If you have been hitting cancel on that pop up inviting you to try the latest version of Skype every time you launch it then there is a bit of bad news. You have about a month and a half before you either finally accept the upgrade or stop using Skype as Microsoft have announced that after September 1st only Skype 8.xx will be able to connect to their network. The new design leaves something to be desired and this may mean the final end to a variety of features and workarounds many users have depended on in previous versions of Skype. It could even manage to make setting up the podcast even harder; tune in tonight as we test it out.
"We are encouraging everyone to upgrade now to avoid any inconvenience as only Skype version 8.0 will work after September 1, 2018. As we roll out improvements, there comes a time when we must shut down older services and application versions."

That’s crazy, the new version
That’s crazy, the new version does not have automatic call answering, this makes it difficult for me to reach my grandparents.
They force me to go with Amazon Echo Show/Spot.
I dropped skype recently, it
I dropped skype recently, it became just too awful to use.
Yea I have to use Skype for
Yea I have to use Skype for my suppliers and I hate the newer versions they look so fugly and it looks like they were made for mobile devices which sucks because I using it on Windows.
Whats up with MS and them making everything mandatory now days. Last time I looked I not only paid for my Windows but I also paid for the hardware it runs on. I guess if MS feels this way they better start sending out cheques to pay every rent for the use of our hardware.
Wait until 2020/later when
Wait until 2020/later when the real locking down starts and those monthly payment better be on time or your OS will revert to an S(S_IT) version without any real functionality to be of use.
Redmond wants to become a service providor with your PC/Laptop hardware becoming a locked down cable/router like apparatus that’s beyond your control!
Yea if they do go that route
Yea if they do go that route and it could very well happen it is a good thing there are a lot Windows versions to choose from that will work for most every body’s basic needs. Heck even if MS tried to block software from running on the older platforms I am sure that because MS choose to go with Windows as a monthly/yearly subscription that it would bring pretty much all the hackers out to bypass their crap. Then again there are other OS’s to use as well such as one of the many Linux Os’s versions out there already. MS would shoot themselves in the foot if they decided to go subscription and pretty much lose a huge amount of market share only the foolish would stay on a pay as you go platform the rest would find ways around their greed or just switch to another OS like Linux.
That being said if Linux finally got enough people on it to make their market share grow you can bet your bottom dollar that software would be ported over to it in short order. Just because MS thinks they own the market does not actually make it so at the end of the day we have the say whether they make it or not. If we turn away from their OS to go else where they will either change their ways or go bye bye and someone else takes over the market. My fear is that it would be Apple that does it which would be just as bad or worse.
Apple only has their
Apple only has their OS/Closed ecosystem on their Apple Branded hardware but M$ has mostly done its OS as a product for the third party OEM PC/Laptop market up until windows 7 was no longer the latest M$ OS.
Now since windows 8(Gag and Puke) M$ also has its own branded Tablets/2 in ones that M$ does lock down more than any third party OEM PCs/Laptop since windows 8/8.1 became M$’s latest OS. M$’s windows 10 is full on going to be completing what M$ started with windows 8/8.1 with the locking down and the monetizing the of OS/Software ecosystem as a service.
Now after 2020 Windows 7 will do fine without security updates running locked down safely inside a Linux Kernel based Hypervisor managed Instance and not allowed to be changed and only indirectly connected to the internet. If you are Running the Linux Kernel based Xen/KVM Hypervisor/VM software then a windows 7 OS Image could be spun up running under the Hypervisor from a clean/unmodifiable windows 7 image when needed and that’s how some enterprises and individuals are still running Windows XP and any applications that will not run on newer OSs.
There are plenty of cores for running VMs now that AMD has increased the mainstream PC core count to 8 cores and that’s probably going up higher once the Zen 2 based Ryzens are to market. For those HEDT users there is Threadripper offering from 8, 12, and 16 cores and 4 memory channels for plenty of good VM OS Instances running at the same time if needed by some. And TR2 is on the way with up to 32 cores on the HEDT market and Windows 7 running under a Linux Kernel based Hypervisor Managed OS instance and many other Linux Distros at the same time. TR2 is going to be great for running a Linux Based Hypervisor and many OS Instances as once on those 32 core TR2 variants.
Remember Apple can be avoided by using a Windows 7/Linux OS based PC/Laptop made by a Third party OEM. M$’s latest OS windows 10 can also be avoided as many are doing now by staying on windows 7 and even after 2020 some may take their windows 8/8.1 Pro license that had down grade rights to windows 7 Pro and reinstall 8.1(8 is no longer supported) unded that 8/8.1 Pro license and last until 2023 with some third party software to make 8.1 look like 7. But the Linux Kernel based Hypervisor option is there for running windows 7 after 2020 also.
Really Apple is not trying to force its closed OS/Software ecosystem onto any Independent third party PC/Laptop OEMs as Apple does not provide an OS on systems that it does not directly Make and Brand as Apple hardware. M$ is the more egregious violator of the third party OEM made PC/Laptop owners’ hardware with M$ moving towards making users’ PC/Laptop hardware that they purchased become M$’s hardware via that Windows 10 OS/UWP ecosystem that will become a prison after 2020. You will all be a UWPs and all of you will like it according to the Lords Of Redmond, and that UWP stands for Universal Windows Pesant.
Wait until you meet Skype For
Wait until you meet Skype For Business or MS Teams … wait, I take that back; it is just too mean.
It’s that good old M$(TM)
It’s that good old M$(TM) Embrace Extend Extinguish as Skype goes down the crapper. M$ really Knows how to burn any phone like platforms the same way that they burned the Nokia Phone platform, be it voice or video based. And Skype is getting the Redmond treatment where the crapper is the only end result!
The Evil Forcing is Strong From the ones from Redmond.
P.S. and how ’bout that July 2018 Patch Tuesday borking of many things. Do the folks in Redmond enjoy stress testing their guinea pigs(all of us)!
You can install the desktop
You can install the desktop version of Skype 8 on Windows 10 and skip the horrible Windows Store version by downloading the desktop installer at https://www.skype.com/en/get-skype/ After downloading right-click the installer and select properties, then the compatibility tab, then set compatibility mode to Windows 8. Hit ok, then run the installer. After all is said and done, you should have Skype Desktop 8 installed.
This worked for me. I needed to use the desktop version as the store version does not support virtual camera devices. Did this months ago and there have been no issues. It upgrades itself and works as expected. I use it several times a week.
Hope this helps anyone who needs it.

I think you misunderstood the
I think you misunderstood the point. they will be making the actual network incompatible with any version of the software that is not their chosen standard version. you can get the old software anywhere, but it ain’t gonna work.
No he’s correctly stating
No he’s correctly stating that there are two different versions of Skype 8 – UWP and a desktop client. He’s saying you can avoid the UWP application if you so desire.
