Earlier today, NVIDIA announced the GeForce Gaming Celebration, taking place August 20th-21st, in Cologne, Germany.
NVIDIA promises that this open to the public event taking place before the Gamescom convention "will be loaded with new, exclusive, hands-on demos of the hottest upcoming games, stage presentations from the world’s biggest game developers, and some spectacular surprises."
For any readers that might be in the area and interested in attending, first come first served registration can be found here. For readers outside of the area, the event will also be live streamed.
PC Perspective will be attending the event, so stay tuned for more news and details! We can't possibly imagine what NVIDIA could be getting ready to announce.

Lenovo has announced the IdeaCentre Y710 Cube; a small form-factor system designed for gaming regardless of available space, and it can be configured with some very high-end desktop components for serious performance.
"Ideal for gamers who want to stay competitive no matter where they play, the IdeaCentre Y710 Cube comes with a built-in carry handle for easy transport between gaming stations. Housed sleekly within a new, compact cube form factor, it features NVIDIA’s latest GeForce GTX graphics and 6th Gen Intel Core processors to handle today’s most resource-intensive releases."
The Y710 Cube offers NVIDIA GeForce graphics up to the GTX 1080, and up to a 6th-generation Core i7 processor. (Though a specific processor number was not mentioned, this is likely the non-K Core i7-6700 CPU given the 65W cooler specified below).
Lenovo offers a pre-installed XBox One controller receiver with the Y710 Cube to position the small desktop as a console alternative, and the machines are configured with SSD storage and feature Killer Double Shot Pro networking (where the NIC and wireless card are combined for better performance).

At GamesCom in Germany earlier this week, Cooler Master showed off an updated mid-tower version of its Cosmos S: the Cosmos SE. This new case was on display at the company's GamesCom booth and is an aluminum mid-tower clad in all black. The Cosmos SE shares a similar outward appearance and form factor to the existing (full tower) Cosmos S, except it is shorter and features a redesigned front bezel. The side panel window shape is the same on the two Cosmos S-series cases. The new Cosmos SE does keep the solid aluminum handles and raised legs, however. The front IO is located above the 5.25" bays on the top edge of the case and includes two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0, and two audio jacks.
Internally, the case can accommodate ATX motherboards, three 5.25" drives, and at least five 3.5" or 2.5" hard drives or SSDs. A bottom mounted power supply sits below the motherboard, but with enough room for two dual slot graphics cards.
As far as cooling, the Cosmos SE can fit a 240mm radiator on the top of the case and a 360mm radiator with the front hard drive bays removed. Cable management has reportedly been tweaked as well.
The case looks nice but the ability to mount a 360mm rad (even at the cost of removing the 5.25" bays) to the top of the case would have been a welcome feature.
Unfortunately, beyond the photos coming out of GamesCom, details on the new case are scarce. Pricing and availability in particular are still unknown.

Battlefield 4 is still at Gamescom, possibly the last big trade show before launch, and they are still trickling out news. DICE just released their Levelution teaser, which is a cheesy name and I will not pretend to ignore that, but an interesting premise for level design. Keeping in line with the original premise for Battlefield, levels are designed for too many options to fully consider, leading to the characteristic "Battlefield Moments".
A Battlefield Moment is when something amazing, genius, or plain stupid happens in a multiplayer match and draws your attention.
Some popular examples include:
- The airborne murdering of pilots.
- Hijacking jets semi-automatically.
- Getting to the choppah.
- Sure, you can die instead.
- Indecisive snipers.
Of course capturing these moments are much more common since Bad Company 2 just due to how common video editing is. Battlefield 2 also had its moments. A personal favorite is when I dropped anti-tank mines, while parachuting, atop a heavy tank. It turns out the time it took to fall was enough for it to arm. I also enjoy proclaiming myself "The Kool-Aid Man" before running someone in my Teamspeak channel down by crashing a jeep through a wall.
DICE wants to show off their engine technology by including many user-triggered events, big and small, to give players options. You can destroy cover, lower doors, and otherwise succeed with out-of-box ideas. Check out the video, above, for more examples.
I am pretty sure the marketing people like showing off video of a skyscraper crumbling, too.
Battlefield 4 will launch October 29th in North America.

In much the same way as it was at E3 this year, AMD has plastered themselves all over the show floor at Gamescom 2013 in Cologne, Germany. The annual game celebration in Europe focuses not just on PC gaming but consoles as well but with AMD APUs at the heart of both the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4, they are about as universal as you can get.
The AMD booth at Gamescom obviously leans heavily on the world of PC gaming with both next-generation consoles not coming until November but the big draw is obviously the Battlefield 4 section that allows gamers to walk up and play. Due out October 29th here in North America, BF4 is likely to be one the biggest titles of the year available on current consoles, PC and the PS4 and Xbox One. And though nothing is confirmed it will likely be bundle game for Radeon graphics cards at some point as well...
Red capes and Battlefield 4
Much like the Penny Arcade Expo coming up next month in Seattle, Gamescom is an event where the public is invited to get hands on with impressive games and impressive technology without having to filter it through the eye of the media. AMD showcases unique capabilities of the PC gaming market in the booth as well like the 5-screen Eyefinity configuration seen here DiRT Showdown.
As is usually the case with public events, you're going to meet some interesting characters while you walk around but that is part of the fun! If you have never attended Gamescom, PAX, Blizzcon, Quakecon or anything like it, I would highly encourage you make plans to do so as it will really revitalize your excitement for gaming! While shows like CES and Computex drain me of energy, these public-facing experiences are much more spirited.
Other booths at the show are also running AMD-powered gaming systems for all of their demonstrations including Gaming Evolved partners like Deep Silver, Square-Enix, EA/DICE and Red5. If you haven't seen games like Thief or Saints Row IV in action then you are missing out and locals in Cologne still have the opportunity to do so. AMD claims that all the demo systems running these PC games are Radeon-powered: Battlefield 4, The Sims 4, Firefall, Saints Row IV, Need for Speed Rivals, FIFA 2014, Murdered Soul Suspect, and Final Fantasy XIV.
Even with all the other discussion and debate about AMD graphics technologies, the second half of 2013 is going to be incredibly exciting on all fronts!

EA TV conducted a broadcast of Battlefield 4, spectating gameplay from the attendees of Gamescom. Almost 13 minutes of were posted to Youtube and, because our readers are awesome, you get to see it here. Destructibility exceeding even Bad Company 2 is displayed in this map, Paracel Storm, as Russia and China fight over an island cluster.
... And the observer tools look interesting, too!
The hook of the map, at least one of them, is a windmill out in the ocean anchoring a destroyed frigate. Once the windmill is destroyed the wreckage is released, runs aground near a control point, and destroys a multi-level structure.
The video also announced another gametype, "Obliteration", which seems somewhat like a play on the Rush mode from Bad Company and Assault from Halo 2. Each team has 3 "MCOM" points which can be destroyed by planting a randomly spawning bomb. An interesting mashup.
I am, still, slightly upset that we have yet to see free bombing since Battlefield 2. Rumors have circulated, due to the promotional images from China Rising DLC, that bombers will make a reappearance in, at least, that DLC. The mechanic of bombers allows you to either: in the sky, carpet bomb to clear predictable attack paths; on the ground, lure enemies into bombing paths and chat with teammates in the sky.
Of course this is less relevant outside of the clan skirmish sphere, but still fun with a handful of friends on a public server.

DICE was at Gamescom in Germany showing off an assortment of new Battlefield 3 details through their booth and a short keynote speech. The vast majority of the keynote consisted of the two speakers playing Battlefield 3 co-op on the console. Aside from the live co-op demo there was a trailer from a more classic Battlefield map inhabited with 64 players and fighter aircraft. Check it out below, preferably in high resolution and fullscreen. You can then check out the unofficial BF3Blog for the complete weapon list with claymores and mortar launchers.

It was also recently revealed that Battlefield 3 would be locked to 30 frames per second on the consoles which drew fire from Activision who runs their game at 60 FPS. Their claim was that the added framerate is required to have a more responsive experience. Unfortunately as our previous article reporting on Mozilla’s stance on responsiveness shows: it is not as simple as 33.3ms versus 16.7ms latencies. Even under the assumption that the framerate is at its maximum you cannot tell the exact duration between input and TV draw without the use of a high-speed camera looking at both player-controller and monitor. Many frames could go by without even looking at the input loop and all the other dependent code on parallel out-of-sync threads that finally alter the state of the threads that draws what you should see. Be careful what you read folks; while yes, higher framerate gives the higher potential for lower latency between press and draw it is not necessarily the case. All of that said we will be on the PC which has its own set of methodologies for how to handle multi-process (there are still latencies inherent with any multiprocess game, but with different limits) and thus this is entirely irrelevant to us, but still a good learning experience regardless.
