Super Talent posted up a YouTube video of their new USB 3.0 SSD. It hit some fairly high sequential throughput figures, pegging USB 2.0 at 43 MB/sec and breaking 300 MB/sec when used via USB 3.0.

Following just behind Corsair's announcement, OCZ Technology has announced that it's TRIM-supporting firmware for their own Summit series of SSDs is now available. Both the Corsair P-series and the OCZ Summit use the same Samsung controller, hence the convenient timing.

In what can only be described as "totally awesome treat for the holiday" if you have a Corsair P-series solid state drive, you can now get a TRIM-supporting firmware for that drive. If you are running Windows 7, or plan on upgrading to it, then you will definitely enjoy the performance advantages that this update will provide. Though we haven't tested TRIM on the Samsung-based drives yet, you can see how TRIM affected the Intel X25-M drives in our review here.

The USB 3.0 accessories keep getting announced and we couldn't be happier about it! We were the first to show you real-world performance benchmarks of USB 3.0 controllers on current motherboards using a prototype external USB 3.0 docking station but this new unit from LaCie will improve performance quite a bit by utilizing a RAID configuration.

Seagate originally intended to announce their new 7mm 2.5" laptop hard drives at CES, but opted to jump the gun on the announcement. The official release is below, but the gist of it is that Seagate are now producing thinner 2.5" laptop drives. This will enable netbook manufacturers to incorporate a thinner 2.5" drive into their form factors, potentially bringing costs down. The thought of having a decent capacity spinning disc in a netbook may be appealing, but performance will be considerably lower as compared to an (admittedly smaller) SSD solution.

We have the world's first SATA 6G (6.0 Gb/s) SSD in house in prototype form for benchmarking! Though our testing options were somewhat limited due to the prototype being a read-only piece of hardware, it has proven to us that SSDs are going to be separating themselves from standard hard drives even further in 2010.

I was recently briefed by the fine staff over at Western Digital about their new 'Advanced Format' partitioning scheme. This is a new format method they will be incorporating into their various drive lines. Advanced Format represents a new way for their drives to handle data internally. Instead of each individual sector having its own Sync/header and ECC, the new format will move to larger physical sectors, in this case 4k. Seagate announced their entrance to the SSD market with their new Pulsar drive. The details are very spotty, we do not know what controller they will be using nor what type of flash memory. We do know what size drives they use and AnandTech has a good guess as to how many channels the controller will have and that the useful lifetime of the drive should be 5 years.
