In today's world people are far more likely to listen to someone who is famous on one or more platform than to an expert in the topic of discussion. The dead and dying Samsung Fold phones being sent to influencers is a perfect example of this, as these somewhat famous social media stars have been ignoring the instructions and removing a protective film from the screen. Samsung was quite clear in their manual that this film is necessary to prevent the foldable screen from dying, as one of the quotes over at Ars makes quite obvious, "The phone comes with this protective layer/film. Samsung says you are not supposed to remove it. I removed it …".
When dealing with a brand new and possibly not quite ready for prime time technology, such as a foldable phone, perhaps it is worth spending the time taking a look at the manual or listening to someone who knows about the subject, rather than only listening to someone you 'know'?
"YouTuber Marques Brownlee also tried peeling off this protective layer, thinking it was just a display protector for shipping. After picking at the layout a bit, Brownlee says "the display spazzed and blacked out. Started over with a replacement."

phone dies? meh, it’s all
phone dies? meh, it’s all about the peel porn
“However, CNBC didn’t remove
“However, CNBC didn’t remove that layer, and our screen is now also failing to work properly. When opened, the left side of the flexible display, which makes up a large 7.3-inch screen, flickers consistently.”

Yet another overpriced pee finished technology… good job Samsung!
Totally agree … the problem
Totally agree … the problem is the actual issues like that one are going to be drowned out by the idiots screaming and whining.
You should be extra clear on
You should be extra clear on this point: the REVIEW units that Samsung sent out (MKBHD, etc.) did NOT have any warnings on the packaging or on the device. Supposedly the RETAIL devices will come with warnings, but it won’t matter. That plastic layer (necessary for the folding process) will eventually chip/peel on its own and your $2,000 phone will be ruined with zero support. GG
Well back to the drawing
Well back to the drawing board with that one Sammy! And maybe next time hire some engineers that are a bit better than Wile E Coyote!
Why was the protective fild
Why was the protective fild easily removable? I would’ve likely removed it too as then begin reading the manual. Kinda dumb to make an obviously-peelable plastic cover.
Gorilla Glass isn’t flexible
Gorilla Glass isn’t flexible enough to fold, so they used a softer plastic cover. Some reviewers didn’t even try to peel it off and it still came apart on its own. This is a pretty big problem with the design and can’t be blamed on people not reading a manual. Samsung gambled on this device and has already lost.
I agree in principle but I
I agree in principle but I don’t understand why Samsung is shipping g a $2000 phone with a “protective film” that is both easily removeable and easily confused for a preinstalled screen protector, especially since they just started shipping the 10 series phones with….preinstalled screen protectors. Additionally, if the screen is that easily damaged by removing the film maybe make it a little more prominent than page 7 of the reviewers guide?
Yeah really… Add a sticker
Yeah really… Add a sticker saying peel this but not this ????
I think they pushed this one
I think they pushed this one out a wee bit too early, folding glass-like stuff and curcuits ain't easy.
I just hate that the actual issues are going to be drowned out by this and we won't get a good idea what does and doesn't work.
