Apple has upgraded their MacBook line to Intel Ivy Bridge and includes USB 3.0 support. The MacBook Airs will be supported by Intel HD Graphics 4000 where the new MacBook Pro will be powered by NVIDIA’s Kepler-based GeForce GT 650M. This GPU will be used to power a 2880×1800 (220ppi) resolution screen — which I will absolutely not feed into the “retina display” marketing term.
Apple has announced new hardware at the start of their World Wide Developers Conference this morning.
As Intel begins to flood the PC marketplace with their latest and greatest Ivy Bridge mobile processors it stands to reason that Apple would not want to be left out. Apple will update their entire laptop lineup to the new CPUs as well as add some Kepler to their MacBook Pro line. The biggest deal is the high resolution 2880×1800 displays which should make text look very smooth and crisp.

The MacBook Air will not have the option of discrete graphics. The 11-inch model will have a screen resolution of 1366×768 where the 13-inch model will contain a 1440×900 screen. Both USB3.0 and Thunderbolt will be supported on each of the MacBook Airs as well as each of the MacBook Pros. SSD technology is also prominently mentioned and was expected.
The new MacBook line ships today. The new lineup of MacBook Airs has starting prices of between $999 and $1499 and the high-resolution MacBook Pro starts at $2199.

I was never a big fan of the mac platform because pc’s always had the technological edge when it came to speed and customization, but i have to say that a 2k (it’s actually a bit higher than 2K)monitor is something we pc users have to cash out a lot of money for.

It’s going to take MS to redesign the way Windows scales though, unless you plan to use the OS with a magnifying glass (man, at 3K, icons and text are going to be so small!).

Nope. When someone uses the “K” moniker, they are referring to horizontal resolution. (Which of course is a complete opposite of the #p or #i convention we’re all used to.)
Example: 4K has approximately 4000 horizontal dots.
Often it is “4x 1080p” which is 1980×2=3960 by 1080×2=2160.
3960×2160.
But it can also be several other resolutions like 4096 × 3112 and so forth.
… But they all measure the *horizontal* resolution.
… So the MacBook Pro high-resolution display would be a “3K” display.

Is there were all the Kepler manufacturing has been going? These laptops are available now, so I imagine that a lot of manufacturing time was reserved by Apple for nVidia to focus on them first.

i just read that within OSX
i just read that within OSX LION the highest u can go is 1920 x 1200, even when on the retina display, the system renders at twice that and then downscales back (im not sure i understand why)
…there are some screenshots from diablo 3 running on the display’s native res though.
Its also cool u can edit 1080p on fcp-x and keep both the GUI and the video at 1:1 res. (too bad fcpx sux)

You misunderstood a bitttt…
You misunderstood a bitttt… OSX Lion can support higher resolutions. The Apple Cinema Display is 1440p or 1600p (depending on the model). So the OS can physically do it… Apple just does not let you. Everything would be too small unless the application knew to increase all of its font sizes and such properly.
What they do is basically 4x super-sampling antialiasing from a smaller fake resolution… but then resize it to your REAL resolution… rather than that fake smaller resolution.
This way a program from a developer who does not know any better will not just be drawn at 1/4th the intended size for people with these high resolution displays.
I’ve been trying for quite a while to find a better way to explain it in just words… and this is the best I’ve come up with. Sorry.

Higher resolutions are better as you can have more windows open to work in.Also text reads dramatically better with higher resolutions as new ipad shows.

a 24 inch PC monitor packing all that pixel density would be great…for resolutions like that we have to look at EIZO or other novelty brands that cost thousands and thousands of dollars. (ofcourse they support wider gamuts and multiple color spaces intended for professionals) but honestly… a 24 inch display with all that pixel count on rec709 wont bother anyone
It depends what you’re doing
It depends what you’re doing with that monitor. Editing images, that’d be geat. Playing a videogame on a 2k-ish 30″ display would probably not benefit too much. I’d rather spread it across more monitors than pack the pixel density into one (if I had to make the choice). Especially given how you need multiple of the highest end GPUs to really push even 2560×1600, still.
