I really hope that
I really hope that AND/Partners will eventually get some Intel/NUC Style form factor Devices with Raven Ridge/Newer(at 12nm) Desktop APU SKUs of at least 35-65 watts TDP.
I’m completely disappointed in what little there is in the way of potential Raven Ridge laptop Design Wins announced this late in the game with Raven Ridge/Mobile supposed to be on the market by the final quarter of 2017. So I’m really hoping that some of AMD’s patners take up an Intel/NUC sort of offering so I can get a mini-desktop system to replace my laptop and have more options than the little options users get with any OEM laptops(Single channel crap, other gimping and low/under powered 15 watt only designs).
AMD should be all over producing some Mini-Desktop refrence designs to take on the Trade Show circuit with some of their Desktop Raven Ridge/newer Desktop APU engineering samples to drum up support for some form of Zen/Vega based Mini-Desktop designs that AMD’s partners can potentially bring to market.
I’d like for there to be some form of Zen/Vega APU based options similar to Intel’s NUCs/Apple’s Mac-Mini with some Zen/Vega 35-65 watt APU inside and at least one USB 3.1 Gen 2 port for a little faster bandwidth to external drive/s. I’m seriously considering just getting a mini desktop with portable kayboard/mouse and portable USB monitor to take on the road and give up on new laptops entirely.
It’s because I want a little bit more powerful mobile solution than what can be had at 15 watts on the Thin and Light/Ultrabook laptop offerings that are really not powerful enough for my needs. So AMD AM4/APU based Bare Bones NUC/Mac-Mini form factor devices with at least one USB 3.1 Gen 2 port and 1 or 2 other Type-C gen 1 ports, gigabit Ethernet/other ports for running to monitors and such.
I’d gladly pay for a complete package Mini-Desktop system that I could take on the road with Mini-Desktop, portable Keyboard/mouse and portable Monitor(With protective case) that I could stuff into a backpack and take it with on the road for a little bit more power than the laptop OEMs are willing to offer short of getting a portable workstation.
Laptop OEMs are not too much offering many laptops as a desktop replacement options anymore short of getting an expensive gaming laptop or an even more expensive portable workstation to take on the road. And before Intel started pushing that Ultrabook/Apple style 15watt underpowered and overpriced crap on the market there where plenty of regular form factor laptops that came with 35 watt processors and better cooling solutions at a very affordable price.
Hey Ryan.
Regarding the
Hey Ryan.
Regarding the 2700U: What makes you think it’s a 35 Watt part?
AMD has officially stated they have three Suffixes for Mobile Ryzen parts: H for High Performance Mobile, U for Standard Mobile, and M for Low Power Mobile, analogous to Intel. And for while now they have not released 45 W parts, it’s more than reasonable to think that the H-parts have a max TDP of 35 Watts.
Furthermore you can find an entry for an Acer Swift 3 Laptop at Geekbench. In this line of Laptops you can only find 15 Watt Parts like the 8550U which can also be found and compared to the 2700U -> https://browser.geekbench.com/geekbench3/compare/8467402?baseline=8467992
The evidence points to the U parts having a 15W TDP, maybe configurable to 25W like the Intel counterparts.
