Lenovo has introduced their latest Yoga convertible notebook, and this one isn’t just thinner and lighter – it’s 14.9 mm thick and weighs just 2.8 lbs – Lenovo claims that it’s the world’s thinnest Intel Core i-series laptop. And the improvements don’t stop with the external design, as Lenovo has upgraded virtually every aspect of the Yoga.
First off, 14.9 mm (0.59 inches) would be slim for a thin-and-light notebook anyway, but the Yoga’s thinness is even more impressive considering its 2-in-1 convertible design. The unique hinge mechanism is part of what allows Lenovo to keep such a slim profile, and this aspect has also been revised with a new version of the “watch band” hinge for the Yoga 900 that Lenovo says offers smoother movement than before.
So what’s new under the hood? The latest Intel 6th generation processors to start with, and here are more of the specs:
- Processor: Up to 6th Generation Intel Core i7
- Display: 13.3" QHD+ (3200 x 1800) IPS, 300 nits
- Graphics: Integrated Intel HD Graphics
- Memory: Up to 16 GB LP-DDR3L
- Storage: Up to 512 GB Samsung SSD
- WLAN: 2×2 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.0
- Ports: 2x USB Type A 3.0, 1x USB Type C 3.0 with video out, 1x DC-in with USB 2.0 function, Audio Combo Jack
- Card Reader: 4-in-1 (SD, MMC, SDXC, SDHC)
- Webcam: 1MP 720p HD CMOS Camera
- Audio: JBL Stereo Speakers with Dolby DS 1.0 Home Theater Certification
- Battery: 4 Cell 66 Wh Li-Polymer, up to 9 hours battery life
- Operating System: Windows 10 Home
- Dimensions (W x D x H): 12.75" x 8.86" x 0.59" (324 x 225 x 14.9 mm)
- Weight: Starting at 2.8 lbs (1.3 kg)
In keeping with the Yoga name this laptop features a 360-degree hinge design, allowing virtually limitless possibilities for using the machine. This new Yoga also features a battery with much greater density than before – 50% more, according to Lenovo – and a revised cooling system that provides up to 30% better cooling as well as quieter performance.
The Yoga 900 starts at $1199, but the base models will differ in specs depending on where you look. Best Buy seems to have the better deal as they will offer a unit at the introductory price featuring a Core i7-6500u processor, while Lenovo’s base model has an i5-6200u for the same $1199 price. Both versions feature 8 GB of memory, and a 256 GB SSD.

More of Intel’s Ultrabook(TM)
More of Intel’s Ultrabook(TM) influenced crap with those U/M and up to dual core i7(Gimped) series processors gimping down laptop performance! Yes Intel has used its monopoly market influence to gimp down overall laptop performance because it’s running out of effective process node shrinks. So now the entire laptop marketplace parts supply chain is so full of unsold Ultrabook form factor laptop cases and associated gimped down cooling solutions that the laptop OEM’s have even taken to trying to pawn these Ultrabook solutions onto the AMD APU based laptops under the name Thin and light! And there are little to no laptops that are engineered to use that Carrizo FX8800P at 35 watts, at a loss of 30% performance for an FX8800P forced into a lifetime of 15 watts maximum usage!
The Laptop/PC market continues its shrinkage, but OEMs will continue to flog these Ultrabook/Thin and Light laptops, and most people’s older laptops with non Intel U/M series processors are more powerful. Just look at the pricing on these devices and see what processing power is available for these outrageous prices! What a joke and people are not buying the gimping, and AMD will loose more Carrizo sales if it can not convince OEMs to get some 35 watts capable Carrizo FX8800P regular form factor laptops on the market!
No stupid PC/Laptop marketing campaign is going to convince people to purchase these overpriced abominations, when their current laptops have more processing power! AMD had a nice product in its Carrizo FX8800P APU, but OEM’s have only offered the APU in Gimped down laptop Thin and light configurations that rob the part of 30% of its potential performance, and the Carrizo APU is the only laptop APU with AMD’s latest GCN graphics. What will convince people to buy is getting some regular form factor laptops with the Carrizo FX8800P able to run at its top wattage of 35 watts, and options for a latest AMD generation GCN discrete mobile GPU to pair with the Carrizo FX8800P’s integrated graphics. The Carrizo FX 8800P has way better integrated graphics for the price that Intel will ever offer at the same price point, and there is definitely something fishy going on in the marketplace that only sees the FX8800P shoved into laptops that can only run the part at 15 watts, that and the lack of 1080p+ screen options!
Intel will Never offer its highest graphics SKUs at an affordable price point relative to AMD’s graphics at a more affordable price point, and that AMD Carrizo FX8800P beats the pants off of any Intel U/M series and Core i3, i5, i7(non GT3e $$$$) series in graphics workloads, and the AMD part can do more general purpose computations on its GPU ACE units! Windows 10 with the baked in spyware, forced non-security updates, ads in the OS, and the ever increasing M$ presence in PC’s/Laptop’s UEFI/BIOS firmware(secure Boot with no secure Boot OFF SWITCH OEM “OPTION”) will cause more sales declines!
