A report published by TechPowerUp suggests NVIDIA will soon be cutting prices across their existing GeForce lineup, with potential price changes reaching consumers in time for the holiday shopping season.
So what does this report suggest? The GTX 980 drops to $449, the GTX 970 goes to $299, and the GTX 960 goes to $179. These are pretty consistent with some of the sale or post-rebate prices we’ve seen of late, and such a move would certainly even things up somewhat between AMD and NVIDIA with regard to cost. Of course, we could see an answer from AMD in the form of a price reduction from their R9 300-series or Fury/Nano. We can only hope!
We’ve already seen prices come down during various black Friday sales on several GPUs, but the potential for a permanent price cut makes for interesting speculation if nothing else. Not to disparage the source, but no substantive evidence exists to directly point to a plan by NVIDIA to lower their GPU prices for some 900-series cards, but it would make sense given their competition from AMD at various price points.
Here’s to lower prices going forward.
does this mean that pascal is
does this mean that pascal is progressing nominally? clearing stock/making price points available for new skus?? 16nm gpu in Q1 of 2016?????
i think its just ‘holiday sales’ motivated tho… 🙁
Rumours say Q2, but some
Rumours say Q2, but some think it would be impractical before Q3. That said, NVIDIA's been stockpiling chips for a while, so maybe they'll get a Q2 out there? Q1 makes basically zero sense, though.
That would mean launching a new architecture before all their trade shows that explain it, while consumers are recovering from Christmas debt, with less time to build up inventory. Usually, the only products that launch in January/February/early March are business-focused, because many companies align their fiscal year to end in April (tax season). Thus you have a lot of departments looking to dump cash to clean their budgets so managers don't cut them next year, and they get to buy the big, one-time expenses they've been eying.
Christmas debt? People put
Christmas debt? People put themselves through that?
In the US where people
In the US where people consider a tax refund as a form of savings.. Sadly yes.
As opposed to other nations
As opposed to other nations where people consider unsustainable entitlements to be retirement plans? People everywhere are retarded and are bad at math.

I’m assuming that you’re referring to the GTX 970 when you say “the GTX goes to $299” in the second sentence after the picture.

It almost seems like your source either used wccftech as their source, or just inferred from the recent holiday price cuts that have shown up on newegg(haven’t seen the cuts on amazon), or maybe they used both.
http://wccftech.com/nvidia-cuts-prices-900-serie/
and not to leave AMD out of it, they have cut prices as well. You can find the fury x on newegg for $589

Odd to see nvidia breaking
Odd to see nvidia breaking away from their Apple-like pricing practice.
They don’t. Newegg dropped
They don’t. Newegg dropped prices for holidays and probably brack friday cyber monday and other American only traditions.
That’s because they didn’t
That’s because they didn’t get their die shrink this year it appears. It’s probably not cost effective enough and will just skip it and do pascal in the summer/fall 16.
or maybe they have some timed marketing releases with oculus
Piggy backing on the theme of
Piggy backing on the theme of the article, quite a few variants of the 750ti, can be had for well under $100. Not a bad chip for 1080p, all things considered. Some are even as low as 89 us, after rebate.
If they drop the 960 to $179,
If they drop the 960 to $179, who in their right mind would buy the 950? Only if they drop it (the 950) to something like $139.99, or better yet, put the 750 Ti out there for $99.00.
The Sapphire 380 4GB has been
The Sapphire 380 4GB has been as low as $189 for a couple months they had to lower the price to compete.
I understand; my point is in
I understand; my point is in regards to the differential between the 960 and 950. Customers who buy a 950 at this point would be those who walk into a Best Buy, and that’s all they have left on the shelf. If you can save $159 (or more for some of the custom cooler 950 models) I think you can spend an extra 20 on the 960.
Newegg has the Gigabyte 2GB
Newegg has the Gigabyte 2GB 960 listed for $179 and the ASUS GTX 960 TURBO-GTX960-OC-2GD5 2GB for $179 plus a $30 rebate card bringing the cost down to $150. That’s on Tuesday so the Cyber Monday prices should be over and done with.
Techpowerup used one of the
Techpowerup used one of the two articles from wccftech and unfortunately you failed to look at the first posts under that tpu article.
If newegg owns AMD and Nvidia and if newegg is the only retailer on planet earth, then this article is correct. In any other case you should consider rewriting it.
newegg is offering price reductions for AMD cards also.
Everything you’ve pointed out
Everything you’ve pointed out is stated in the article above.
Nope. The title talks about
Nope. The title talks about NVIDIA getting ready to cut prices which is wrong. In the article does point out that this is a speculation based on seasonal price cuts, but it doesn’t say that this whole speculation is based only on newegg. Newegg is not the alpha and the omega. USA is not planet Earth. People seems to forget/ignore that. Also in the article there is a hope for AMD to follow with price cuts when in fact wccftech started the two article market report from AMD first and followed with Nvidia latter.
Anyway. The articles at Wccftech where complete wrong taking one example and making it global. Any copy of those articles with AMD and Nvidia on the title instead of newegg are wrong. TPU copied only the one that advertises Nvidia and ignored the one about AMD price cuts FROM NEWEGG – how strange – and Sebastian didn’t spent much time looking at the few first comments there, that would have hint him about where did TPU found that info.
It makes sense that a tech
It makes sense that a tech site based in the US, and who get’s most of it’s viewership from the same place, would treat the matter as such. On the other end of the argument they don’t say that price slashing is happening in all regions. It rarely every does. Pricing of any product is going to be set based on local demand. Why would you even be hung up on such a minute detail?
As far as I know, these are
As far as I know, these are simply rumours.
Eventually, MSRP prices will drop to make room for new products or when the ideal mass production point is reached.
Reduced prices for the holidays is a vendors choice and not controlled by nVidia or AMD (maybe influenced).
It’s just like the announcements of price drop during the summer. It did happen, but only the UK and USA vendors had them. Canada was left out once again — and many other countries —
I don’t see this as real news, sadly.
this brings up a good, yet
this brings up a good, yet ultimately dumb question, as the answer is most likely ‘no’. but are we ever going to see the flagship single chip gpu NOT debut w/a msrp of $500 or more? iirc, the 7970 and the 580 are the ones that got this recent trend started. and the 980ti was now what, $650? the pendulum needs to start to swing in the other direction, at least for my wallets sake
With APUs/iGPUs eliminating
With APUs/iGPUs eliminating the low end cow and moving aggressively against the middle end cards under $150 and latter under $200, considering also that people keep their cards for much more time before upgrading, companies are forced to push performance AND prices higher. Titan was an excellent tool for Nvidia to create the $999 price point with 980Ti being now the second card in hierarchy, not the top as it was the case with 7970 and 580(excluding two GPU designs).
