Bad news upgraders, neither AMD nor Intel will be launching their new CPUs until the beginning of next year. Both AMD's Zen and Intel's Kaby Lake have now been delayed instead of launching in Q4 and Q3 of this year respectively. DigiTimes did not delve into the reasons behind the delay in AMD's 14nm GLOBALFOUNDRIES (and Samsung) sourced Zen but unfortunately the reasons beind Intel's delay are all too clear. With large stockpiles of Skylake and Haswell processors and systems based around them sitting in the channel, AMD's delay creates an opportunity for Intel and retailers to move that stock. Once Kaby Lake arrives the systems will no longer be attractive to consumers and the prices will plummet.
Here is to hoping AMD's delay does not imply anything serious, though the lack of a new product release at a time which traditionally sees sales increase is certainly going to hurt their bottom line for 2016.
"With the delays, the PC supply chain will not be able to begin mass production for the next-generation products until November or December and PC demand is also unlikely to pick up until the first quarter of 2017."

Okay, from the article it
Okay, from the article it says,
“AMD’s Zen architecture is produced by Globalfoundries’ 14nm process and chipsets are designed by Taiwan-based players. However, the platform is also expected to be delayed until January 2017.”
But AMD is also getting wafers from Samsung’s own fabs?
I’m also not sure where this site is sourcing their information from…
Because if the 8c/16t zen chip really is delayed ’til ’17 then I’m just going to bite the bullet and get the 8-core broadwell-E.
As far as I know, Global
As far as I know, Global Foundries14 nm process is licensed from Samsung, but AMD chips will produced at Global Foundriez.
GloFo did indeed license
GloFo did indeed license Samsung’s 14nmFF process, but as far as I am aware AMD is contracting both GloFo and Samsung fabs for 14nmFF.
They are both using the same
They are both using the same process tech, so essentially interchangable. This could be very good for supplies as both are looking at very full capacity.
This is when AMD needs to do
This is when AMD needs to do a full on paper launch and be 100% up front that with specs and performance numbers to start building the hype train and dissuade potential Intel buyers from settling on just getting a skylake system.
the only slightly good potential for people is that come next spring , there should be new top end GPUs from Nvidia and AMD to pair with the new Intel or AMD cpus.
As it stands now , there is a lot of pent up demand for AMD to put out ZEN for people hoping to build a budget gaming system and for ZEN’s release to make Intel compete more on pricing.
Either way , this is bad news , waiting until Q3 was already a very long time for potential AMD buyers. Now I don’t think many of them will feel the same about waiting until 2017 unless AMD puts out some pricing and performance numbers but a paper launch would at least get the info out there.
As much as I love AMD, I
As much as I love AMD, I think people shouldn’t build hope in Zen being competitive with Intel’s latest and greatest, like we all did with Bulldozer.
Even though “CPU-superman” (Jim Keller) worked on Zen, we shouldn’t kid ourselves that AMD’s engineers can outdo Intel’s countless CPU gurus sitting all over the world on better pay scales.
I would be pleasantly surprised if Zen comes close to Intel’s Haswell in single-threaded performance, let alone Skylake!
Nonetheless, if the performance is anywhere near Haswell and especially if they have good TDP’s (power efficient), I will wait and buy. After-all, it’s not the CPU which is a bottleneck in modern computers, it’s still IO (hard drives), even with SSD’s.
In spite of inputs/outputs in
In spite of inputs/outputs in general (including networks) are the slowest part of the PC architecture, the computing power is still relying on the processor which improves the speed of I/O by compressing data. Cutting-edge compression algorithms still need computing power to be popular, specially for real time encoding.
I think, i saw official
I think, i saw official Statements not long ago about Zen…

Perhaps you guys can do a CPU
Perhaps you guys can do a CPU round-up again to see if people actually need to upgrade. I suspect an Intel quad core 2xxx CPU and above will still work fine for most games, except strategy games and maybe a few other special cases. DX12 may make the CPU even less performance critical, but the game needs to be developed for DX12 from the start. I don’t know how many of those we have yet.
Maybe by jan 2017 the list of
Maybe by jan 2017 the list of games I want to play but am waiting on a processor upgrade for will be higher than one. Maybe.
i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz 24/7/365
i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz 24/7/365 pretty much all the way since mid-2011. You amuse me with that FUD article of yours, Jeremy. And I’ll be laughing exceptionally hard at each and every person who actually in all seriousness deliberately coughs up those 1700$ for a 6950X nowadays. Hilarious.
I’m still waiting for Zen so
I’m still waiting for Zen so ya i will be upgrading to Zen next spring. 🙂
Dear AMD,
Please get your
Dear AMD,
Please get your act together for the consumer’s sake. Intel is acting a fool because you’re out of the game. Chipzilla needs to be stopped before it tramples the home PC market.
Regards,
A concerned consumer
P.S.: I really wish Samsung would fab your chips directly instead of Global Foundries. GF is killing you.
Do you expect arab
Do you expect arab shareholders from Qatar to pay Global Foundries employees to drink chocolates and coffees?
Actually AMD is still the main client of Global Foundries and their foundries sucks so much that they have to license Samsung’s 14 nm process to stay in the race.
Global Foundries should have been sold or merged for a long time ago to be competitive and free AMD from its main weakness.
I’m expecting soon AMD will be sold to China thanks to the double agent Lisa Su if no american or european consortium would make an offer to dismantle AMD before the bankruptcy.
Really why does gaming have
Really why does gaming have such an egregious Redneck problem! AMD will not be sold to China, and GF using Samsung’s 14nm process is a good thing for the overall availability of 14nm process capacity! Google will be getting its Power9 server SKUs using that 14nm Samsung process, and Google can source the fab capacity for its Power9s from both Samsung and Global-Foundries.
IBM, Samsung, and Global-Foundries have been in a chip fab IP/technology cross licensing partnership for some years now, and IBM is out of the commercial scale foundry business with Global-Foundries supplying IBM’s Power8/Power9 needs while both Global-Foundries and Samsung will be able to supply the many third party OpenPower Power8/power9 licensees with their own supplies of Power8/Power9 licensed IP server SKUs! Google if free to choose Samsung or Global-Foundries for its Licensed Power9 fabrication needs, and keep Intel outside of Google’s server farms while giving Nvidia some more GPU accelerator business.
Anyone who really thinks that the DigiTimes artical needs some corroboration knows that that article is mostly clickbait, and really Gaming has the most serious Redneck issues, what with all the xenophobia expressed in the posts on most gamig websites!
Didn’t Intel recently lay off
Didn’t Intel recently lay off a ton of people? Wouldn’t moving their fabs forward and dropping prices on old stock make more sense than sitting on their thumbs?
Not when there are plenty of
Not when there are plenty of Intel’s older stocks of SKUs to be milked to the end for high margins, that is until AMD’s Zen hits the market in quantities big enough to make Intel lower its pricing. Intel is laying off folks to get leaner because Intel is going to have Zen x86 HPC/workstation/server interposer based APUs with an on the interposer module Vega GPU accelerator to compete with come 2017, and Google getting an OpenPower Power9 license and rolling some Power9 server SKUs of its own does not help Intel in the least come 2017 and beyond!
Intel is getting in that last year and a half of good old high margins before it will have to compete across all the major markets, and Intel has been kept outside of the mobile market and has given up on the Phone SOC market. That mobile market contra revenue cash pit drained away some billions and now Intel has to milk like mad for its last gasp before more some real competition makes those CPU/SOC market sky high margins just a dusty memory of days gone by.
Intel is definitely outside of most of the mobile market’s SKUs and is going to find itself outside of more the server market players’ kit come Google’s/others Power9 usage, and AMD’s HPC/server/workstation APU on an interposer SKUs for more affordable server room options. Look for more shrinkage in Intel’s job ranks through early buyouts and forced redundancies, as the market shifts Intel to the outside with its high margin Cash Cow slowly cooking up to a golden brown in that face of more competition.
“DigiTimes did not delve into
“DigiTimes did not delve into the reasons”
And the REAL reason is: Clicks for dollars from DigiTimes!
AMD’s CEO has stated the availability for the Zen(8 core desktop SKU), at trade shows, in conference calls, and at financial briefings, so the SEC would be very interested in this if it where true. So I’d expect that AMD would be notifying the press shortly if it where true. I think that Zen(8 core desktop SKU) will be available in limited amounts for its stated market availability dates, with a much better supply chain availability come 2017, as has been stated all along by AMD. So those Zen 8 core SKUs will be there on time but at limited availability, and the Zen APUs are not scheduled in the first place until 2017. DigiTimes is walking a fine line with their lies of omission on this clicking for dollars headline!
As already mentioned, this
As already mentioned, this would be bad for both sides of the coin. Intel will continue to gouge PC users until AMD will release its competition.
And since AMD’s CEO has already stated availability, then such change would have to be confirmed by AMD.
If confirmed, this is horrible. But even with delay of ZEN, they should at least release the platform now with the Excavator APU’s. Would allow AMD fans to start funding AMD a bit with a platform switch, and have sockets ready for ZEN when they do come out.
For myself, new AMD platform is a must. M.2, PICe3, DDR4. Also Excavator over Piledriver core would also be a nice boost.
Would be also interesting to see some comparisons from PCPer. FM2 socket has all the Cores available (does it not?) It sure has Steamroler and Excavator (Athlon 845), but unsure about Piledriver. So clock to clock comparison is already available on the same platform. (granted without L3 cache) But it sure would be nice to see any new articles on AMD these days.
The only good part of the potential detail is it means I just keep saving my money so I’ll have more to spend later
My 2500K @ 4.7Ghz is *STILL*
My 2500K @ 4.7Ghz is *STILL* perfectly fine in 99% of the scenarios *I* use it for: I do 1680X1050 gaming, my videos/movies are all 720p x264 so editing/conversion is still as fast as it was day 1!
Also, no Windows 10, NSA approved “spy edition” for me, thank you very much. Windows 7 is the end of the road for me and my relationship with M$. DX12 and UWP is dead to me, so Vulkan will have to do.
I don’t use a single application that take advantage of either AVX or even SSE4.2! In fact the only one I’m ware of using AVX is Handbrake. Many aspect of computing are STILL single threaded and the 2500K, especially at over 4.5Ghz, is still more than adequate in that respect.
I don’t plan to upgrade until my rig is completely obsolete and I feel the pain/restriction using it. At this rate, that won’t happen for another decade… I will probably upgrade to a 3770K and 32GB of DDR3-2400 before considering replacing the whole thing as my ASRock Z68 is GEN3 (PCIe 3) ready. This way I get Hyper-threading, 5-6% better IPC, 2MB more L3 cache, double my current 16GB RAM setup + get a boost from 1600Mhz to 2400Mhz.
The days of 100% better performance within a couple of months is long gone. No more 486 DX-33 swap for a DX4-100! There is no incentive/justification to upgrade that quickly anymore.
I hear what you’re saying,
I hear what you’re saying, but I just finished upgrading from an i7-2600k@4.8Ghz to an i7-6700k@4.7ghz. GTAV in particular runs significantly smoother and my CPU now runs at around 60c instead of 75c under full load – with the same cooling system (Corsair H80i v2). The whole system is now whisper quiet as a result. I can now run an NVMe drive, and I have native USB 3.0/3.1 and Thunderbolt.
This having been said, my old system did OK too. You’re right about one thing for sure, though: The days of big improvements like when we got Sandy Bridge seem to be gone.
I can’t figure out if it’s due to the lack of competition from AMD, or just bumping up against fundamental laws of physics. Maybe both.
Indeed. And don’t count on
Indeed. And don’t count on so-called “developers” to get efficient softwares since 90 % of them are laborer 2.0 only able to copy/paste code found or begged online. That’s why the software industry is outsourcing to Asia. Without high level languages and ready to eat API or framework, most of them would be mendicants.
I don’t care aboit Zen. I
I don’t care aboit Zen. I just want AM4 now.
My 4790K feels slower than the A10 7850K I upgraded from. At least the overLl smoothness was better on the A10. I hate this Haswell chip.
I need Brisol Lake ASAP.
Not sure by what you mean by
Not sure by what you mean by “overLI smoothness”…
and I’m not sure what you’re smoking 😉
But the i7-4790k rips apart the A10-7850k in every test…
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1200?vs=1260
Another set of comparative benchmarks: –
http://www.cpu-world.com/benchmarks/browse/2632_105,1161_104/?c_test=80
The i7-4790k is over 2 times faster in every test case.
Unless you rely heavily on integrated graphics?
I know that the 4790K rips
I know that the 4790K rips the 7850K in TESTS.
That does not change the fact that the A10 feels just as smooth in 99% of all tasks.
What a bummer. I was waiting
What a bummer. I was waiting for Kaby Lake so I could build a new system with Optane tech, but oh well. Now I almost just want to wait until end of 2017 for Cannonlake.
Shouldn’t the pic say “good
Shouldn’t the pic say “good news everyone”?
