It has been over 20 years since Atari launched their Jaguar system, the last piece of hardware that company would make; until now perhaps. There was a mysterious announcement and the launch of a website with little more information than a movie featuring rendered wood grain and plastic. You can sign up at ataribox.com to become the first to know, if Nintendo decides to share more information. It will be very interesting to see what components they have picked to run this new console, considering the high specifications of the new Xbawkx they will either need high end silicon or a much lower price to compete. The video is down below and you can pop over to The Inquirer for more speculation if you so desire.
"The iconic company, which has had more lives than Garfield in a blender, is to release the Ataribox, which so far is shrouded in mystery, aside from the classic wood panelling that lovers of the 2300 and 2600 will know only too well."

Is their room for a 4th
Is their room for a 4th console eco system ?
What will this bring that Scorpio or The switch cant do already ?
Will this bring something over iOS or android for casual gaming ?
More power and a better developer eco system then Microsoft Scorpio ?
I hope this is an Atari retro revival.. otherwise it dead on arrival.
maybe a dedicated home social
maybe a dedicated home social casino gaming unit?
retro revival? all of those old atari games could pretty much be burned into rom that is soldered onto a circuit board inside a “retro” joystick that you plug into an hdmi port on your tv. wait, those have alreayd been done multiple times over, so yea, DOA.
DOA? Yeah, because Nintendo
DOA? Yeah, because Nintendo didn’t just sell a ton of emulator boxes for $100 called NES Classic…
I’d like to be proven wrong,
I’d like to be proven wrong, but with all the Atari-knock-off emulator console/joysticks already on the market( adn for quite a long time), who really wants another one?
Atari Jaguar. I still
Atari Jaguar. I still remember seeing AvP on CNN news and that alone was making the console serious news. But it failed. Sony nailed it with the CD drive back then. Tom and Jerry where tough to program if I remember correctly.
But I doubt today’s Atari has anything to do with that Atari. If they want to do something they should try to come out with an Atari ST emulator at least. Bringing back Atari 2600 is stupid and in my opinion just a cheap try to make some quick cash and then disappear(promising a come back will push people to buy this console even if it is garbage, just for the hope that a better one will come latter).
If they really talk about Atari 2600, then it is nothing more than a marketing stunt in my opinion. If they come up with a console that can play ST or Jaguar games, then in my eyes they would look more serious. But pong? Really?
There were some pretty
There were some pretty complex ‘late wave’ games on the 2600 – Solaris being a prime example, and 7800 had a lot of capability that was never fully tapped (although really stupid they used the same soundchip from the 2600.. you had to add the better atari 800 soundchip to the cartridge to use it = $$$).
An “everything Atari” console would be kinda fun, they could even throw in some Atari Falcon games too..
(The only console I have attached to my TV Is an Atari Jaguar with the CD add-on..)
The Atari 7800 was basically
The Atari 7800 was basically a fancy 2600, so it kinda makes sense.
I wonder. Could this be the
I wonder. Could this be the newly evolved steam box? I just have a tiny gut feeling……. but I dont think they are just gona release a “Retro” unit…… but if they could put directX steam on a wood panel 2600 box…… for 3-400$…… I would fucking buy that. PERIOD!
I’m leaning towards something
I’m leaning towards something like this as well since the whole “PC hardware” comment is about the only detail we have. Now it could refer to another x86 based system, but another locked in platform is not something I see being competitive as a “new” contender. All we can really do is wait and see.
Why do they call it a 2300?
Why do they call it a 2300? What’s the story behind it?
It gives people a nostalgia
It gives people a nostalgia woody.
