CES 2016: Lian Li Puts Mini-ITX on a Yacht with the PC-Y6

Subject: Cases and Cooling | January 9, 2016 - 05:05 PM |
Tagged: Yacht, SFX, PC-Y6, mITX, mini-itx, Lian Li, CES 2016, CES, aluminum case

Lian Li was showing a Yacht-themed aluminum chassis at their booth on the CES show floor, and this is certainly among the most unusual designs we've seen for an enclosure.

DSC_0305.jpg

There is room for a powerful system within the enclosure, as the length of the boat design (just over 30 inches) allows for longer graphics cards (up to 300 mm supported). You will need an SFX power supply for this mini-ITX build, and CPU coolers will need to be of the low-profile variety with a 60 mm clearance available.

Specifications for the PC-Y6:

  • Motherboard Type: Mini-ITX
  • Body Material: Aluminum
  • Colors: Silver, white (pictured)
  • Expansion Slot: 2
  • Compatibility: VGA Card length: 300 mm; CPU cooler height: 60 mm
  • HDD bay: 3.5” HDD x2; 2.5” HDD x2
  • PSU Type: SFX
  • System Fan: 120mm x1
  • I/O Ports: None
  • Dimensions (W x H x D) 764 x 293 x 259 mm (30.08 x 11.54 x 10.20 inches)
  • Net Weight: 4.9 kg (10.8 lbs)

DSC_0308.jpg

This is obviously not going to appeal to everyone, but if you've followed Lian Li over the years they release these novel enclosures from time to time. It was very impressive looking in person and feels well constructed with Lian Li's usual high level of fit and finish.

CES 2016: Zotac ZBOX EA740 Features AMD Radeon R9 GPU

Subject: Systems | January 9, 2016 - 04:12 PM |
Tagged: zbox, small form factor, radeon, R9 M365X, i3-6100T Skylake, CES 2016, CES, amd

Zotac had several new ZBOX small form-factor PCs on display at CES, and among these was a new E series system featuring a pairing of an Intel Skylake i3 with an AMD Radeon R9 GPU.

DSC_0122.jpg

The Radeon in question is the R9 M365X, a discrete mobile part with 640 stream processors, up to 925 MHz core clock, and 2 GB of dedicated 128-bit GDDR5 memory running at up to 1125 MHz (72 GB/s max bandwidth). This is running on a very capable platform powered by a 6th-gen Intel Core i3-6100T, a 35W 2 core/4 thread part running at 3.20 GHz.

ZBOX-EA740-1.jpg

Here is a rundown of the specifications:

  • Processor: Intel Core i3-6100T (Skylake) dual-core, 3.20 GHz
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M365X with 2 GB GDDR5
  • Memory: 2x DDR3L-1600 SoDIMM slots
  • Storage: 2.5-inch SATA 6.0 Gbps; M.2 SSD slot
  • USB: 2x USB 3.0; USB 3.0 Type-C
  • Networking: 2x Gigabit LAN; 802.11ac Wi-Fi; Bluetooth 4.0
  • Display output: 3x DisplayPort

ZBOX-EA740-2.jpg

Good to see a discrete AMD GPU option in one of these small form-factor ZBOX units, as previous E-series models offered only NVIDIA or Intel solutions. Unfortunately no release date or price was announced.

CES 2016: Dell UltraSharp U3017Q 4K OLED Pro Display

Subject: Displays, Shows and Expos | January 9, 2016 - 07:59 AM |
Tagged: CES, CES 2016, dell, ultrasharp, oled

For the longest time, display technology was stagnant. Professional monitors were 1440p, IPS panels (or 2560x1600 for 16:10 models) and high-90% Adobe RGB color, which is useful for both video and print gamuts. Consumer monitors were based on TN technology that could maybe cover the smaller sRGB color space, which covers video. Mobile devices, due to their small size, relatively high viewing angle requirements, and eventually high PPI, started introducing higher-end technologies to consumers. G-Sync, and later FreeSync, continued to differentiate high-end panels. Still, apart from the shift to 4K 60Hz, professional panels didn't go through an astonishing upgrade.

OLED was always on the horizon though, and are now being integrated into consumer, and professional, monitors. The Dell UltraSharp U3017Q is one such display, with a 30-inch size and 4K resolution. It completely covers Adobe RGB and 97.8% of DCI-P3. DCI-P3 is not a superset of Adobe RGB, it's just a bit more shifted into the reds, and it is designed for digital cinema projects. Because it's not blocking white light, it can get deeper blacks and more saturated colors.

For accessories, it has a USB Type-C connector that can provide 100W of power, as well as high-speed data and apparently video.

Its pricing and availability is where we get to its downside. It will ship March 31st, which is great news for the new technology, but it will cost $4,999, which is not so amazing. That said, if companies get their hands on it, it might eventually trickle into the prosumer and consumer space, like the 4K IGZO panels did a couple of years ago.

What do our readers think?

Did it launch too early? Or does this make you interested when the price drops? Or, alternatively, are you planning on dropping a huge chunk of cash as soon as they'll take it?

CES 2016: Zotac Fanless C Series Mini-PC with Skylake i5

Subject: Systems | January 9, 2016 - 03:39 AM |
Tagged: zotac, Skylake, SFF, passive cooling, mini PC, Intel Core i5, fanless, CES 2016, CES

While there were both passive and actively-cooled systems on display in Zotac's suite at CES, one of the most interesting was a new fanless computer in a larger form-factor than previous C-series mini-PCs - and it's powered by an 6th-gen Intel Core i5 6300U processor.

DSC_0125.jpg

“The ZBOX C Series returns with an Intel Skylake CPU while delivering the same silent performance in an all new ZBOX size. More processing power, more entertainment and more productivity is contained within. The new C Series also support USB 3.1 Type-C, perfect for connecting to new gadgets and more bandwidth.”

Here are the specifications:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-6300U processor (dual-core up to 3.0 GHz)
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 520
  • Storage: 1x 2.5-inch SATA 6.0 Gbps bay
  • RAM: 2x DDR3L-1600 SoDIMM slots (up to 16GB supported)
  • USB: 2x USB 3.1 Type-C, 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0
  • Networking: Dual Gigabit LAN, 802.11ac wireless, Bluetooth 4.0
  • Video output: DisplayPort, HDMI

Previous 'nano' systems in the C-series have offered VESA mounting, and this new system is no exception. A completely fanless system, this unit was quite heavy in hand but should pose no issue for most larger displays.

CES 2016: In Win Displays Revised 805 Enclosure Concept

Subject: Cases and Cooling | January 9, 2016 - 12:15 AM |
Tagged: tempered glass, In Win 805, in win, enclosure, concept, CES 2016, CES, cases

In Win was showing a concept for a new version of their 805 chassis at their booth on the CES 2016 show floor, and this version adds a special front panel with an infinite LED effect from its dual-mirror construction.

DSC_0243.jpg

In addition to the cool front panel effect the 805 concept is compatible with RGB headers on certain motherboards (such as the ASUS ROG board used in the booth display), which control case lighting effects. The system on display was cycling color along with the ASUS ROG logo on the motherboard, and created a unique effect – especially given the front panel design, which really needs to be seen in person to maximize the effect.

DSC_0245.jpg

Internally we are looking at the same enclosure as the existing 805, a fantastic looking design with tempered glass side panels, and here are the specifications of that enclosure (which launched back in August of 2015):

  • Case Size: Mid Tower
  • Material: Aluminum and 3 mm tempered glass
  • Internal drive bays    3.5"/2.5" x2 + 2.5" x2 (up to 4 drives total)
  • Motherboard: ATX / Micro-ATX /Mini-ITX  (max 12” x 10.5”)
  • Expansion slots: 8
  • Power supply: ATX 12V, PSII Size and EPS up to 220mm
  • Front I/O: USB 3.1 TYPE-C x1, USB 3.0 x1, USB 2.0 x2, HD Audio
  • GPU support: Up to 320mm (164 mm height)
  • Cooling support:
  • CPU heatsink up to 156mm
  • Front 120/140mm Fan x2
  • Rear 120mm Fan x1 (Included)
  • Bottom 120mm Fan x2 (HDD cage removed)
  • Liquid cooling support:
  • Front: 120/140/240/280mm Radiator (Height up to 60mm)
  • Rear: 120mm Radiator (Height up to 35mm)
  • Dimension (HxWxD)    476 x 205 x 455 mm (18.7”x 8” x 18”)

DSC_0246.jpg

In Win is looking for feedback with this concept of a new 805 design, and the current 805 (minus the infinite LED front panel) is available for $169 (Newegg) here in the US.
