The second Insider release on the “Redstone” branch has been pushed to Fast ring users. Once again, this has basically no release notes because a lot of features are “under the hood.” The push with Windows 10 since just before the holidays is to create a sensible structure for various teams to target with their changes. You could imagine how difficult this gets when you're dealing with phones, IoT, tablets and convertibles, HoloLens, and high-performance workstations, across a few different architectures.
Insiders who are interested in UX updates and other features will probably be best to switch to “Slow” for a handful of builds once they find one that's stable for them. I can't really see this being useful for most Insiders, because unlike open-source previews where you can contribute to (or develop software alongside of) the internal tweaks, all you really can do is report when something is broken or acting funny. If that's what you want, then it's great that Microsoft is providing these previews.
Thanks to M$’s windows 8/8.1,
Thanks to M$’s windows 8/8.1, and now 10 combined with OEM’s/Intel’s Ultrabook obsession PC/laptop sales are heading down the crapper(1)! Thanks for all the Gimped down Thin and Light FX8800P laptops running at a gimped down 15 watts by the OEMs, to go along with a windows 10 OS that will never be installed by many even though M$ is giving that spyware OS away for free! Thanks for the Ultrabook madness Intel, so that the entire OEM supply chain for laptop cases is nothing but gimped down Ultrabook/Thin and light designs with gimped down cooling solutions. I’ll never have that Y700 gaming laptop with the Fx8800P if I can not get it running a Linux distro, or even, rising vomit in my throat, windows 8.1 pro to downgrade to windows 7 pro.
Windows 10 is not as popular as windows 7, and M$ can not even get people to adopt windows 10 for free at a faster pace than people took up windows 7 at full cost! Even most of the older model laptops at Microcenter have all had their 8.1 versions re-imaged with windows 10, and that is hurting sales of the formally windows 8.1 devices that people would by to downgrade to windows 7. The PC market is going down, and OEMs better get some Linux OS options to at least get some business from those who will never have that 10 out of 10 in the crap category windows spyware 10 OS on their new PC/Laptop hardware!

I think this bit from the article you cite really undermines the credibility of the rest of the piece: “Throughout all of this SemiAccurate has been consistent in its analysis, and that analysis is one all the players involved unquestionably know, modern PCs are awful. Windows 8+, yes 10 included, are awful. They don’t work well. The cheap ones are miserable and die in months, the expensive ones have ‘features’ that make them less functional, heavier, and worse in every way but possibly looks. Intel artificially cripples CPUs at the low-end and prices them painfully on the high-end. Modern PCs are borderline unusable, unsecurable, user unfriendly, and quantifiably worse in almost every way for the user experience than a 5 year old device.”
No S/A is SPOT ON with its
No S/A is SPOT ON with its conclusions!
Intel used its market influence over the laptop OEMs to push its Ultrabook initiative and force an Apple style gimped and overpriced laptop hardware model on the entire laptop industry. laptops had been replacing the PC as the home computing markets main computing device, a laptop SOC market that Intel dominated, unlike the tablet/phone market which uses Arm based SOCs! Intel’s failed Ultrabook initiative has had repercussions in the laptop OEM’s supply chain with all the laptops OEM’s non SOC laptop parts suppliers switching to making Ultrabook/Thin and Light laptops parts like laptop cases, and cooling solutions that were made for Intel’s Ultrabook SKUs. The entire laptop market at Intel’s instigation has switched to the under performing Ultrabook/Thin and light SKUs that are NOT as powerful processing wise as the regular form factor laptops of the pre-Ultrabook generations that have more powerful SKUs with more robust cooling solutions.
Intel, and M$ have both had an unnatural influence over the PC/Laptop market, and by definition the home computing market for decades, not including the Mobile Tablet/Phone market that has had a much more natural relationship in the supply chain for SOC/OS parts supplied to the Mobile Tablet/Phone OEMs. It is this unnatural supply chain relationship by 2 monopolistic suppliers of SOC/OS parts over the PC laptop OEMs that has lead to the PC/Laptop market shrinking that we see today, that and the rise of the more fairly competitive and more innovative mobile Phone/Tablet market that has the OEM’s in control over their entire supply chain of SOC/OS/Other parts. The lack of competition in the PC/laptop market for OEM SOC/OS parts has lead to a supplier of OEM SOC parts having an unnatural domination over that market’s PC/Laptop OEMs, Ditto for M$ over the same market of the OEM’s OS part.
Intel’s failed Ultrabook initiative has had a negative influence on the Laptop market, Intel ignoring the desktop SOC/CPU PC market in favor of the mobile market SOCs has lead to a likewise negative influence on that market, in addition to the movement towards mobile laptop/other devices that where taking sales from the desktop PC market. Those older model regular form factor laptops have more processing power than the underpowered Ultrabooks at a much more affordable price than the overpriced Ultrabooks provide. Laptops of 3 years ago are thin and light enough and have better processing capabilities than most of the newer Ultrabooks SOC SKUs, so consumers are smart to go and purchase one of the older model laptops that remain in the retailer’s inventories, new and on sale, rather that purchasing one of those gimped down Ultrabook/thin and light abominations! M$’s OSs after windows 7, have turned people off to new purchases with most wanting nothing more than windows 7 and the under the hood improvements without the TIFKAM nonsense of windows 8/8.1 and the spying and lack of users’ control over their own PC/Laptop hardware with windows 10! PC/Laptop users want their privacy and the option of not being forced into the cloud/subscription OS model.
I am running Manjaro Cinnamon
I am running Manjaro Cinnamon 15.12 and Manjaro Deepin 15.12
with kernel 4.4.0-1-MANJARO. Both distros are rock solid. No issues like “your PC ran into trouble and needs to restart…”.
No anti-virus or no disk scanning nonsense. It is about time that people should start using Linux and find-out themselves if Linux is the right OS for them.
Linux is now ready for the desktop. Linux will provide much better user experience than Windows 7/8.1/10.
I do not game so DX11/DX12 are meaningless to me.
What happens if the
What happens if the popularity Oculus Rift VR takes off and becomes addictive like the IPhone. Since it requires a high end PC for the Video horsepower, wouldn’t the PC industry follow as well…?
AMD better make sure its
AMD better make sure its Bristol Ridge, and Zen based APUs can run Linux, and I am not too happy about M$ only allowing windows 10 on any new devices that run Skylake from Intel or Bristol Ridge from AMD, and no windows 7, or 8.1. The OEM’s are about to get hit with lawsuits to force them to provide Linux compatible drivers because this M$ forcing of windows 10 is going to cause PC/Laptop sales to tank further! AMD you need to partner with one of the Linux based laptop OEMs to get them using/supporting your Bristol Ridge, and Zen based APUs, or those sales will continue to be lackluster.
I may have to give up on getting any AMD Bristol Ridge, or Zen based laptops if there are no Linux based OEMs using these AMD SKUs in their new laptop offerings!
M$ you are being watched closely so just you try locking other OS options out in OEM’s PC/laptop hardware. folks know that the OEM’s have the options of not providing a M$ windows secure boot OFF switch in new PC/Laptop hardware that comes with windows 10, the OEMs better have that OFF Switch provided in the OEM’s UEFI/BIOS or the lawsuits will come down like rain in a summer thunderstorm!

“Microsoft updates support policy: New CPUs will require Windows 10”

What happened to Microsoft
What happened to Microsoft Internet explorer? Microsoft Internet explorer is now being dis-continued. The same thing is going to happen to Microsoft Windows Operating System. In five years, Linux and Android are going to be the dominant operating systems.
People are ignorant. It is the OEMs (Dell, HP, Lennvo, Sony and the others) who are responsible for the Wintel duoploy.
In 2016, Linux could double its user base.
