First announced at Computex 2012, Acer is finally ready to share all the details (including pricing) on its upcoming Iconia W700 Windows 8 tablet.
For the uninitiated, the W700 is the top-end tablet in its Iconia W series. It will be based on an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i3 or Core i5 processor, 64GB or 128GB SSD, HD4000 graphics (intel processor graphics) and a battery that allegedly provides up to 8 hours of usage. That hardware is powering a 11.6” IPS display with 10-point multitouch and a resolution of 1920×1080. It further features a rear 5MP camera with autofocus and 1080p video recording and a front-facing webcam capable of recording 720p video.
The tablet also includes 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi as well as various sensors for map applications including a(n oddly named) “G-sensor,” accelerometer, and an E-compass. [No mention of a GPS chip though, so it’s unclear how useful the other map technology will be…]
External I/O includes three USB 3.0 ports, a Thunderbolt port, micro HDMI port, headphone output jack, and DC power jack.
Because of the Ivy Bridge CPU, the tablet has ventilation slots along the top edge of the tablet. It is less than half an inch thick and weighs in at 2.3 pounds.
Also relevant is that the Acer Iconia W700 will have an accessory dock that will hold the tablet in portrait mode at 70 ° for reading or 20 ° for an angled touchscreen. The dock can also hold the W700 tablet in portrait mode for reading ebooks and the like. A Bluetooth keyboard and micro-HDMI to VGA adapter are also available as bundled accessories.
Engadget takes a tour of the Acer ICONIA W700 Windows 8 tablet.
As far as new information goes, the W700 will be available on October 26 (Windows 8’s release day). There will be several SKUs with different levels of hardware (ie. Core i3 vs Core i5). MSRPs of the W700 tablet will range from $799.99 to $999.99 depending on the particular hardware configuration. Further, if you are an Acer corporate customer, you will be able to get the W700 tablet with an extended two year warranty and Windows 8 Pro for $1,049.99. You can find read the full press release on the Acer website.
The prices do seem to be on the high end for a Windows 8 tablet, but ASUS’ leaked Windows 8 tablet prices are not far off.
This is priced WAAAY TO HIGH!
This is priced WAAAY TO HIGH! ACER is smoking crack.
These should be priced 300-500 no higher.
Especially when they don’t include keyboards! What in the heck. Acer you want to sell tons of these rethink the price.
The price point is actually
The price point is actually pretty comfortable for a Windows tablet, especially if you compare with some of the others already out there.
Unlike the tablets with Atom processors (usually costs about $400-700 for the modern Atom tablets), these are much more powerful and more capable. If they’re too expensive, you may want to consider something like the Netbook Navigator 10T or 10S slates, which should both be fully compatible with Windows 8.
These are definitely holding higher display resolutions, more powerful processors than even the competitive Samsung Series 7 Slates and ASUS EP121 tablets (though the Acer has no mention of a digitizer display) at similar prices.
This tablet packs the power
This tablet packs the power of an ultrabook into the slate form factor. $900 for the Core i5 64GB model is more than acceptable. I’m still using an Acer Aspire Timeline from mid 2009 and it’s help up very well. The W700 is currently the front-runner in my Windows tablet search.
I agree. So far in my search
I agree. So far in my search for a new laptop/tablet/hybrid, this acer model is the best looking one price/spec-wise. compared to the dell xps 12 hybrid or the samsung ativ smart pc etc. this acer one seems to pack the most bang for your buck. My only concern is that i have yet to see hands on demos or the like and I am wondering how the hardware feels in your hand. ie is it cheap feeling or does it break easily.
Acer is not going to sell
Acer is not going to sell many of this model because the Microsoft Surface Pro is more capable and better designed at this price point. If Acer wants business it should throw in the Bluetooth Keyboard and HDMI-to-VGA connector free and lower its price to $799.99 for its top-of-the-line version of the Acer W700, now. I feel embarrassed for Acer, already.
They will sell the same
They will sell the same number of Ferraris I own.
I don’t know what the main
I don’t know what the main selling point is. The display is not that great with only 190 ppi. The ipad 3 has 2048×1536 on 9.7 inch ips for 263ppi = crystal clear smooth graphics and movies, ….similarly the asus infinity prime has around this amount also. So for non-business use the latter two models are much better, cheaper and also are top brands(The first models of the iconia also got bad reviews for their poor performance.) For enterprise business deployment the android tablets are much more cost effective and get the job done. For ease of use for non techies, the ipad is the clear winner. So how can Acer justify a top premium, other than it being a win 8 tablet. Others will soon have much better hardware at the same price point. Acer is 6 months too late to the market with this tablet.
IPad 3 top end version is
IPad 3 top end version is $829. Stepping down to Windows OS & Taiwanese brand & paying more? Ok, then! Good luck with that!
Do you not realize this will
Do you not realize this will run almost anything your desktop will?
It is not a tablet and does not even compare to one. Way more power and use.

This is aimed at real
This is aimed at real computer users, not some piddly iPad user. People who actually want to do work can use this and use it like a real desktop with real office programs and processing popping it onto a monitor with the hdmi and printing/real keyboards mice and other peripherals. Basically it replaces the need for a laptop, desktop and tablet. This price point is probably low. IPad, roflstomp.
First let me just say that I
First let me just say that I read the press release and there was no mention of Intel Thunderbolt support. I have heard that they removed the support so I’m not sure what to believe now. Thunderbolt is a distinguishing feature that would set the Acer Iconia W700 apart from other Windows 8 tablets.
Have said that, I have an ASUS Eee Slate EP121 Core i5 based tablet PC which I have recently installed Windows 8 Pro RTM on. This is the 64GB mSATA SSD model which was about ~$1100 new.
I think the Acer Iconia W700 is reasonably priced and anyone acquainted with PC tablet pricing and specs would likely agree. As far as I know Microsoft has not yet released Surface / Surface Pro tablet pricing so a price comparison isn’t possible at this time. The iPad and Android tablets are not directly comparable to aPC tablet especially with respect to price, specs and performance.
Yes, I’m confused on
Yes, I'm confused on Thunderbolt support as well. As far as I know, the specs have not changed. What I found odd about the press release / announcement though is that it doesn't mention any of the external ports. So I'm not sure… on one hand if it does still have Thunderbolt, I would have expected them to be touting that as a big feature. On the other hand they don't talk about any of the ports so it's hard to say either way 🙁
By observation I can tell you
By observation I can tell you this:
The port location in the provided photo above of the Acer Iconia W700 does not match that of the video. My guess is that the engadget video was of an older preproduction model like that seen in the Anandtech video of the Acer Iconia W700.
The photo above may be of newer production hardware. Take note that in the older videos the Intel Thunderbolt port was accessible on the upper left side even when docked but the Thunderbolt port is conspicuously absent in the photo above.
So something is certainly “up” with that. The only thing I can think of offhand is that perhaps there may be versions of the Acer Iconia W700 with Thunderbolt support and without. Announcing and releasing the non-Thunderbolt version first would be better served by not calling attention to the missing feature.
Hmm, that does sound
Hmm, that does sound plausible, to have two SKUs (one w/ TB, one without). There is definitely something going on with this though, so I'll keep looking for more information.
pre-order are up for the Acer

Not a big fan of the
Not a big fan of the accessory dock. The question is why don’t they offer a keyboard dock for any of these W700s? I am looking to get an 11″ tablet with an I3/I5, the full Windows 8 and a keyboard dock. I literally cant find any. Closest I get is either this with no keyboard option at all(I would pay the $150 or whatever!) or an atom based one like the SAMSUNG Series 5 XE500T1C-A01US. WTF?!
PS: Surface pro pricing isn’t out yet plus its only 10″ I want an 11.6
You want the Samsung ATIV
You want the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro then:

The big question is
The big question is “Available Where?” Try to buy one of these babies. Vendors have treated this and other Windows 8 tablets by thinking no one would want one and simply don’t have any to sell, can’t even say when they will become available if ever.
Need to look at Futureshop or
Need to look at Futureshop or Newegg to see these being pre-sold even before the release. So there has tom be somthing to the hype?
asus nexus 7 will likely
asus nexus 7 will likely dominate sales and beat the iPad tablet pc. because nexus superior in terms of hardware and price!!

I think a major point is
I think a major point is being missed here. The Acer W700 is a full blown computer platform. You can run programs like any computer or laptop. You are not just limited to apps. If you want a computer that functions like a tablet, I think this is a great alternative.
