The complaints about the emasculated Start button seem to have hit a Threshold

Two rumours about Microsoft are making the rounds right now, the first about the impending death of one their OSes is pretty easy to understand; there is no polite way to describe WinRT.  The second is both more interesting and also harder to believe, Project Threshold could possibly see the return of a fully functional Start button to a newly updated desktop version called Windows 8.2 as apparently Service Packs are no longer cool.  Project Threshold is bigger than just a button as the rumours have this updating Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One with the possibility that WinRT gets rolled into the Windows Phone OS.  While there are ways to modify Win 8.1 to allow a more classical interface it will be a big step forward in usability if it becomes native.  You can follow the links at The Register to the source of these rumours.

"According to Winsupersite, Microsoft is planning the return of the Windows Start button under the codename "Threshold", and this will be the first time we'll see it in its original form since Windows 7."

Project Threshold, is just more M$ somke and mirrors! The fight will never be over until M$ takes windows 7, sans any of the TIFKAM/App store/Services that M$ added to 8, and updates 7 with only the necessary under the hood improvments. If people want a M$ app store or limited runtime application ecosystem, then let them add it on to the untouched base OS, kind of like having the option of installing the .net runtime. M$ should never expect to retain its total control over the PC ecosystem ever again, as enterprises big and small, and governments have tired of vendor lockin, and the movement towards computer OSs as vital infrastructure not controlled by one entity will become the norm. Look for more alternative BSD/Linux distros with UIs designed to look and feel like windows XP, or 7! No matter what actions M$ takes, it can not escape its past, and what has gone around, is now coming around, to give M$ its final comeuppance. To all those software companies who only offer windows based applicatons, you will be remembered, but not used.

I hear whining.

December 10, 2013 | 03:42 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

Only the wining at the M$ shareholders meeting, when they demand the Ouster of both Ballmer and Gates! Yes the comedy team of Gates and Ballmer, laid their last egg(8), and were unceremoniously hooked and dragged off, stage left, and out the backdoor!

EDIT: wining to whining.

Also The Wine-ing as the Chinese will take the already completely reverse engineered windows XP API, hidden and otherwise, and pimp out the linux based wine software to run all those necessary windows applications! The same applies for windows 7, when M$ refuses to extend its EOL also! The whole world will be Wine-ing and dining on that pimped out codebase for sure! And one day, starting with Linux, SteamOS, and other birdTux based OSs and applications, that will totally supplant the need for windows *.* OS to run any applications including the ones that are currently tied to Redmondian APIs. Where there is a will, there will be a Wine, to ease the migration, from monkeyboy spawn!

And another beef jerky, tidbit, to jawbone, Sony, M$'s chief console gaming rival, could very well, with little effort, get its laptops/PCs up and running with BSD, just like the PS4 is now, should M$ continue to use its crApp store/PC world domination attempts at forcing a M$ closed ecosystem onto that 3rd party OEM's laptop/PC hardware!
There are other BIG companies using the BSD based ecosystem, and plenty of necessary applications that run in BSD world! That beef jerky is pretty dry, better chase it down with some whiskey, TIFKAM SAM!

and here I thought that Microsoft always wanted to create a market for third party start menus.

Your move MS... fix it and i'll upgrade.

otherwise w7 isn't going ANYWHERE.

interesting article, several of the features that will probably be in the next release( an OS that is not even 2 years old with 2 point releases- now that is new..) will be "Innovated" from the 3rd party space.

as microsoft continues to move down the Vista trail on this OS getting the OS changed to meet the customer need- i predict the next OS will arrive fairly quickly and will be like 7 was- efficient, works well and will sell

and thus Windows 8 is following Vista's footsteps.....

All M$ would have to do is take W7, devoid of all the TIFKAM kruft/services/runtimes, and apply any under the hood True improvments, and that includes System Image backups(W7 style), and the W7 media players! Start with a functional Base OS, consumer productivity SKU, then offer a win32/win64/.net/etc based suite of applications/runtimes
/services for those who actually want to optionally install the Metroland runtime and UI! M$ could then offer a home/small business/enterprise OS with all the business friendly applications/server/services. What M$ does with its own branded phone/tablet ecosystem is M$'s own business, but on peoples 3rd party OEM Laptop/PC hardware, that many people purchase from 3rd party OEMs, M$ would do better practicing a hands off approach!

Gates needs to go TOO, for hiring his college poker buddy, bumbling Steve Ballmer, to run M$! Ballmer needs to be completely off the M$ BOD, at the very least, with the possability of Gates remaining as NON-voting member!

ballmer was fine for a while...he had a good run, things just got away from him.

Emasculated start button,.....?

How can you emasculate something that wasn't masculine in the first place,......?

December 11, 2013 | 03:02 PM - Posted by Jeremy Hellstrom

emasculate : to make (something) weaker or less effective

Not always gender specific and a great word

Man you would not make it as far a ditch digger, in Octavian's army, and probably be the one in ten that bought it for the units screwup on the battlefield, and the screwup would most likely be your doing!
