There is a lot to like about this particular 13.3" ASUS Zenbook, perhaps the most noticeable is the IPS display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution and a capacitive display capable of tracking 10 contact points. There is another reason to fall in love with this notebook, it can run Ubuntu with all of the features enabled without any extra work required. The specifications under the hood are rather impressive as well, a Core-i7 4558U with Intel Iris Graphics 5100, 8GB of DDR3-1600 and two 128GB SSDs capable of supporting RAID. Those of you looking for a powerful notebook which does not require Windows to run properly would be wise to read this review at Phoronix.
"As I wrote about at the beginning of March, I bought the ASUS Zenbook UX301LA-DH71T Haswell-based ultrabook to replace an Apple Retina MacBook Pro as my main system. I've been using this latest Zenbook with Intel Iris Graphics and dual SSDs for several weeks now as my main system and have taken it on four business trips so far and it's been running great. Paired with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, the ASUS Zenbook UX301LA makes a rather nice lightweight yet powerful Linux system."

Could ASUS do this with a
Could ASUS do this with a regular formfactor laptop, one that utilizes a quad core i7, and descrete graphics, and lose the touch screen but keep the IPS and resolution. This ultra book thing has gone too far, and laptops are light enough. All that high resolution behind fingerprint smudges, man what a waste, and with 10 greasy trackable contact points that screen is going to look like the grill slab at Joe’s diner, we need more Windex!
Too bad there is no
Too bad there is no compensation for NOT having Windows pre-loaded.
Yeah, I got Unbuntu to work dual-boot on my laptop- but I didn’t fall in love with it. I’d rather have a more vanilla Linux OS.
So True, well hopefully they
So True, well hopefully they will offer Linux Mint, and Mint as well as Ubuntu are debian based, Linux Mint being based off of Ubuntu(debian unstable)! It should not be too hard to make the change to Mint from Ubuntu. I would love to see a gaming laptop that comes with the Steam OS, also Debian based! And I will be a tablet owner for the first time, should a Nvidia’s K1 based tablet ship with a full linux distro. Android does not run Blender or Gimp as far as I know. The windows and Wacom based graphics tablets cost too much, and a K1 based tablet would make a great graphics tablet with a Full Linux distro! Android is not so much for creation, but Blender and Gimp are free, and they do run under Linux(Full distro). Really Too much attention is given to Android, and not enough attention is given to full linux on the tablet form factor! I know that Blender may need a little more power, for rendering and such, but for 3d mesh modeling, Blender should work just fine on a Nvidia K1 based tablet. I mention the K1 only beacuse the graphics on it support the full version of OpenGl, and hopefully there will be tablets based on AMDs low power x86 offerings also, but if any tablet comes with windows 8, forget it, Linux is definitely less of a resourse hog Than windows is, and Linux is free, in more ways than just cost alone. Nvidia seems to be running all over the place lately, and not focused at the moment, with all of their GPU and CPU roadmap shifting, that and they are too focused on just using Android or their SOC based mobile devices.
Nvidia’s K1 based tablets could give the WINTEL based graphics tablets, some much needed competition, should Nvidia focus more on getting a K1 refrence tablet running Steam OS, or Mint full Linux distro.
