Today Western Digital is taking the covers off a brande new 2.5″ hard drive: the Scorpio 250GB.  The drive features a 5400 RPM spin rate, 8MB of cache and a 12ms seek time making it one of the fastest mobile hard drives on the market.  It also uses WD “WhisperDrive” technology to allow the disk to run quieter than competing products, a benefit to notebook users everywhere.

The Scorpio 250GB does use perpendicular recording technolgy and is now about to fit 125GB on each platter of the 2.5″ hard drive; a new high as far I can tell in the consumer HDD segment.

Western Digital “IntelliSeek” technology is also implemened in the drive; it enables the HDD To use less power than previous models by smoothing out the head movement between read tracks on the disc, avoiding the quick, jerking movements that are typical and that WD claims use much more power.

LAKE FOREST, Calif. – May 21, 2007 – Western Digital Corp. (NYSE: WDC) today announced it is now shipping its 250 GB WD Scorpio™ 2.5-inch Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives. The drives employ perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology to achieve the highest capacity available in a small form factor drive and have WD proprietary features that make the drive quiet, use less power and run at cool operating temperatures.

According to market research firm, IDC, adoption of PMR technology in mobile 2.5-inch hard drives will sustain an increase in the average capacity shipped close to the average growth rate of 32 percent for the past five years. The firm states that by 2011, shipments of mobile 2.5-inch hard drives will more than double 2006 shipment volumes.*
