The most interesting aspect of the new Kaveri-based APUs from AMD, in particularly the A10-7850K part, is how it improves mainstream gaming performance. AMD has always stated that these APUs shake up the need for low-cost discrete graphics and when we got the new APU in the office we did a couple of quick tests to see how much validity there to that claim.
In this short video we compare the A10-7850K APU against a combination of the Intel Core i3-4330 and GeForce GT 630 discrete graphics card in five of 2013's top PC releases. I think you'll find the results pretty interesting.
UPDATE: I've had some questions about WHICH of the GT 630 SKUs were used in this testing. Our GT 630 was this EVGA model that is based on 96 CUDA cores and a 128-bit DDR3 memory interface. You can see a comparison of the three current GT 630 options on NVIDIA's website here.

I would like to see some performance comaprison against a 640 or even a 650 maybe. How fast can you outperform the a10 7850k with a dedicated gpu and how much performace increase would you get ?
I am working on some plans for a new office and light gaming rig for my dad and would like to see how money i can save or not save.
It would also be rather interesting to see what roll the ram freq plays in the the whole apu world. Obviously more mhz is more fps but to what point is it worth it ?

How does the APU fair against 640 or 650? As those are prob the bare minimum playable 1080p at a stable 30fps on at least medium settings on all those games above.

You should have the final price in mind. You can’t go much higher than those $170.

why not make this realistic for smart DIY builders and compare it to a 750K with a 7750 (or 7770) GDDR5 which is worth about the same money? (hey, if you save money with mem even a 7790 is realistic)
why use such a bad card like the 630? it’s pretty poor value for gaming,
another point, using 2133 ram is pointeless without the IGP, so the DIY builder can save some $ going with 1333-1600 cheapo ram, and 16GB/z87 for the i3 is overkill anyway.

Agreed get cheaper lower speed ram, use $ saved for better gpu. Probably get a faster gpu with $ to beat the AMD gpu. 2133mhz ram benefits the amd IGP a ton were as the i3 with dedicated card it doesn’t help it on anything noticeable. on newegg, 1333 mhz ram 16gb kit is 125$, 2133 is 160$. Sadly if you spend that much on ram for such low end you are bit of an idiot IMO.

Sooo…. you need to compare the with a relative expensive i3 when you can compare the 7850K against a i3 4130 (only 100 MHz slower than the 4330), and make a duo with this intel cpu and the cheapest GT 630 of the market.
All of this with useless options fot the intel option (for what you choose DDR3 2133 for this system, this option only beneficts the APU option, not the intel option, WHY you select a expensive motherboard with Z87 chipset, IF you chosen CPU isn´t OC capable, you only need a good H87/H85 motherboar, not this one of the “review”).
In Europe, your “options” and prizes are very different of your review:
APU = 7850K 160€.
Intel + nvidia (YOUR option) = 115€ + 58€ = 173€, only 13€ more expensive than the AMD one.
Well, what happens when you make a very much sane option for the intel system?:
cpu -> i3 4130 101€, gpu -> GT 640 GDDR5 82€ OR a GT 650 96€ OR a HD7770 1 GB (yes, because intel can run with AMD cards!!) for 86€, if you want a cheaper card, a R7 250 for 77€.
these combinations:
4130 + 640 183€. Only 10€ more expensive, and 23€ more than the APU option (but very mucha faster one, too).
4130 + 650 197€. More expensive, but very clearly a faster option.
4130 + HD770 187€. 27€ for a lot more faster option than the APU, again.
4130 + R7 250 178€, only a marginally more expensive option, but much faster again that your crappy selection.
None of these options are more expensive than the theorical selection that you makes (30$).
So, if I made 4 selection better than you, and you are a reviewer with some common sense, then you are making this crappy selection for one reason. A very dark one.
By the way, all of these overcosts are crap when you select a expensive and useless motherboard for the intel (Z87? you are serious about this one?) and a kit of memos that doesn´t have any sense for this system (but It has sense with the APU). – 30-50$ in the overall price.

See BF4 performance. The GT640 is 3 FPS SLOWER than the 7850K at 1920/medium preset.
Congratulations! The first one of your “4 better selections” is both SLOWER and MORE EXPENSIVE than the 7850K.
Also, something that the review didn’t point out: the 7850K fits into very low profile HTPC cases, runs quieter than the Intel setup with a discrete card and also draws less power.
Intel CPU + low-end discrete GPU is a horrible alternative to the 7850K.
I run an Intel i5-4670K as my main work PC, so I am no AMD fanboy, but I have the AMD 7850K APU sitting under my TV as a SteamBox and media center.

65W AMD A10-7800 and 65W/45W A8-7600 are going to be very popular with casual gamers or HTPC users. In few months, there will be several desktop as well as mobile Kaveri APUs for evereyone.

I do have one issue with this video though, it sounds a bit like it was read from a book. One of the reasons I like the podcast is it’s conversational nature, you guys just tell it like it is.
I’d rather you have bullet points on a sheet of paper, speak of them as you would normally, give an opinion or two (as many as you want really) then maybe give a rating or award (or not)
P.S. for a video, you can put in the clips and graphics in post so you can keep the conversational feel.

Until the price of “fast” RAM comes down to Earth then Kaveri doesn’t look like an attractive option.
Currently, no matter how you slice it, you can build a rig with BOTH faster gaming and processing performance for the same money as any Kaveri rig.
Also I’m pretty sure there’s a dart board somewhere at AMD with Ryan’s face on it, so you guys can stop calling him an AMD fanboy. That’s just ridiculous.

yea, if you building a system on a the cheap, high speed ram is not gonna be something you will get. Most likely you will get 1333mhz or 1600mhz tops which will bottleneck the A10 down a bit. Can’t remember the one graph shows differences between ram speeds on an apu if it was 1600 vs 2133 or 1600 vs 2400. I was sure it was vs 2133 though and that was like 22% or something. If a person used 1333 it would be pretty sizable performance loss. for system on cheap like that, 4-8gb ram is kinda tops and surely won’t be 2133/2400mhz

Well all of you saying if you went for a lower spec CPU as in the i3 4130 and GT640 instead, ok I see your point the 630 was poor card to put it against but in the same view for the price the two paired together are a good price comparison and you can say that of the 4130 and the GT640.
But if you wanted more performance from the 7850K you could add an R7 240 or even a R7 250 down the line when budget suits to give games an extra boost, especially when you A) ramp up the system memory speed and B) have dual graphics.
Just remember this is a technology using one package to do all the features of multi-media making it easy to install and use, rather than use a low end cheaply made discrete card that will have a crap cooler on it and die with being used for games but using one package for everything will increase the lifespan due to it being cooled by a half decent heat sink I have had a few NVidia cards in my time and they die quite easily after a bit of use these include a Geforce 6800GT, Geforce 8400GS, Geforce 8500GT and a 9800GT after having all of these I switched to AMD and not one has died from use in games or any other application I have had a HD4850, HD4890, HD5850, HD6950 and now have a R9 280X I used to be a big fan of NVidia but now know and have learned that they suck……….the same with intel could be said though yeah sure enough they may have amazing CPU’s out there but the price tag that goes with them is basically for those who can afford it to say mine was more expensive and better than yours and then do not even use it to its full ability or only do web browsing they deserve a slap and be told go and get a tablet, lets put our money into a company that does more for there customers this is why I support AMD throughout my entire system spectrum……

this blog was downright marketing the 7850k. the best kaveri chip amd has to offer is the a8 7600 and it isnt out there yet. they hold it off coz they know for a fact it can perform a little less than 7850k for a much lower price. they need to sell the 7850k to the unknowing ppl before they release the a8 7600.
