your particular application (i.e. DVR’s).”
