It's Friday, which means it's time for PC Perspective's weekly mailbag, our video show where Ryan and team answer your questions about the tech industry, the latest and greatest hardware, the process of running a tech review website, and more!
Here's what you'll find on today's show:
00:26 – EPYC CPU with X399 motherboard?
02:06 – High NAND memory prices?
03:50 – DirectX 12 image quality vs. performance?
05:47 – Optane drives for cheap laptops?
07:51 – Cause of high temps on recent Intel CPUs?
10:21 – Windows processor thread limit?
13:20 – Will the decline of SLI result in more mATX motherboards and cases?
17:19 – Guide to building the most energy efficient PC?
19:30 – Do you need 8-core CPU for gaming?

I’ve seen those eyes
I’ve seen those eyes before

My question is:
Why do you
My question is:
Why do you think video game devs/publishers accept Nvidia sponsorship/software integration on multi-platform games, when the PS4/Xbone are GCN? Is it really worth it over just going on AMD’s git hub to get their FOSS tech like tressFX? Suppose you aren’t a game dev though.

On soldering, what’s the oldest CPU you guys have that is soldered and still works? Intel’s made the argument that the TIM is for longevity, but I don’t see mass reports of soldered chips suddenly breaking. Even for the average person up to 20C lower temps is pretty damned useful for maintaining clock speeds, and those gains are why people call it “poor TIM”.
Response on Optane:
Can you use Optane in any mobile device? thought it needed a 2xx chipset and Kaby lake. Even if you could a lot of mobile devices likely don’t have M.2 slots.
Just get an old thinkpad with a quad core i5 or i7, 1080/1200p display, and a new battery/SSD then you’re set. Especially for the keyboard.
OLED monitors would not have
OLED monitors would not have the issue with the minimum framerates to prevent flicker since each pixel is its own light source.
That should mean for example, that the FREESYNC requirement for at least 2.5x the max/min ratio no longer would exist. (the 2.5x ratio is because the AMD driver has to resend the same frame and it takes time).
So if the OLED monitor was 4K@60Hz, then the next frame can be sent WHENEVER and the monitor changes. Easy peezy, no 40Hz to 60Hz range with no LFC support for that low range.
