On a more technical note has any tester with a Radeon Vega Founders Edition tested that SKU with say most of the HBM2 disabled, or with the HBM2 filled up to the max with textures, to test Vega’s HBCC/HBC and how efficiently it manages moving textures to and from regular system memory or even paged memory into the card’s HBM2 VRAM. What about some benchmarks designed to stress test a GPU’s memory controller/memory subsystems.
The Vega Micro-Arch is supposed to have all this large virtual address space management ability and HBCC/HBC to manage large texture pools that are larger than available HBM2/VRAM. So what about some testing for that ability.
I think that AMD, on one of their eariler RX Vega demos, disabled in the firmware some of RX Vega’s HBM2 memory and gamed with a smaller amount of HBM2/VRAM available with little reduced performance because of this HBCC/HBC/HBM2 IP that is new to the Vega micro-arch. All this new Vega HBCC/HBC technology/IP has some implications for future mobile Vega Micro-arch based SKUs on laptops that may not have more than 4GB of video memory available.
Does this Radeon Vega founders edition even have the ability via the drivers/OS to manage it’s own memory paging file swap space for textures/etc into say system RAM or SSD/Hard drive, or will that be limited to any Radeon Vega WX SKUs with their own on PCIe card SSD.
AMD still has not discussed its HBCC/HBC subsystems in great detail but hopefully this can be tested by someone using the Radeon Vega Founders Edition and some of the developers tools that are supposed to be available for any Radeon Vega FE owners/developers.
Send Josh Walrath to Budapest
Send Josh Walrath to Budapest Hungary to sample RX Vega and the many fine regonal beers at Budapest’s Craft Beer District.
“AMD will be taking RX Vega for a tour. The first community tour will take place in Budapest, Hungary on July 18. Then two days later RX Vega will be shown in action at PDXLAN in Portland, USA. The third and final event will take place at SIGGRAPH, so right where RX Vega will be unveiled.”(1)
“Here’s a full schedule:
◾Budapest, Hungary July 18 at the Akvárium Klub from 2 to 7 CET.
◾Portland, USA, PDXLAN in, July 21 to 23
