“MSI’s new X399 SLI PLUS is
“MSI’s new X399 SLI PLUS is an optimized workstation motherboard”
No It’s not as that would be the Epyc/Socket SP3 single socket motherboards that are real Wokstation Motherboards. X399 is not Certified/Validated for ECC usage. Supporing “ECC” and Certified/Validated for for ECC usage are two very dufferent things.
The Epyc Options are affordable enough(unlike Intel’s Xeon platform) and AMD’s users do not need to use any consumer variants in an attempt at affording a real Workstation Hardware/Firmware ecosystem that is tested Certified/Validated for ECC memory.
Epyc/SP3 supports RDIMM, LRDIMM and Epyc/SP3 MBs are Certified/Validated to support ECC. The Epyc 7401P is a 24 core/48 thread SKU at $1075 that only costs $76 dollars more than the TR 1950X($999) and the Gigabyte MZ31-AR0 (rev. 1.0) single socket motherboard is running $610-$625 online and that SP3 motherboard supports 128 PCIe lanes and 8 memory channels. So the Epyc/SP3 deal has twice as many PCIe lanes/memory channels and the 7401P has 8 more cores/16 more threads(24 cores/48 threads) for ony $75 dollars more than the TR 1950X’s(16 cores/32 threads) $999.
Do not be fooled because AMD’s Epyc/SP3 trounces Threadripper/X399 in features 2 to 1 for Workstation PCIe lane counts and Memory counts and the Epyc/SP3 platform is actually tested certified/validated for ECC and that’s in that ECC support is in the warrenty for Epyc/SP3 MB parts.
Does this MSI motherboard support dual 10 gigabit ethernet or the other remote management features/multi-MI25 point to point features etc! Look at the Epyc/Sp3 MB ecosystem ad see whta a real workstation platform supports.
