Earlier this week Gartner reported that global PC shipments in the second quarter of this year had fallen 10.9% YoY. In line with Gartner’s statistics, market research firm IDC (International Data Corp) has also released Q2 2013 results on global PC shipments. The interesting takeaway from the IDC report is the market share numbers, however. The IDC report shows that Lenovo has overtaken HP as the number one PC OEM with the highest market share.
According to IDC, global PC shipments fell 11.4% to 75.632 million units versus the same time last year. Despite taking first place, Lenovo still managed to shrink 1.4% YoY due to a 10% decrease in shipments to the Asia/Pacific market (excluding Japan) which makes up about 50% of Lenovo’s market. It still managed to outperform market forecasts by only seeing a slight decrease from 12,802,000 PC shipments in Q2 2012 to 12,619,000 in Q3 2013.
Because Lenovo’s shipments only decreased 1.4%, it managed to snag 1st place from HP which shrank 7.7% YoY. Lenovo now holds 16.7% of global PC market share versus 15% market share at the same time last year. Comparatively, HP went from 15.7% in Q2 2012 to 16.4% in Q2 2013. ASUS and Acer actually lost market share and saw decreased global PC shipments of 21.1% and 32.6% respectively.
In short, Lenovo lost the least amount of shipments in an overall declining market, so it managed to edge out HP and the other major OEMs for top spot. Although it still had a net loss (in number of shipments / growth), it performed quite well this quarter.

What do you think about Lenovo earning the most market share for global PC shipments?
If Windows 8 were not
If Windows 8 were not demonized in the eyes of the public this wouldn’t be happening, but the business sector seems to be very happy with Windows 7. Companies using Windows 7 now will still probably be using it for at least five years. (Too much work for the IT department to keep upgrading.)
Lenovo seems to be doing things right. Everything I’ve seen bought from them has continued to work reliably.
To much work, and training
To much work, and training money for companies to retrain workers to use the TIFKAM UI, and no way to recover from the lost productivity! Windows 7, is the only windows based solution for the SMB! Companies will move from XP to Windows 7, and then use windows 7, like they used XP, until Win 7’s EOL! Companies use PCs/laptops to run their business and not as entertainment portals for M$ profit!
Many companies will be reviewing their options, in light of the past ME/Vista/TIFKAM M$ madness, and more than a few will make the decision to go with other OSs! The big data companies like Google, Facebook, etc, are designing platforms that rely on open hardware and software, and have funded such development and standards! The same open hardware/software will become the mainstay technologies of the future for SMBs that could not afford the development costs on their own! These technologies are now beginning to appear in smaller more affordable SMB servers, that will be ARM based and Windows free!
Lenovo, or any other company
Lenovo, or any other company should demand from M$, the option of building new consumer hardware with Windows 7, then their sales would improve even more! With the Chinese adoption of Linux, Levono will be in a great position to develop products around the Linux OS! The Chinese education system will be cranking out millions of trained Linux professionals, and Levono will be in the number 1 spot to benifit from such a trained workforce!
Lenovo is making progress
Lenovo is making progress thanks to its cheap AIOs http://freshinfos.com/2012/05/08/lenovo-thinkcentre-tiny-desktops/ and laptops. But they wont last long. None of these companies will last long. PCs will soon be taken over by laptops.
