The model of MSI's GP62 7REX Leopard Pro gaming laptop which The Tech Report reviewed sells for $1300, middle of the road for a gaming laptop. The 4GB GTX 1050 Ti will be able to drive the built in 1080p display though it may struggle at higher graphic settings on an external monitor with a higher resolution. The overall design was favourably received, the SteelSeries keyboard is a nice touch and the laptop keeps itself cool without creating a lot of noise. The battery life disappointed The Tech Report, but in most cases this laptop will be plugged in so this is not as bad as it would be on an ultraportable.

The 8 core 16 thread Ryzen ASUS laptop SKU with an RX 580 is running $1499 at MC and other stores and I’ll wait a while and see if it goes on sale. I love that there will be now some AMD Ryzen competition and I’m never one to buy the leading edge SKUs as I’ll wait for the SKUs to get at least one year old and/or be replaced by some newer model. So those gaming laptops that are 1+ year old can be had at MC sometime for less than a Grand and plenty of power.
So Now that AMD’s desktop SKUs are comping inside laptops, Thanks ASUS, maybe there will be desktop Raven Rdige APUs inside some gaming laptops and both the APU’s and Discrete Graphics will be much better on average than that Intel Dogfood that the OEM Laptop market has been force fed for so many years. If this current generation of Ryzen/Raven Ridge SKUs gets replaced in Q1-Q2 of 2018 then that means there will be some very good deals come T-Day/XMAS 2018 for sure.
I’ll bet that there will be many Zen/Zeppelin dies produced and that 6/12 core/thread Ryzen laptops as well as 8/16 core/thread Ryzen laptop SKUs will be available and then there will be the desktop Raven Ridge APUs at 65 Watts also for some laptop as a desktop replacement usage(ASUS are you listening) offerings in 2018. I’m sure that some desktop Raven Ridge APU based gaming Laptop will be coning with discrete mobile Radeon GPUs also as an option so maybe Integrated Vega paired with some Discrete Mobile Vega ro even some Zen/Vega/HBM2 offering with more than 11 Vega nCU is in development, who knows but its good to see some Ryzen/Raven Ridge power in laptops with more coming in 2018 at 35-65+ Watts.
