Update 2 (11:50pm): Okay, so. Scott Wasson was asked by Raja Koduri to join the Radeon Technologies Group, their intention being to implement the work he did with (and surrounding) his frame time benchmark to improve user experience. Scott Wasson will step down as Editor-in-Chief of The Tech Report, and promote Jeff Kampman in his place.
Update: Scott Wasson has just published a blog post about it, naturally minutes after I wrote this. We'll add more details above this as we digest them. Original news below!
AMD has just announced that Scott Wasson, Editor-in-Chief at The Tech Report, will leave his site and join their ranks. Details are still scarce because of how fresh this announcement is, but he will join the company to lead User Experience. Scott Wasson is a good friend of PC Perspective and our Editor-in-Chief, Ryan Shrout. They shared notes during the development of Frame Rating.
Ryan is still visiting AMD for the scheduled briefing, and will probably be talking more about this over the next couple of days. Scott Wasson's new position at the chip designer will take effect in January. We don't yet know how this will affect The Tech Report itself, whether someone will take over or not. Ryan broke the news on our most recent podcast from the event.
Good for him. A very smart
Good for him. A very smart and intellectual man.
Yeah. Should be a good pickup
Yeah. Should be a good pickup for Team Red.
i wonder if Ryan would do the
i wonder if Ryan would do the same ?? hmm
Isn’t Ryan already working
Isn’t Ryan already working for nvidia? ;P
Yup, his job offer would
Yup, his job offer would DEFINITELY be green.

Although maybe it was taken from a review?
Scott small mix-up in the
Scott small mix-up in the update 2. Tech Report not Reprot. 🙂
wow so many questions so
wow so many questions so little time… ‘good pickup for team red’ sums it up nicely tho imo. congratulations, to all parties. dont be surprised to see the artic islands chips do some real damage next year. XD! join the team, but dont touch our review samples. hmm. thankfully there are things like ignorance to explain such rash conclusions. but still… hmm
Smart move on AMDs part.
Smart move on AMDs part.
I hope in AMD they listen to
I hope in AMD they listen to what he have to tell them and not try to explain to him how businesses are run because it will be a waste.
Nice move from AMD if they take advantage of his experience at Tech Report and what members of that site where telling him all this time. Just remembered Anand going to Apple.
PS One more EXTREMELY FUNNY thing I just remembered. Tech Report was one of the sites NOT getting a Nano because “reviews need to be fair”.

Poor poor Roy.
That article alone should
That article alone should have started an FTC investigation into the online technology press and the industries’ products the online press is supposed to be impartially reviewing. Playing favorites with review samples could be resolved by forcing the manufacturers to use a third party independently run review sample random lottery for the online websites that want review samples to benchmark.
But seeing how the technology industry is about as corrupt as the Auto Industry pre government regulations, and the auto industry still is to a degree, then the high technology computer/software industry has the politicians bought and paid for. It’s good that the PC heydays are over, and the industry could be well served in becoming a mature market with the more opportunistic players out of business and the quick and easy profits gone forever from the technology marketplace. The PC is not dead, it’s just the mad profits and growth rates that are gone from the mature computer technology market forever!
You could tell something was
You could tell something was afoot, there hadn’t been any Tech Report podcasts for almost 2 months.
Hopefully Scott will injected a little bit of honesty at AMD as they did seem to take the huff at Scott’s breakdown of their Nano benchmarks, pointing out they didn’t use 16x anisotropic filtering.
It must be difficult having
It must be difficult having friends and contacts in an industry who have the same passions but make a gazillion times more per year, so Scott’s move is understandable.
But for me Scott was The Tech Report as the dude is such a natural communicator/broadcaster, I very much doubt I’ll bother too much with the site in future.
Good night, sweet prince.
Good night, sweet prince.
No way!? TR is like Scott’s
No way!? TR is like Scott’s baby, sad to see him go.
On the other hand it’s nice seeing him move to AMD, I wish him all the best.
So Scott isn’t controlling
So Scott isn’t controlling content, but Tech Report will still be owned by an AMD employee???
First Anand went to Apple and
First Anand went to Apple and now Scott goes to AMD. Big changes afoot in the tech blog space. But good for them. These guys deserve it.
There goes more Technology
There goes more Technology reporters from the online websites, Anand Lal Shimpi went to Apple, and no more in depth CPU core architecture reports, does anyone have the more complete CPU core architecture information on any Apple custom ARM core since the thorough Apple A7 cyclone CPU core analysis done by Anand Lal Shimpi before he departed AnandTech. Here is Anand’s A7 cyclone core’s more thorough core analysis:
CPU Codename—————-Cyclone,
ARM ISA———————ARMv8-A(32/64),
Issue Width—————–6 micro-ops,
Reorder Buffer Size———192 micro-ops,
Branch Mispredict Penalty—16 cycles (14 – 19),
Integer ALUs—————-4,
Load/Store Units————2,
Load Latency—————-4 Cycles,
Branch Units—————-2,
Indirect Branch Units——-1,
FP/NEON ALUs—————-3,
L1 Cache-–——————64KB I$ + 64KB D$,
L2 Cache——————–1MB,
L3 Cache——————–4MB,
So what about the Apple A8/A8X, and A9/A9X CPU cores, has any core features been improved upon, no one knows, and mostly it’s just very superficial information on the Apple cores after Anand’s departure from AnandTech, even from Anand’s namesake only website that has a new owner. All we get are a few benchmarks, and some very low definition pictures/analysis from ChipWorks that are mostly very tentative in nature, with no in-depth CPU core analysis done. These so called CPU core analysis articles are little more than uneducated guesses, with very little real analysis, the real analysis being done is all behind a pay-wall now. Hopefully when AMD’s K12 comes to market AMD will have not gone all wacky with the silence and we’ll get the proper professional technology specifications on the K12’s custom ARM core from AMD. So from now on all we get for any new CPU core information is a few of the more inaccurate benchmarks, and bits and pieces of the actual CPU core resources.
There are new Custom ARMv8A ISA based cores coming online with way more in the way of CPU core execution resources than any of ARM holdings’ Reference design cores, but where is the proper CPU core analysis being done for the custom ARM market.
I can not help but feel as if
I can not help but feel as if he is giving over the helm of a spiffy cabin cruiser, to take up a high-paying position in the staff of the Titanic…
I wish him good fortune, nonetheless.
One thing is for sure Apple
One thing is for sure Apple has Anand Lal Shimpi sealed up tightly in Carbonite in a special room constructed under their yet to be completed spaceship headquarters! Wasson and/or partners has NOT sold of the TechReport to the same media interest that owns Tom’s Hardware, like Anand did! You can really see the drop in reporting quality at AnandTech post Anand’s departure! Wasson may have something to come back to if AMD fails!
I guess Ryan is next. Was
I guess Ryan is next. Was wondering why he brought Allyn to Kentucky. Or is it Kansas? Can never get that straight.
It’s a shame for all of us to
It’s a shame for all of us to lose another decent tech reporter. There are very few out there. First we lost Anand and now Scott. Sadly on PCPer is the only (western) one left on my list that is worth staying current with. Congratulations for him though. He’s put a lot of time in and it’s well past time for a career change and an exciting new direction for him. Now he doesn’t have to worry about CES anymore. That being said the TR had been souring since Cyril and Jordan left. Having their idiot reddit-esque voting system really turns their community into a bunch of slathering idiots. I’m so glad PCPer has avoided the circle jerking that results from being able to vote on someones comments (what a silly notion that only the majorities viewpoint has any validity).
to their credit, i feel like
to their credit, i feel like maybe they we’re going for a imgur type vibe. but regardless, i agree, they missed the mark. and i feel it had/has to do with more with demographic than anything else. on tech websites, the demographic is more concerned with being right/correct. where as on a site like imgur, funny is gonna win more often than not. and this in turn, engenders a different type of environment/atmosphere, for the most part. and to be even fairer to tr, the # number of votes of any given comment really doesnt have any bearing on its validity inherently. that is something that ‘we’, human beings, associate along w/it. the voting merely serves as a method of curation for the community. thats all. but again. i ultimately agree with you. doesnt work with this type of demographic imo. to busy trying to be right, to even know what funny is…
