The Register is not exaggerating in the quote below, the new Microsoft Surface Book ranges from $1500-$3200 depending on the model you chose, passing even the overpriced Chromebook Pixel by quite a sum of money. For that price you get a 3200×2000 (267ppi) 13.5" display on a tablet which weighs 3.34lbs (1.5kg), the detachable keyboard with an optional Nvidia GPU and an extra battery as well as a Surface pen. If you want the dock which adds more connectivity options, well that is another $200 and seeing as how there is only two USB3.0 ports, a single MiniDP and an SD card reader on the keyboard you are likely to want it.
Certainly The Register liked the looks, design and power of this ultrabook but with the competition, up to and including Apple, offering similar products at half the price it is a hard sell in the end. Ryan expressed a similar opinion when he reveiwed the Surface Book.
"Sumptuous and slightly absurd, Microsoft's Surface Book is the most expensive laptop you can get, short of ordering a 24-carat custom gold plated jobbie."

The cheapest macbook pro with
The cheapest macbook pro with a discrete gpu is like 2.8 grand, how is that comparable?
The cheapest 15 inch macbook pro is also 2.2 grand, it comes with 256 GB of flash, 16 GB of ram.
They’re kinda wrong with their pricing comparison.
That doesn’t make the SB a great value buy for an average person, or even some enterprise/prosumers, but I find this pricing critique to be a bit disingenuous.
Seriously what in the fuck.
Seriously what in the fuck. This bullshit peasantry, or pro-apple shit needs to stop. I earn 100k min. A year, I don’t give a fuck about a $3000 product that’s I use the shit out of for a year or two. And I’m not alone here. I’ve sold so many of these already. Yet, all pcper is doing is bitching about price, as they have done on almost every damn article I have read in the last few months about a premium product.
GUESS WHAT, THATS WHY ITS A PREMOUM PRODUCT. With twice as many features as an. Apple product.
Hell NO! The SOC in this
Hell NO! The SOC in this thing does not have much processing power, it’s running windows 10, and Ultrabook and thin and lights are not good for any real work! M$ has gone all Apple to the Nth power with their moving to a closed ecosystem and high pricing. So it’s Just that Intel has been forcing an Apple influnced Ultrabook mentality onto the entire laptop market for a few years now, and between Intel, Apple, and M$ the laptop as a device for work has suffered. This picing is way above the BOM, and a workstation laptop could be had for that price. I refuse to consider Ultrabooks and the Surface tablet as a full laptop in the True definition of what a laptop should provide! The surface is a way overpriced tablet and nothing more. Apple’s tablets are pricy but this surface pricing is excessive.
What the market needs are some full Linux based Tablet SKUs, but Google has used its influnce the same as M$ and Intel to Gimp things down and force their Useless App store close ecosystem model on everyone!
People are better off just getting some of the ramaing stock of older year’s model Intel Laptops that are still on sale at the retailers for a much better computing experience. There are some great deals on some quad core i7 Ivybridge/Haswell laptops out there that have much better processing power, and the older i5/i3 based laptops with the non Ultrabook SOCs can be had for the prices in the 300-500 dollar range.
Youd have to be very ignorant
Youd have to be very ignorant to buy either an Apple or this overpriced junk.
Im all for expensive nice things. I just dont like overpriced cheap shit like Apple or Microsoft’s “hardware” which is usually Foxconn trash.
Premium my ass lol.
When you poke a surface book,
When you poke a surface book, it goes boioioioioioioioing.
Apple has been flogging
Apple has been flogging overpriced hardware for years, and yet they (of course) get a free pass about it. It’s amazing how biased the US tech scene is.
At least the likes of Micrsoft, Google, and even Amazon are doing exciting things in tech and taking risks. Same can’t be said for Apple who have been treading water with basically the same products for years.
For real. This is bullshit.
For real. This is bullshit.
No M$ is the Bullshit, and is
No M$ is the Bullshit, and is joining Google and Apple in the overpriced dung bin! Enjoy your overpriced appliances, computing devices have been reduced to portable BOOB TUBES!
You are a UWP(Universal Windows Peasant) the same goes for Google and the rest, your overpriced “computing” devices are little more than TVs replete with the ad driven madness that goes along with that TV style idiot BOX mentality!
JESUS, we get it Jeremy,
JESUS, we get it Jeremy, youre a fucking PEASANT. The Surface Book is worth every single cent to a lot of us, and as I’ve sold dozens of them already, to many SMB Clients, it’s obvious AF not everyone shares your cheap ass opinion. It’s sad that I can’t read many of your writings, simy because you are SO CHEAP.
PLEASE STOP BEING SO FUCKING POOR JEREMY.
Ballmer, is that you! Mad
Ballmer, is that you! Mad about your M$ shares, go fling some executive chairs!
Stop the Ultrabook/Thin and Light OVERPRICED madness, windows 10 sucks your personal data and sells it to any and all for a price! Stop the gimping now!

Would they be happy to send it to me with Linux instead? Such specs needs a serious OS to go with it, not some silly tile manager.

I’m not terribly wealthy, but
I’m not terribly wealthy, but I consider my Surface Book a terrific investment. I’m astonished by how much I’m able to do with it, running Maya, Unreal Engine 4, and Photoshop simultaneously with a measly 8GB. I skipped with Surface Dock, because it has poor ratings, and just got a MiniDP to VGA/DVI/HDMI adapter, and a USB 3.0 hub with integrated ethernet. Upgrading the storage wasn’t cheap, because I had to get a slim microSD adapter to fit flush with the side of the case, and that limited me to 200GB of extra storage. The thing is really limited as a tablet when detached from the keyboard, but overall, I’m extremely satisfied with the thing.
I’m confused. A Surface Book
I’m confused. A Surface Book with a better graphics card, an included pen, all of the tablet functionality, and better battery life is only $200 more than the comparable [and highest end you can get] Macbook Pro. Why does everyone keep saying it’s overpriced compared to the competition?
