If you are running a server at home, for instance a PLEX server, which you access while travelling and need it to stay up 24/7 you may have looked into redundant PSUs.  They tend to be expensive and do not easily fit into a standard case, let alone a SFF one.  FSP Group has a solution they call The Twins.

Twins (0).jpg

The Twins are a pair of 500W PSUs in a casing that will fit in most cases, the width and height are the same as a normal ATX PSU, the length of 190mm might be an issue for some cases however.  They are fully hot-swappable and offer redundant power so that if one happens to go out your system will continue to run.

Twins (5).jpg

This 500W unit and the following 700W unit are both 80 PLUS GOLD certified and come with a USB header connection which allows you to use their FSP Guardian software.  FSP Guardian allows you to monitor real time power input, power output, efficiency, and other specs and saves the data for 30 days to let you see how your power systems are behaving.  The non-modular wiring provides you with a pair of 6+2 PCIe connectors and a half dozen SATA connectors in addition to the usual motherboard power connections.

Twins (3).jpg

You can check out the full PR below the specifications listed here.  Both models will come with a 5 year warranty and cost $399 and $499 respectively.

October 26, 2016 – Taipei, Taiwan – FSP, the performance power specialist, is pleased to announce a new 500W addition to its Twins series redundant Power Supplies, with a 700W version coming soon. Fitting most ATX tower chassis, these PSUs offer consumers a reliable solution for home mail, web, or email servers without needing to jump up to more costly form factors.

Redundant Modules for Reliable 24/7 Operation
The Twins series houses two independent power modules, each with its own power adapter. Under normal conditions, the two modules share the energy load to maximize efficiency and stability. If one module fails, however, the other automatically takes over as a clean fail safe. Being hot-swappable, a failed module can be replaced while the system is running without any downtime.

Compatible with Standard ATX Cases
Users can mount the Twins in standard ATX cases without the need for a special bracket. Both ATX 12V and EPS 12V connectors are provided for maximum motherboard compatibility. Flat ribbon cables save space and installation hassle, perfect for cramped cases.

80 Plus Gold Efficiency and Server-Grade Reliability
Both Twins PSUs are 80 Plus Gold certified, offering up to 90% efficiency. Under constant operation, this drastically cuts down operating costs. Each power supply module features a dedicated dual ball-bearing fan, premium capacitors, and has over current protection, short circuit protection, over voltage protection, and fan failure protection. Reliability is further backed by a MTBF of 100,000 hours and a 5 year warranty.

LED Alarm Guard and Digital Control Software
The LED alarm guard alerts operators to problems in the system and simplifies problem diagnosis. If a power supply fails, an alarm will sound and an LED indicator will show which power supply needs to be replaced. Users can connect the Twins’ to a USB header for FSP’s Guardian software: a full suite of digital monitoring controls. Keep an eye on input, output, efficiency, and other metrics in real time, or review up to seven days of past data.

Availability
The FSP Twins Series is now available in 500W/700W versions at a MSRP of $399/499 USD, respectively.

Tagged: supernova, evga, 80 Plus Gold, modular psu, SuperNOVA G3

Lee has reviewed more than a few EVGA SuperNOVA PSUs over the years and they tend to win the Gold as they are very well made.  The new G3 models are a bit smaller in volume than the previous G2 PSUs at 85mm high, 150mm wide and 150mm long, previously they tended to be 165mm long.  The new size will also mean the Hydraulic Dynamic Bearing fan size is reduced to 130mm, it will continue to support the EVGA ECO mode for those who desire quiet operation.  There is a seven year warranty on the 550W and 650W models, the higher powered are covered for a full decade.  We don't have a review up so keep an eye out for that, in the mean time have some PR.

FSP Group Inc. has been designing and building PC power supplies under their own brand since 2003. Not only do they market power supplies under their own FSP name but they are the OEM for many other big name brands. FSP’s Hydro G lineup is part of their top-tier Premium Series and currently includes three models: 850W, 750W, and 650W. Now you might be thinking “Hydro” refers to water-cooling but it does not – the Hydro G series power supplies all use conventional air cooling. The Hydro apparently refers to the Hydro Dynamic Bearing used in the cooling fan.

EVGA have updated their SuperNOVA family of PSUs with the G2L series, so named because of the glow emitted by the plugs for your cables.  Some may be disappointed they did not chose to utilize RGB lighting with several million colour possibilities, others will indeed prefer the simple white glow.

unnamed.jpg

The PSUs come with EVGA's 10 year warranty and ECO mode, Lee has this covered previously, which manages the noise levels produced by the fan and allowing that fan to remain unpowered until 20% load is reached.  This series will come with an 80 PLUS Gold rating, which EVGA does have a history of deserving when they display the rating.  Full PR is below the lens flare.

Corsair's SFX PSU, the SF600 600W

Subject: Cases and Cooling | July 12, 2016 - 04:00 PM |
Tagged: small form factor, SFX, SF600, SF Series, PSU, 80 Plus Gold

Lee reviewed the Corsair SF600 back in June but you might not have been shopping for a new PSU, especially a SFF one.  Take another look at the performance of this PSU over at [H]ard|OCP, which should be enough to power an RX480 or GTX1070 based system if you are eyeing a new system build.  They agreed with our results, giving out a Gold Award but also mentioning the SilverStone SX600-G, an older PSU with a smaller price tag and a feature or two that might interest you more than Corsair's new PSU.

"Corsair has gotten into making computers smaller lately with its Bulldog 4K Living Room Gaming System, and now it is going to share its SF600 power supply that follows the SFX standard form factor, which is tiny for a 600 watt PSU. Given its diminutive stature, has Corsair packed it to the gills with good power?"

FSP's new Hydro X series; technically the less expensive model?

Subject: Cases and Cooling | June 6, 2016 - 02:55 PM |
Tagged: fsp, PSU, Hydro X, 650W, 80 Plus Gold

With all the hoopla and brouhaha caused by Computex last week some smaller launches were missed, such as the FSP Hydro X 650W PSU.  This particular PSU is non-modular but does carry a five year warranty, an 80 Plus Gold rating and a single 12V rail capable of providing 649.92W @ 54.16A.  [H]ard|OCP's testing showed it to be a solid PSU, providing stable power and meeting with the claimed standards.  Unfortunately there is currently a bit of an issue, though FSP is working to resolve it.  This PSU sells for $95 but the previous fully modular model can be picked up for $85 or less, even though the MSRP is technically higher.  [H] reached out to FSP about this issue and you can see how they plan to resolve the issue in the full review.

1463006474rCJn1f6Y40_2_9_l.jpg

"FSP does not have much to say about its Hydro X in terms of marketing speak, but it does hit the high points that enthusiast system builders are looking for: "Silent operation, High efficiency ≧ 90%, Full Japan-made electrolytic capacitors, Powerful single +12V rail design, Ribbon cables, and Complete protection: OCP, OVP, SCP, OPP, OTP."

Take a chance on Rosewill's Valens-700?

Subject: Cases and Cooling | May 9, 2016 - 02:39 PM |
Tagged: rosewill, Valens-700, 700W, 80 Plus Gold

Saving a bit of money on your PSU can seem like a good idea but the importance of a solid PSU is often overlooked.  Rosewill has been around for quite a while but their PSU's do not tend to end up in a lot of high end rigs.  [H]ard|OCP took a look at their new Valens-700 which looks good on paper with a single 12V rail, 80 PLUS Gold certification and the hope that part of the savings is due to the non-modular design.  Unfortunately once it was strapped onto the test bed it failed many tests and did not receive a passing grade.  Check out the full review for the specifics and recommendations on better PSU at around this price point.

1461462306EwKfddgoQC_3_7_l.jpg

"While Rosewill is likely not a go-to computer power supply brand to most people, we have been surprised with Rosewill's quality on two of its PSUs over the last couple of years. Today we review an $80 700 watt Rosewill unit that is rated for Gold efficiency, and well ... that is about all that marketing has to say about its Valens-700."
