Our collection of videos comparing the AMD A8-3850 Llano APU to the Sandy Bridge-based Core i3-2105 have been very popular.  We thought we would wrap up 2011 with one final video that looks at the integrated graphics solutions on both processors in five of the top games released in 2011.  Here is what and how we compared them:

  • Batman: Arkham City - 1920x1080 - Low
  • Portal 2 - 1920x1080 - Very High
  • Battlefield 3 - 1366x768 - Low
  • Skyrim - 1920x1080 - Low
  • Modern Warfare 3 - 1920x1080 - High

Not to give away the secret but...

I don't dispute the results, but I would note the following:
1) this is on the top end Llano desktop part; on mobile the difference would be smaller due to lower graphics clocks on mobile Llano (~30% reduction). In addition, when Llano laptops are on battery mode, they drop clocks a further 30%. Thus, Llano performance for gaming on the go, the differences would be much smaller.
2) There are several Llano SKUs in both mobile and desktop - the lower end ones (A4, A6) have fewer SIMDs and lower performance than shown here.
3) Core i3 2105 can deliver playable frame rates for all of these titles except BF3 if you run a bit lower settings and/or resolutions. For example, in MW3, try running without MSAA instead of 2xAA. Maybe drop to 16x10 resolution or 13x7.
4) Ivybridge is coming soon...

ryan:from what i saw on the web it seems that in gaming the a8 beat anything intel send amd way if this is true.then this is probably the cheapest solution to get affordable gaming to the mass!as we know a8 3870 is coming out soon and with the fiasco of fx i bet this platform will get a lot of support from amd!

You guys are much more knowledgeable than the comments on YouTube! :)

Yes, we are compare the top end AMD APU versus a low-end Core i3 - but they are the same price, that is what matters to consumers most.
