While its sibling, Adobe Flash, still has 2020 and the rest of 2019 to entertain you with web games, the company has officially ended support for Shockwave Player. Attempting to go to the download page redirects you to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for End of Life of Adobe Shockwave, which politely tells you to rethink your life decisions.
Joking aside, it is a bit sad to see all this content disappear. The late 90s and early aughts had a few hours spent playing 3D mini golf, some tank combat games, and so forth. There was a time when both Director and Flash were on my list of things to download the day of a Windows reinstall. (In fact, it used to be Shockwave before Flash!) It’s better now that all of that is integrated into the browser, despite the occasional person who tries to convince me that the web should be for nothing more than documents. Little apps that can run anywhere is a powerful concept.
Have any Shockwave Director memories? Let us know in the comments!

I have not installed/used
I have not installed/used Flash Player or Shockwave player for a few years now and I do not miss it one little bit. Most of the time that I encounter a security flag on a website is the usual drive by adobe flash player/flash player plugin install redirects but my virus/firewall software is prettry good at blocking that nonsense.
Just too many security issues in Adobe Flash, Adobe AIR, and Shockwave which I have removed, even if one of my laptop’s interactive user manual requires Adobe AIR and ditto for my Wacom Bamboo Tablet’s bloatware and Adobe Air.
Adobe needed little apps that can run anyware in a secure manner but that appears to be beyond Adobe’s ability and it’s really too bad but HTML5 apears to be the future, if the browser makers can just get their respective products all working properly to support the web standards.
And it’s not that Adobe’s products are the only products with security issues it’s just that Adobe has so many and add that to the others and that’s just too much pain to worry about maintaining what with the windows OS/IE sorts of patching that also has to be done.
I’d like to see some Edge Browser that uses chromium BETA that’s windows 7 compatable being released also and maybe that can be supported after 2020 even though Windows 7’s EOL, for most folks, is 2020. Those Enterprise/Volume licensing clients that can pay for extended Windows 7 security patches until 2023 means that MS has to probably try and backport Edge/Chromium for windows 7, 8.1 also, if MS wants to get rid of IE and all that baggage to deal with and just maintain one browser codebase(Edge/Chromium) after 2020.
A small part of my business
A small part of my business was building Shockwave 3D apps in Director back in the day.
One client was still using my product configurator on their website until just a couple years ago.
Lingo… Ahh the memories.
We are in such a better place now with modern, natively supported technologies.
Did Joecartoon start on
