The new bk3000 Ultrasound System from Analogic will use an embedded HD7850 and OpenCL to triple the quality of the information the ultrasound reveals. This will allow ultrasounds to reveal anatomical detail and micro-vascularization that was not available with previous ultrasound technology and could even enable Gamegaters to locate their own heads with the use of the E14C4t transducer. The most familiar usage of ultrasound is for displaying a fetus in utero but there are far more medical uses for this type of (mostly) non-invasive scan and the increase in detail and the transformation abilities that Open CL brings will not only make it more effective but could expand the usefulness of ultrasounds as a diagnostic tool. As we at PC Perspective continue to age we are very appreciative of advances such as this, especially if we can get a split screen that allows us to do a little light gaming while the doctors poke and prod!
SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Jan. 12, 2015 — AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) today announced that the AMD Embedded Radeon HD 7850 GPU is enabling cutting-edge application performance for the BK Ultrasound, powered by Analogic, bk3000 ultrasound system. Analogic is a leader in developing healthcare and security technology solutions to advance the practice of medicine to save lives.
“The AMD Embedded Radeon HD 7850 GPU with OpenCL provides a powerful and efficient pairing,” said Cameron Swen, segment marketing manager, medical applications, AMD Embedded Solutions. “This product is yet another proof point to AMD’s dedication to the healthcare segment through its technology, which helps facilitate crisp, detailed medical image visualization and other advanced graphics-driven capabilities, helping doctors provide improved care for patients.”
Analogic used OpenCL standard to gain access to the GPU for general-purpose computing, referred to as “GPGPU,” delivering exceptional performance and offering system and development cost reduction through cross-platform portability. As a result of using AMD GPU technology, Analogic achieved a 3x improvement in the amount of information in each ultrasound image and reduced time from capture to presentation. Traditional FPGAs and DSPs create a fixed, inflexible implementation that requires custom software targeted at specific hardware. Going to a software-based solution using OpenCL helps to further lower the development cost and provides improved long term value since the software can be used across product lines and through generation shifts.
“It was a critical design goal for us to implement a platform that delivered exceptional performance,” said Jacques Coumans, chief marketing and scientific officer, Analogic. “After reviewing the options available, we chose the AMD Embedded Radeon HD 7850 GPU for its excellent quality and scalability. The bk3000 ultrasound system, powered by AMD embedded graphics technology, delivers exceptional speed and image fidelity, which allows clinicians to identify anatomy and flow dynamics deeper in challenging patients.”
The AMD Embedded Radeon HD 7850 is based on AMD’s award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture to advance the visual growth and parallel processing capabilities of embedded applications. In addition to ultrasound, other applications for GPGPU include some of the most complex parallel applications such as terrain and weather mapping, facial and gesture recognition, and biometric and DNA analysis.
The new Analogic bk3000 ultrasound system is targeted for urology, surgery, general imaging, and procedure guidance applications and is commercially available in key markets worldwide.
Is there some sort of a
Is there some sort of a mandate for all journalists to condemn that certain hashtag in as forced a way as it takes?
If you don’t, do you get fined by the feelings police?
I wonder if it’s powerful
I wonder if it’s powerful enough to detect the ethics of a video game industry journalist? Probably not, that’s on the atomic scale.
It’s internet activism. Moral
It’s internet activism. Moral self-license. You don’t actually have to do anything commendable. Just say something about an issue. Or even better, change your twitter icon. Now, you can grant yourself the benefit and judgement of having contributed to some sort of good cause without actually having had to sacrifice for said cause.
You don’t even have to be familiar with the issue. Just take the generally accepted “right” side of the issue and parrot it. Now you can go to bed feeling like a real hero!
I mean, really, I get enough of the idiots on both sides everywhere else. I kind of thought PCPer would be one of the few places where we left that garbage (again, on both sides as both are full of doxers, threats, people trying to get people fired, and all sorts of other hideous behavior) at the door.
At the very least, it is an unrelated and unnecessary distraction from the content as evidenced by half of the responses as of this post being about it. And it comes across as very agenda’d. Like someone who can’t help but bring up “abortion” or “gun rights” or “immigration” at any opportunity, even if they have to cram it in awkwardly.
Of course, any criticism or commentary about it will be gleefully dismissed as the rantings of angry butthurt “GGs”, because that is a simpler explanation than accepting criticism from someone who supports some of the criticisms of the industry that GG purports to be about *and* has financially supported the likes of Zoe Quinn (such as through Patreon) since before GG was a thing.
The only thing I despise more is when one bunch of assholes sits in judgement of another bunch of assholes, as if they themselves aren’t also a bunch of assholes.

So this is a GPU used to
So this is a GPU used to accelerate in processing 3d imaging of ultrasound, nothing new here, ever seen the geology and oil field prospecting industrial supercomputers, its just that the medical imaging is using a much shorter wavelength. GPUs(vector processors) have been doing this for decades. The Gamegaters would be the ones with the prominent Neanderthal brow ridge, this would also include the Fanbois, and both would show up on ultrasound as having ultra thick skulls enclosing pea sized lumps of gray matter.
AMD is not new to this market(medical), and most gaming industry websites are mostly sponsored content thinly disguised as reviews.
They’ll review the Mac Mini, but there is an HP mini desktop, about the same size and dimensions of a Mac Mini, that is able to have its CPU(an actual desktop SKU) updated, it costs around the same, or a little lower price than the Mac Mini, and will take a quad core i7, and 16GB of updateable memory, M2 slot for SSD, and SATA for hard drive. It will never get reviewed, they will review the Gimped out underpowered Mac Mini, because it is a sponsored review, and just because HP labels the device for business use, does not mean it is not a better deal, and way more updateable, oh they will probably say this is spam, but a lot of these so called articles coming from some
“Reporters/journalist” are ads masquerading as subjective content. Will this product get a review, not likely form the gaming websites, they’ll review the hell out of the Mac Mini, crappy as the latest integration of the Mac Mini is.
The Intel NUC, gets reviewed, same for a few other makers, as long as there’s money in it for the writers of the Ad content, and most of it is an Ad(straight up cut and pasted with very little rewording from the sponsor’s marketing department), and not really a review.
Yes, tech coverage is
Yes, tech coverage is infested with native advertising and I always take issue with what are essentially copy and pasted press releases. I agree that this article seems really out of place. The product isn’t impressive or interesting and it is mostly just a press release with an intro paragraph. However, it is unlikely that anyone is going to pay a tech site like this (in particular) to talk about their ultrasound product. And they certainly wouldn’t appreciate dragging the whole GG/Game Journalism bullshit into it.
It’s more reasonable to assume that it was just something that struck the interest of one or more PCPer’s and they felt it was worth sharing with readers. Sometimes that sense is more accurate than others. They can’t be on target all the time.
I think that generally goes for most other products, too. They can’t cover *everything* with limited manpower and it will often come down to what they think will be of interest to the most readers. (And when it comes to Mac — Apple doesn’t pay for native advertising or anything else, so if there’s a bias in coverage for things like the Mac Mini, there’s unlikely to be anything coming from the Apple direction in return for it).
Tech journalism — especially in frequently updated short-piece blog formats like PCPER — is particularly difficult to discern sometimes. So much of the coverage is “hey, here’s this new product or technology or company and here’s what little we know about it”. Experience makes some cases painfully obvious, but most of the time the difference in actual content and presentation between is so little as to make differentiating content from native or sponsored advertising to be a coin-toss.
You end up having to pick your horses. While I’m personally off-put by the slag in the intro and thought it was beneath these guys, these are guys I tend to buy into without feeling they’re “bought off”. Their affinities and relationships (like with NVIDIA) are not hidden and I can easily take these things into consideration when I consume the content. There are other people that I wouldn’t trust with my worst enemy’s money.
I could see your point of view about this article, in particular, taken by itself. Viewed in context of the rest of the content over the years, it doesn’t seem as egregious or nefarious.
I don’t get the point about
I don’t get the point about appreciating this more as the PCPer crew ages. Presume it has something to do with testicular or prostate cancer? Thought I don’t know if you use an ultrasound with prostate cancer, like you do with testicular ( a thoroughly unenjoyable experience!).
Yes, prostate. This new
Yes, prostate. This new scanner looks to offer the ability to do external ultrasound exams which is a good thing.
So, I actually got out of bed
So, I actually got out of bed to write this. None of you know me, so you don’t understand how momentous that is. I don’t get out of bed for anything.
My wife is at work — she’s a bartender — and won’t be home for a few hours yet, but I was laying in bed about to set my alarm for work in the morning and when I picked up my phone, PCPer was open in the browser, so I decided to refresh it and check up on the latest news.
I’m a relatively new reader to the site; I started reading around the time of the FCAT debacle due to this site’s connection with TechReport, my “home” tech site. I like the content, mostly, even if I don’t care for the site’s layout. But this:
is just disgusting.
Not only is it a pointless swipe at a massive group of people in a completely off-topic and unrelated article — wildly unprofessional — but it also exposes the writer as someone who is apparently against what GamerGate stands for; namely, truth, accountability, and fairness in game journalism and elsewhere. These are the values of someone aligned with GG — it is not a ‘hate movement’ (indeed, our opponents have done several orders of magnitude more ‘hate speech’ and threats than any of us), and it is not ‘against women’. I myself am a woman, and a homosexual, and a minority, and a gamer, and I am #notyourshield.
By saying something like the above, the writer is showing us that he is against truth, accountabilty, and fairness. I sincerely hope the author was just trying to be cute, or comes forth to admit his ignorance of the topic, or that Ryan will censure him, because otherwise I may not be reading this site anymore. I don’t really care what Mr. Hellstrom’s political views are, but I don’t want or need to hear about it in a new post about an ultrasound machine.
Heh, wish I could edit
Heh, wish I could edit posts.
This is the second comment
This is the second comment like this from Jeremy that I’ve seen. Ryan, Allyn and Josh do great work, otherwise I’d have stopped visiting after the first one.
The fact that Jeremy seems to only ever rewrite press releases and also doesn’t understand peoples dissatisfaction with the games media is precious though. Essentially the guy who copies and pastes marketing fluff thinks he, as a ‘journalist’, is now entitled to shit on anyone who questions journalistic ethics.
Hey, auxy, I know who you
Hey, auxy, I know who you are–also a TR regular.
Well said.
I hear you, I’ve been waiting
I hear you, I’ve been waiting for Jeremy to get fired for months.
At what point in that article
At what point in that article did he say anything bad about anyone? I think you need to get out more. I mean really, have you stood back and looked at your comment there? At some point you have to stand back and accept when you are out of control and cope with it.
You people at PCper sure know
You people at PCper sure know how to shot yourself in the foot. Are you aware most of people reading your websight are also gamers, and thus are not likely to appreciate you siding with same reactionaries that invoke death to gamers, support harassment and doxing of gamers, promote corruption in gaming media, advocate misandry and demand political and ideological censorship of games?
WTF were you thinking?
WOW WTF are people on today?
WOW WTF are people on today? I think people are pissed off bcoz AMD GPU is being used for something Important rather than stupid useless gaming.
Get a life people. And the only problem I could see here is Jeremy Hellstrom associating important stuff with Gaming with his title. And even that I think it was cleverly done and quite funny.. Can everyone else pls GTFO
