Tom’s Hardware reports that a source within AMD has indicated that the company may release their upcoming Southern Islands GPU earlier than expected.  Previous rumors suggested that AMD would have their performance desktop graphics cards out in the first quarter of 2012 with the lower clocked and mobile processors coming out a bit sooner than that.

If this new information turns out to be true, we may be seeing the high performance desktop graphics cards released in limited quantities of 7000 to 10,000 units in December with a full rollout of the company’s 28nm graphics card lineup in the months following.  Specifically, the first cards may be available as soon as December 6th, 2011.  It remains to be seen whether or not the lower power cards will still be released before the high performance desktop cards.

Personally, I'm interested to see how AMD's approach with their Southern Islands GPU will match up against Nvidia's current and future (more) general purpose computing design.  Are you excited for Southern Islands?

I have this "feeling" that there is going to be "more" of a difference between the new upcoming cards, if I was a betting man I'd put my money more in Nvidea camp then AMD solely based off Bulldozer, they basically will promise u the world and give you ....Bulldozer, on top of that they expect a 10% increase with Trinity.......10% is not gonna cut it, 20% is gonna cut it.....50% by 2014? They basically roadmapped failure in terms of performance.

Haha true. Their CPU's are really poor but the GPU's I like. I just wish you could pick application-specific settings and had proper 3D like Nvidia. There are no desktop monitors for AMD (not normal ones).

I plan to shop for a new graphics card early next year, so I'm certainly excited about Southern Islands. Here's hoping for speedy 28nm releases by both AMD and Nvidia.

Bulldozer isn't that bad considering the price. It seems like everyone is comparing it to a $300 i7 (the Bulldozer is around $270). I can't wait for the Radeon 7xxx and GeForce 6xx battle to commence.

2500k is $220 and as far as I can see with current AMD drivers, and BIOS, it eats Bulldozers for breakfast and does it using less power.
