DigitalFoundry Shows Off Battlefield 1 Alpha PC Settings

Battlefield 1 looks pretty good. To compare how it scales between its settings, DigitalFoundry took a short amount of video at 4K across all four, omnibus graphics settings: Low, Medium, High, and Ultra. These are, as should be expected for a high-end PC game, broken down into more specific categories, like lighting quality and texture filtering, but I can't blame them for not adding that many permutations to a single video. It would just be a mess.

The rendering itself doesn't change too much between settings to my eye. Higher quality settings draw more distant objects than lower ones, and increases range that level of detail falls off, too. About a third of the way into the video, they show a house from a moderate distance. The lowest quality version was almost completely devoid of shadowing and its windows would not even draw. The lighting then scaled up from there as the settings were moved progressively toward Ultra.

While it's still Alpha-level code, a single GTX 1080 was getting between 50 and 60 FPS at 4K. This is a good range to be in for a G-Sync monitor, as the single-card machine doesn't need to deal with multi-GPU issues, like pacing and driver support.

Setting the preset to medium (below high) is where it starts to get bland. Unfortunately, the fog as well as rubble falling directly in your face is pretty hard on performance. But also, I notice that at I think medium or lower, I believe the "rain" effects on objects might have an odd-looking effect at or below that point. What I think happens is that the "reflection" in the water effect, really noticeable if you're down in the trenches behind A, because so low that it becomes like older quality building window reflections where's it's just 1 texture and looks kinda odd or trippy, except it's it's spread across every object in front of you in some places. What his causes is for everything to look like it's ghosting (which some might no from certain displays). 2 of the same object, with one lagging behind the other as you rotate or move around. In this case, it's pretty much everything in the environment. At the moment, even having it set to high can be rather rough on a GTX 770 4GB. There's also currently a crash that happens at unknown times on Nvidia. Curious if lower settings make it happen less frequently.

Does anyone know if this is an AMD sponsered game or did they switch to nvidia?

I don't know about AMD but I heard the machines used at the live stream had Nvidia gtx1080's and gsync monotors. Looks good for those of us who like Nvidia and the Battlefield series.

I remember reading somewhere that BF1 has a dogtag for playing on an AMD-powered system. I don't know if that means just an AMD graphics card, or an AMD graphics card and an AMD CPU. But if it's true, then I'd say it's probably AMD-sponsored.

Just like in the rest of the recent BF games those trees are unnaturally swaying when there isnt enough environmental effects to make you feel like its windy. Just a BF3/BF4 re-skin.

Well, apparently DICE didn't get the memo or have some odd historical revisionism going on.

Not that I care about realism or historical accuracy, but when you tout your game as being historically accurate (not entirely sure but the fanbase for whatever reason thinks it's accurate in any way, shape, or form.)

How do you know he's American? What does that say about you and your opinion of Americans? WWI is still regularly defined by its trench warfare by historians, so perhaps it is you and your nation that has the intelligence problem?

I assume that a game based on trench warfare would not be very fun, so that's likely why it focuses on traditional BF gameplay instead.
