Tropico is a long running franchise, initially dating back to 2001, of "god games". The first entry, suitably called Tropico, was suitably published by Gathering of Developers (GoD Games). The franchise is also, suitably, tongue in cheek with its portrayal of totalitarianism and corruption. El Presidente is also suitably suited in a suit.

Tropico 5 has little more than a teaser to its name but one which spoofs a famous Charlie Chaplin scene from the movie, "The Great Dictator".

The game will take place over a larger time-frame than previous titles. The player will assume control during colonization and can maintain control, albeit probably through descendents, beyond the modern era. You, as El Presidente, will again be able to appoint family members to roles and tasks.

A first for the series, at least I believe, is a four-person multiplayer mode which will be included. All players will share, or not share, a single island and its resources. Given the scale of these games I wonder how the game will handle players dropping in and dropping out. Other games have handled this problem in the past but thus-far Tropico has not. Their choice could set expectations for sequels to come.

And at this rate, I expect sequels to come for quite some time.

Tropico 5 will be available at some point in 2014 for Windows, Mac, Linux, and however many Xbox 360s are left on the market.
