Enermax have launched a new family of PSUs called MaxTytan, with the 800W model appearing for review on [H]ard|OCP.  These PSUs feature Sleemax cabling, each wire is covered in fabric which does look nice but adds bulk to the wires.  The cables plus the 80 PLUS Titanium rating add to the price, the MSRP is $200.  That hurts the rating [H] provided as the power quality they saw in testing was good, but not great, and is somewhat more expensive than the competition.  Drop by for the review, as the PSU provides decent power and a nice look for cases that expose components.

"Enermax pulls out a flagship with its MaxTytan PSU, this one rated at 800 watts. The MaxTytan PSU has some interesting features like its on-demand Dust Free Rotation fan system. It also comes with very "custom" looking SLEEMAX cable covers that wrap every single cable individually like you find in custom rigs. And huge Titanium efficiency!"

Is be quiet's Pure Power 600W PSU a 10?

Subject: Cases and Cooling | August 25, 2017 - 06:03 PM |
Tagged: be quiet!, modular psu, 600w, Pure Power 10, 80 PLUS Silver

Kilowatt class PSUs such as the Seasonic PRIME Platinum which Lee just reviewed are impressive and up to the task of powering the most powerful of systems but for most they are overkill.  For the majority of us, something in a 600W model will be sufficient for our needs as well as being more efficient.  A little while back [H]ard|OCP took a look at be quiet's Pure Power 10 600W 80 PLUS Silver modular PSU, the first be quiet! to meet their benchmarking table.  It operated quietly and it was handsomely built, however once they started testing the PSU simply could not take the heat.  If you live somewhere which never reaches 30C ambient this might be an acceptable solution but for the rest of us ... the review reveals a significant issue.

"This may come as a shock to you, but be quiet! power supplies are all about...wait for it...exceptionally quiet operation. However that is not the only virtue the Pure Power 10 series extols. be quiet tells us that this PP10 has "peerless dependability" and "best-in-class features." Let's see if we can set it on fire!"

FSP releases a trio of Platinum PSUs

Subject: Cases and Cooling | August 2, 2017 - 01:30 PM |
Tagged: FSP Group, modular psu, 750w, 650W, 550W, Hydro PTM, 80 Plus Platinum

FSP Group have just released three new 80 Plus Platinum Hydro PTM modular PSUs, in 750W, 650W and 550W models.  The Hydro branding comes from the fluid dynamic bearings in the 135mm fan which they have optimized for quiet operation.

Hydro PTM-750W_002.jpg

The 750W model has a pair of 4+4 power plugs for X299 users, the other two models will not though all will use ribbon cables to help you with cable management.  Internally you will find Japanese industrial grade electrolytic caps and a single 12V rail which will provide higher quality power than multiple rail designs.   All models will come with a 10 year warranty.

PR below the fold.

Seasonic's PRIME series of PSUs goes Platinum

Subject: Cases and Cooling | June 26, 2017 - 06:32 PM |
Tagged: Seasonic PRIME, 850W, 80 Plus Platinum, modular psu

It was almost a year ago that Lee reviewed the Seasonic PRIME 750W Titanium PSU; today it is [H]ard|OCP who has a review of a cousin of that PSU.  The Seasonic PRIME 850W Platinum PSU is a new addition to the PRIME family, bearing the same 12 year warranty as its relatives as well as the single 12V rail design and physical Hybrid button.  As [H] have already reviewed the previous 850W PRIME model, the newcomer has some big shoes to fill.  It comes very close to doing so, as you can see in their full review.

1496794935dtrk6eag20_2_9_l.jpg

"As is usual, Seasonic talks softly and carries a big stick. The biggest stick lately has been its Prime series power supplies. Today's Prime comes to us touting excellent efficiency, a fully modular design, tight output voltage, and a quiet noise profile supplied by a fluid dynamic bearing fan. Does Seasonic continue its current reign?"

Thermaltake's Smart Pro RGB PSU series can provide you with the good kind of lightshow

Subject: Cases and Cooling | May 29, 2017 - 05:57 PM |
Tagged: thermaltake, Smart Pro RGB, 850W, modular psu

The Smart portion of the Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB seems to refer to the Riing 14 RGB fan that can produce up to 256 colours with five different lighting modes to choose from, and built-in memory to save your light shows. [H]ard|OCP turned the RGB off immediately, then proceeded to test the power the PSU provides, as you would expect.  The PSU passed all the tests, but not with flying colours, as some performance measures such as voltage regulation did not match the competitions.  On the other hand, if you need RGBs on your PSU then Thermaltake's Smart Pro RGB models are worth your consideration.

1494980196z9k8jyq5nt_2_8_l.jpg

"Frag-harder RGB lighting is all the rage, and so of course we are now seeing those in PSUs too. Thermaltake has a healthy 850 watt PSU here for review today that actually hits the sub-$100 mark by 1 cent. Fully modular with great DC output; is there anything not to like? You can turn the RGB off. And a 7 year warranty."

FSP introduces the new Hydro PTM+ liquid cooled PSU

Subject: Cases and Cooling, Shows and Expos | May 23, 2017 - 03:28 PM |
Tagged: FSP Group, water cooling, modular psu, Hydro PTM+, 80 Plus Platinum PSU, kilowatt, computex

FSP will be showing off several new products at Computex but the most interesting, by far, is a watercooled PSU called the Hydro PTM+.  Under normal operations this is a 1200W modular PSU with an 80 PLUS Platinum rating, but include it in a cooling loop and it will provide up to 1400W of power.  It can also be run silently up to 50% load, so if you only need ~600W this might still be of use if you are attempting a silent build and yes, there are LEDs on the PSU.  Hopefully we can see some more revealing pictures from Computex with the internal layout exposed.

unnamed.jpg

They will also be showing off the world's smallest 850W PSU, the 80 Plus Platinum certified FLEX as well as a not so petite 1600W 80 Plus Platinum PSU for servers and the more extreme of us.  Along with those PSUs they are introducing the The ERK, or Easy Redundant Kit, which allows you to hook up two independent PSUs which don't normally support redundancy and rely on them just as if they were.  Check out the full PR below.

Enermax speaks of a small Revolution, a 650W SFX PSU

Subject: Cases and Cooling | May 4, 2017 - 05:49 PM |
Tagged: enermax, SFX PSU, 650W, revolution, modular psu, lepa

Perhaps the box looked a little empty when Enermax placed their SFX Revolution PSU into the packaging, so they filled up some of the empty space with a Lepa Boom wireless speaker for you to enjoy while assembling your machine. [H]ard|OCP didn't spend a lot of time reviewing the speaker as they were too busy investigating the first SFX PSU they have encountered from Enermax.  Overall this PSU passed every test they tossed at it and the price on the unit is favourably comparable to two 600W units [H] tested previously so if you are building a tiny machine that needs a good amount of juice then this review is worth looking into.

1492557571kc9JbojDcd_2_8_l.jpg

"The small form factor segment has been hot for a while now when it comes to enthusiast PC builders and Enermax is entering the SFX fray today with the Revolution SFX 650W PSU. It touts fanless modes under 30% load, 100% Japanese capacitors, and complete flat flexible cables for easier routing in tight cases."

MOAR POWER! 1200W of Platinum rated Strider PSU from Silverstone

Subject: Cases and Cooling | March 28, 2017 - 03:37 PM |
Tagged: Silverstone, Strider Platinum ST1200-PT, 1200W PSU, modular psu, 80 Plus Platinum

Externally the new Silverstone Strider Platinum ST1200-PT is identical to the 1000W model, sharing the same 80 Plus Platinum rating as well as a fan which does not start to spin until the PSU hits 40% load.  The internals are somewhat different, as this PSU can deliver up to 100A on the 12V line and do it without any issues as you can see in [H]ard|OCP's review.  Indeed the only drawback to this PSU is one it shares with others from SilverStone; the price is on the high side compared to the competition.  Then again the quality also surpasses many other PSUs in the same class, so perhaps the premium price is worth it for you?

1489118784VY14QBrTi5_3_7_l.jpg

"SilverStone comes to us with huge Platinum efficiency power with its Strider PSU rated for 1200 watts of constant power delivery. The PSU also sports a beefy feature set to go along with being able to support even the healthiest enthusiast computer build. Fanless modes below 40% power, dust filtering, and 16 sets of SATA connectors lead the list."

Dual PSU fans; a revolutionary idea from Enermax?

Subject: Cases and Cooling | March 13, 2017 - 03:47 PM |
Tagged: DUOFan, modular psu, enermax, Revolution Duo, 700W

Enermax is bringing back a classic in PSU design, dual fans in a push pull configuration was the standard not even a decade ago.  Their marketing team chose Revolution to describe the new PSU, perhaps missing a chance to refer to it as a Heritage, Pedigree or other such designations that you see on a lot of lifestyle products lately.  The two fans, one 100mm and one 80mm are housed in a casing just shy of 6" which may be attractive to those with limited room inside their cases.  There is a dial on the back of the PSU which allows you to manually adjust the speed of the fans, allowing for quiet operation if you so choose.  Even at the highest settings this PSU is still much quieter than those PSUs of old cooled by Delta screamers, modern fans are a definite plus in this design.  Check out how this 700W PSU stacks up to the competition in [H]ard|OCP's full review.

1485318770nVODgZqM0L_2_9_l.jpg

"Two is always better than one, right? Two fans in your new PSU is a win-win? That is the theory behind the Enermax Revolution Duo series of Power Supply Units. Enermax has a long history of producing PSUs ranging from good to excellent. Where will the new Duo fall in line today?"

Living in VIVO 24K, a unique looking PSU

Subject: Cases and Cooling | February 17, 2017 - 06:13 PM |
Tagged: modular psu, VIVO, VIVO 24K, 650W, 80 Plus Gold

VIVO is certainly not a top of mind brand name, which is part of the reason [H]ard|OCP were interested in reviewing their 24K 650W PSU.  The top, front and back of the PSU feature a honeycombed design which not only give it a unique look but also help with ventilation.  The test results from this newcomer were a pleasant surprise; it measured up to the established competition, offering good power delivery and deserving of the advertised 80 PLUS Gold rating.  It is nice to see a new product measure up straight out of the gates, it will be worth keeping an eye on VIVO in the future.

1486689034hFLC4eLEVP_2_8_l.jpg

"VIVO is likely not a brand name that you are familiar with when it comes to enthusiast-level computer power supplies. We were not familiar with the VIVO name assuredly and its single PSU offering. All the more reason to put it through our PSU testing gauntlet when VIVO asked us to. Will VIVO regret putting its value brand PSU to the test?"
