Western Digital sent out news this morning about the release of a new member of the VelociRaptor hard drive family.  A desktop ready VelociRaptor hard drive came out in April of this year and quickly took its place as the fastest available hard drive on the market; now Western Digital is releasing a 2.5″ version of the VelociRaptor for enterprise applications.

Western Digital Releases 2.5" VelociRaptor 10,000 RPM HDD - Storage 4

The new 2.5″ VelociRaptor is basically the same as the 3.5″ desktop version without the attached heat spreader – it still features a 10,000 RPM spindle speed, 3.0 Gb/s data transfer speeds, up to 300 GB capacities and incredibly impressive overall performance.  We showed you in our original review that Western Digital had obviously taken a server/blade-ready HDD form factor and adjusted it to the desktop market – now Western Digital is taking the next logical step and releasing an enterprise-branded version of the hard drive for blades and 1U/2U servers.

The VelociRaptor 3.5″ drive is really a 2.5″ drive set in an enclosure for integration with standard desktop chassis

Enterprise customers will get the performance of SAS with the connectivity simplicity of standard SATA drives and a mean-time-between-failure rating of 1.4 million hours.  In case you might need a reminder of the performance the VelociRaptor drive provided in its desktop form:
