Ever since CES we have been expecting an onslaught of 4K monitors to make their way to the market. Today Amazon.com listed the Samsung U28D590D for pre-order for the price of just $699. This is a 28-in display with a 3840×2160 resolution and support for 60 Hz refresh rates courtesy of the DisplayPort 1.2 connection.
That's a hell of a deal for a 4K monitor, especially one capable of 60 Hz (likely through MST)! Worth noting is that the monitor is a TN panel so picture quality won't be as good as the IPS options still selling for over $2500, like the ASUS PQ321Q we reviewed previously.
The panel has a pair of HDMI inputs but both are listed as only supporting 30 Hz 3840×2160 resolutions without any mention of using them both simultaneously.
You can find the full specifications list on Samsung's website, and we are working to get a sample in for testing in the next two weeks!
Sweet. Just before DP 1.3

At CES, we saw displays from other vendors that likely had the same TN panel. The smaller pixels resulted in a better looking panel with wider than normal (TN) viewing angles. The colors shifted far less than expected when changing viewing angle. If this one has the same panel, I'd call it a buy, especially at that price.
thanks for the post.

Damnit, why won’t you let me write it off so easily. Now I’m at the point of considering it. Unless I happen to magically see it in person somehow, which would fully tip me either way.
The moment this came out I
The moment this came out I screamed “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!” and threw money at Amazon until this monitor came out.
I regret NOTHING. It’s crisper than pin-sharp. It’s exquisite for running 3D modeling software on; for gaming, it’s an utter thrill. Not one dead pixel. Cry “TN!” for as long and hard as you like; I do VFX for a living, and don’t have a qualm about this thing’s color acuity.
SO worth every penny.

why ?

They can offer this price
They can offer this price because it’s a TN panel. I can only imagine what an IPS version of this monitor will cost.
why do people get so but-hurt

I would love to see OLED over this

Ryan glad to see you are on
Ryan glad to see you are on the same page with a lot of us looking for that next step in gaming quality. I ordered this last week from amazon after waiting over a month for Asus to confirm their 28″ UHD (4K). JJ has been active with the community giving updates, but unfortunately the information for me is simple – $100 higher MSRP than this samsung and no confirmed release date.
Time to finally put some stress on my 780 Ti’s :).
April is looking to be great
April is looking to be great month with the introduction of this Samsung 4k monitor, along with the Ultra wide LG UM95 (3880x1440p) and the Asus Swift PG278Q 144hz 1440p.
Cant wait to see those reviews here Ryan!
Good monitor for gamers. The
Good monitor for gamers. The 4k ips panels still have a somewhat slow response time and arent great with fast motion. If you want to primarily game in 4k or watch fast paced action movies in 4k this monitor may be a better choice for now till they get the 4k ips response times down.

Yeah, heard these TN panels
Yeah, heard these TN panels will start popping up from a number of display manufacturers and that they are supposedly fairly good with respect to what people typically expect from TN. Naturally it won’t be suitable for everyone, aseptically professionals requiring a high degree of color accuracy and the like. however, it should be great for some applications requiring more screen real-estate and higher resolution like programing.
Dell already put out the P2815Q for ~$699 which is the same price but the Dell is 30Hz limited. So it stands to reason that Dell will have to drop its price on the P2815Q. If the Dell had been 60Hz capable I would have definitely bought one to try it but it looks like Samsung my get my money instead:
Here is a link to a video preview of the Dell which looked really good IMO:

Newegg and Amazon now have it. I ordered a Samsung U28D590D 28″ 4K monitor directly from Amazon (not an Amazon reseller) for the MSRP of $699 with free S&H. Some retailers are still inflating the price by as much as ~$160 USD.
No it doesn’t have a VESA mount unfortunately,…
I’m looking at this monitor
I’m looking at this monitor mostly for a 4k video editing solution. I wont be doing much if any gaming. Currently I have the GTX 680 4gb in one editing bay and a HD 7970 GHZ in the other. Do you think I’ll need to upgrade my GPU for video editing applications or will I be able to use this panel at 60 hz with one of these cards installed?
Both of these cards have done will in adobe CC at 2560×1440 and i’m hoping I won’t need to drop another $600 + on a new GPU just to take advantage of a higher resolution screen.
Yep. No VESA mount, but the
Yep. No VESA mount, but the display itself is tip-top. The angle is fine for normal work use (I do visual effects, so oddly enough, I care about color).
I love this thing. The price astounded me, and it’s absolutely worth every penny.
Are there better panels?
Yep.
Are there better panels within doubling it’s price-point?
Only just.
