The top end model which Kitguru reviewed will cost you well over $3000 but it is an impressive machine.  Part of the cost comes from the G-SYNC IPS display, capable of up to 120Hz as well as the GTX 1080 Max-Q which powers it.  The laptop features a mechanical keyboard and all of the I/O features you would expect, including a Type-C Thunderbolt port.  The touchpad design may not be a strong point however, it is located above the keyboard, directly below the screen which may not be comfortable for frequent use.  It is made of glass and reveals a fan and the GPU heatpipes, a nice visual look with a drawback; after extended usage that glass is hot!

"With its Predator Triton 700, Acer will be hoping that it has ticked all the boxes when it comes to building a portable gaming powerhouse."

I am the leopard king? MSI's new gaming laptop

Subject: Mobile | December 19, 2017 - 02:27 PM |
Tagged: msi, gaming laptop, GP62 7REX Leopard, GTX 1050 Ti, i7-7700hq

The model of MSI's GP62 7REX Leopard Pro gaming laptop which The Tech Report reviewed sells for $1300, middle of the road for a gaming laptop.  The 4GB GTX 1050 Ti will be able to drive the built in 1080p display though it may struggle at higher graphic settings on an external monitor with a higher resolution.  The overall design was favourably received, the SteelSeries keyboard is a nice touch and the laptop keeps itself cool without creating a lot of noise.  The battery life disappointed The Tech Report, but in most cases this laptop will be plugged in so this is not as bad as it would be on an ultraportable.

"With a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti inside, MSI's GP62 7REX notebook puts plenty of gaming power into a relatively affordable and portable package. We put it through our rigorous test suite to see how it stands up to the competition."

Gigabyte's Aero 15 gaming notebook is a mere 19.9mm (0.78") at its thickest point and weighs in at 2.1 kg (4.62lbs), yet it manages to hold respectable components inside.  Intels Core i7-7700HQ along with a proper 6GB GTX 1060, a Samsung 512 GB PCIe SSD and 16GB of DDR4-2400.  That list of parts will set you back $1900, about what you should expect from a gaming laptop; if you want to play Prey and Doom on the road you do have to pay.  Check out The Tech Report's full review to see how it handled a variety of other games.

Alongside other updates, Apple at its World Wide Developers Conference this morning announced some modest updates to the MacBook line of notebooks.

Starting with the MacBook Pro, we see an across the board upgrade to Kaby Lake processors. As we saw on the desktop side with Kaby Lake, there aren't radical differences with these new processor,  however we do see a 200MHz bump across the line on clock speeds. Essentially these are the same relative chips in Intel's Kaby Lake processor lineup as Apple used in the Skylake generation.

Disappointingly, we do not see the rumored expandability to 32GB of RAM that many power users have been asking for.

Additionally, graphics are generationally upgraded to Intel's Iris Plus 640 and 650 on the 13" models with and without the touch bar respectively.

The 15" MacBook Pro models see refreshed Polaris GPUs in the form of the Radeon Pro 555 and 560. It's worth nothing that the old entry level 15" MacBook Pro previously had the Radeon Pro 450 GPU, so the base configuration is now a more capable GPU even after you take away the expected improvements to the improved Polaris architecture seen in the RX 580.

In addition, the MacBook saw an upgrade to Kaby Lake processors. Apple also claimed that the onboard SSDs in this machine have seen a speed bump, but provided no real data on such claims.

Finally, the stalwart MacBook Air sees a processor speed bump. We aren't sure exactly what processor is in the new Air, but it seems to only have a 100MHz speed increase. Interestingly enough it still retains HD graphics 6000branding, which would lead us to believe this is still a Broadwell -based mobile processor.

These updated models are now available from Apple.
