A report from VideoCardz.com shows what appears to be an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics card with a cooler similar to the "Founders Edition" GTX 1080/1070 design.
Is this the GTX 1060 reference design? (Image via VideoCardz.com)
The image comes via Reddit (original source links in the VideoCardz post), and we cannot verify the validity of the image – though it certainly looks convincing to this writer.
So what does VideoCardz offer as to the specifications of this GTX 1060 card? Quoting from the post:
"NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 will most likely use GP106 GPU with at least 1280 CUDA cores. Earlier rumors suggested that GTX 1060 might get 6 GB GDDR5 memory and 192-bit memory bus."
We await official word on the GTX 1060 from NVIDIA, which VideoCardz surmises "is expected to hit the market shortly after Radeon RX 480".
bring on the competition!
bring on the competition!
it’s taken 2 years and all we
it’s taken 2 years and all we are seeing is 970x performance at the $200 price point? So just a reduction in cost of $100 in 2 years.
This is not what i would call competition.
You are confusing competition
You are confusing competition with innovation. What you are talking about is innovation. That is, improving production processes to reduce cost and power consumption at a specific performance point (or improving performance and power consumption at a specific price point).
The person you replied to was talking about competition with AMD and their 400 series cards. Cant really be critical of his comment when you are talking about two different things.
40% Price cut seems
40% Price cut seems significant. Not to mention it’s got no where to go but down.
Yes as long as there is
Yes as long as there is actual competition and Nvidia is not using its supply chain advantage over AMD to unfairly keep AMD out of the OEM laptop market the same way that Intel has for the x86 CPU/SOC based laptop market. It’s harder to influence any of the PC gaming system home builder market, as that market gets its CPU/SOC/GPU parts through a different direct to consumer channel.
There will be plenty of DX11 games/benchmarks still remaining and AMD tested against Nvidia with DX11 and older benchmarks in an attempt to downplay any DX12/Vulkan advantage that AMD’s hardware may or may not have, so readers will have to realize that between the RX 480/Polaris release date(in Just one more day) and the following year there will be much change over to the newer DX12/Vulkan graphics API based gaming ecosystems for both Windows and Linux based gaming on both Nvidia’s and AMD’ competing Pascal and Polaris SKUs! So anyone who declares a winner this early in the game is probably influenced somehow beyond the objective reasoning towards the more sponsored subjective reasoning, or even the outright illogical fanboy non-reasoning types of conclusions.
Remember marketing/advertising money talks, as does review sample bias, so there will be plenty of benchmarks to debate from all the benchmarking websites, and even the users’ own benchmarks once the hardware is in the end users’ hands.

you have source for this? AFAIK with 5k and 6k series AMD dominate the mobile market. the market share back then was the exact opposite of dekstop market share; where AMD owning more than 60% of the laptop discrete gpu market. but things change when Rory Read helm the company. one thing he did was rejecting OEM deal if OEM did not want to sell AMD product in a volume that he thinks worth the R&D developing the product. this problem did not happen to AMD only. it also happen to nvidia. but they want to claw more market share. so even if the R&D end up expensive and the returns are small they keep doing it for the sake of gaining market share on mobile. good thing was with kepler now they have hardware that is competitive with AMD in terms of power efficiency. what they did not expect was that AMD pretty much giving up on most OEM deal except for Apple maybe.
If it’s a fake is a really
If it’s a fake is a really well done one.
I personally think that there will not be a “Founders Edition” of that card.
Interestingly, the pcb looks shorter than the cooler
it is. nvidia x60 card has

Can 1280 CUDA cores threaten
Can 1280 CUDA cores threaten RX480?

It’s definitely possible but
It’s definitely possible but only time will tell.

Seriously though to be fair, the GTX 1060 will most likely have 1280 CUDA cores to it, half the GTX 1080. Which is the same thing that NVIDIA did with the GTX 980 / GTX 960, so it makes sense.
So if you follow this same pattern, performance wise, half the performance of a GTX 1080 would give you performance around the GTX 980.
So in this case
GTX 1060 = GTX 980 level of performance (give or take 5%)
Latest rumors put the performance of the RX480 in between the GTX 970 and GTX 980, though I would expect AIB’s to offer much faster ones, and who knows, now that AMD knows about the GTX 1060, AMD could give their card a slight bump in the stock speeds to give it a little more kick against the GTX 1060.
Well if you calculate pure
Well if you calculate pure fp32 perf then gtx980 with “boost” clocks at 1216MHz gives you 2048*1.216*2=4980.736GFlops, which would need 1280 cuda cores to be clocked at 4980.736GFlops/(2*1280)=1.946GHz. So no change in hell for the stock.
On the other hand gtx 970 with “boost” clocks at 1178 MHz
2*1664*1.178=3920.384GFlops thus “1280cc” clocks 3920.384GFlops/(2*1280)=1.531GHz. I Would imagine too low for stock boost.
So I expect GTX 1060(in case of 1280cc) performance between gtx970 and gtx980.
Interesting point. Thanks.

Looks like nvidia is leaking
Looks like nvidia is leaking pics to try and stop AMD’s hype train.
E for effort, unless it’s cheaper than Polaris at only 6GB.
both company actually doing

I’m going to bet that the GTX
I’m going to bet that the GTX 1060 will likely fall in the $250 to $300 price range at least, since the 1070 base MSRP is closer to $400. I find it hard to believe that Nvidia would sell it for less than that. I would guess a potential GTX 1050 card might sell for the $200ish range?
they could also go to the
they could also go to the rout of $200 for 3gb Vram and $250 fir 6gb
depends on how it perform.
depends on how it perform. but the x60 part usually fills $200-$250. but if they want to engage price war with AMD they will price it at such.
I expect the 1060 to be at
I expect the 1060 to be at least $50 more expensive, slightly slower, no Async support, and less VRAM competitively to the 480 4GB and 8GB models.
