Cancer sucks: Donate for a chance to win a GTX 1080!

Every once in a while I call upon our amazing community to help out someone in need. We have done raffles for the Down Syndrome Association, others to support members that have suffered heart attacks, and now I ask for your help in supporting my own family. My sister-in-law, a 30 year old mother of two amazing children, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer last month. As you might expect in an environment where both parents need to work to support the kids, losing your income from a semi-full-time position can have a dramatic impact.

As a result, I am raffling off an EVGA provided GeForce GTX 1080 ACX 3.0 graphics card worth over $700. In return, I ask that readers and fans of PC Perspective donate to my sister-in-law Amy's GoFundMe campaign with a minimum of $5.00. Getting even a small portion of our audience to pitch in will make a dramatic difference in the family's stability and mind set as she continues with the first several sessions of chemotherapy.

I encourage you to enter the contest below and contribute to the GoFundMe campaign. From all of us at PC Perspective and the Shrout/Roark family: Thank you.

Is that a photo of a 1080 FE in SLI with 1080 ACX?

I didn't know that was possible.

All the best with that personal battle. Let us know the progress. It's not a topic that is often shared with the public.

As far as I know, as long as they are both the same GPU, then it can be done. The only thing that might have to be done is tweak settings so each card is matched up in clock speed, memory speed, etc., since many custom cards have OC out of the box.

Thanks for the info.

On the EVGA forum, I read somewhere that it was best to use the same model and not mix-match. Maybe it's as you suggest, the fine tuning of the frequency, etc.

Nvidia confirms this:

"...Can I mix and match graphics cards from different manufacturers?
Using 180 or later graphics drivers, NVIDIA graphics cards from different manufacturers can be used together in an SLI configuration. For example, a GeForce XXXGT from manufacturer ABC can be matched with a GeForce XXXGT from manufacturer XYZ.

Can I mix and match graphics cards if one of them is overclocked by the manufacturer?
Yes. A GeForce XXXX GTX that is overclocked can be mixed with a standard clocked GeForce XXXX GTX. ..."

Donated. Heres wishing her a speedy recovery. Make sure she gets a competent doctor PLEASE! Have dealt with such uninformed quackery in recent years both in the USA and Australia.

Hello Ryan. I logged on this morning expecting to find the usual kinds of things - but instead I find this. And that's just it - you can never know what's coming. I've spent a great deal of time in hospitals - some for me, some for my girlfriend. It's tiring, and it wears you down. The most important thing is family. Knowing people are there for you is a huge mental boost. I know it's helped the two of us. It is not much at all, and I apologise for that, but I donated $10. I hope just knowing people are touched by your family's story helps in some way over the coming months.

I wish you luck.

Maybe you could also tweet about this, to get more entries?

I don't really need a 1080, but figured I'd enter. Surprisingly, Gleam let me (I've had problems with Gleam in the past).

I really hope that your sister pulls through.

Fuck cancer.

September 8, 2016 | 08:41 AM - Posted by Mike P

My dad had cancer twice, my mom had it once.. None of the battles were easy, and it eventually beat my Dad. I think of it as the monster. Thanks for allowing us to be apart of this (fighting the monster I mean).

Happy to contribute even without the 1080.

Payers and thoughts to Amy and her family.

Thanks for organizing this, Ryan and Kelly!

I didn't covet the 1080 from the start, as I always had my eye on the 1070, but I might as well enter because why the hell not right? Other than that, I just saw one of my best friends' mom went through the same roller coaster. The only thing that kept them sane was because they know they have enough for the treatment and for the worst-case scenario. 30 bucks isn't much, but I hope you guys to reach the goal.

All the best, Ryan.

Donated twice. One anonymous, and one not. I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was a child. Thankfully, there has been many major advances since then. Best wish and I hope she gets well soon.

Contributed to the fund. But also might I suggest that those whom have the compute power to spare, and as gamers you know we do, join a Folding@Home team to help the research into protein folding which may help find cures to cancer and other diseases.
Find out more here;

Consider joining the PC Perspective Folding Frogs (team #734),
or our friends at [H]ardOCP (team #33), or my team Rage3D (team #64).

To the winner of the GeForce GTX 1080 ACX 3.0 graphics card; Joining the highly ranked folding@evga team (#111065), if not already a member of another, would be a good option to express gratitude to EVGA for supplying this powerhouse of a prize.

Let's all stand up to cancer and crush it out of existence once and for all. Oh, and if you smoke; please quit now. Thanks.

What do I do if I didn't get a confirmation email?

September 13, 2016 | 10:57 AM - Posted by Barry (not verified)

I donated twice, once anon and once not (my choice, anon was in memory of someone) and never got an e-mail either. Just enter and if you win, you can look at your bank statement to get what they are looking for. Or the organizer of the GoFundMe should be able to see you on the list of donors.

Was happy to help out.

What a beautiful family.

My father has cancer also. These treatments are useless. I won't donate anything. Time to come up with the working solutions, not with a money bringing one.

I'm pretty broke right now but fuck it. Got to donate something. I'll just take a pb and j to work instead of buying lunch. First world problems.

September 19, 2016 | 08:56 AM - Posted by MrAhlefeld (not verified)

So who won this thing ??

September 19, 2016 | 09:54 AM - Posted by Barry (not verified)

I know I and a few others never got the confirmation e-mail. So I am thinking maybe there is a delay to confirm the winner donated.

All I can tell you... is the winner wasn't me.

September 20, 2016 | 03:13 PM - Posted by Anonymous (not verified)

I'm wondering if a winner was notified as well.

September 21, 2016 | 10:00 AM - Posted by Ryan Shrout

Hey guys, sorry for any issue here.

The first winner didn't respond, and I gave them 48 hours. The second winner did, but asked to not be named - the same option I give to all contest winners here.

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped out with the campaing for Amy. It means a LOT to me and to this family.

September 21, 2016 | 09:15 PM - Posted by Barry (not verified)

Poor first winner. I know I searched my spam folder tirelessly after this post so I don't think it was me.. lol.
